Free Agent updates involving Ilya Bryzgalov, Andrei Markov, Clark MacArthur, Andrew Ladd, Jaromir Jagr and Steven Stamkos

  • Nick Kypreos via twitter: Kypreos is hearing that the Flyers and Ilya Bryzgalov have the basis of an agreement done for a long term deal, but it may not be announced till after July 1st. Tagging rule would mean the Flyers would have to clear cap space if he were to sign before July 1st. Kypreos is hearing that Bryzgalov was looking for 7 year and $50 million ($7.14 million cap hit). Elliotte Friedman via twitter: Friedman has also heard the AAV will be around $7 million.
  • Montreal Gazette: Tony Marinaro of Team 990 reported that Andrei Markov and the Montreal Canadiens will soon sign a 2 year deal worth $11.5 million. After the report spread on twitter, Markov’s agent Don Meehan denied that a deal was imminent this week but that it could be done next week.
  • Lance Hornby of the Toronto Sun: It appears the Clarke MacArthur and the Maple Leafs will head to salary arbitration later this summer. GM Brian Burke in the past  that he won’t break the bank for players who have 1st line roles because the team lacks depth.
  • Ken Wiebe of the Winnipeg Sun: Winnipeg GM Kevin Cheveldayoff will sit down with Andrew Ladd’s reps this week to see if they can reach a long-term deal. Ladd is believed to be looking for a 4-5 year deal worth between $14 and $20 million.

“I’ve had some discussions with his agent, with respect to lots of different things, they represent a lot of different players in the draft,” said Cheveldayoff. “One thing we talked about is that between them trying to get their draft picks to different interviews and such, we’re going to carve out some time to have some good discussions. We’re going to find a way to spend some meaningful time together.”

  • Darren Dreger via twitter: Jagr playing with Datsyuk is interesting. Would the Red Wings pay $2-3 million for one year? There is lots of talk inside the Red Wings organization.
  • Damian Cristero of the St. Petersburgh Times: StevenStamkos on contract talks,
  • “I think it’s close,” he said of a new deal. “I don’t think it’s far off. As close as we are, it’s not something I’m really worried about.”

The deal could be worth about $7 million a season.

“Tampa is a great organization. With the success we had this year, there are only going to be bigger and better things. You want to be part of that. Whatever happens happens, but I have confidence things are going to get done well before (July 1).”

An offer sheet would cost a team 4 1st round draft picks. There have been rumors that negotiations have hit a “dead patch” and that the Leafs could put in an offer sheet as high as $9 million.

“You obviously want to get it done as quickly as possible,” Stamkos said, “and with all the questions being asked, it does creep into your head. But for the most part, I have the mentality that it’s going to get done and it will be great for both sides and I’ll be playing for Tampa Bay next year, where I want to be.”

Plenty of teams want to deal as NHL draft approaches … Doughty gets “major” offer … Bryzgalov deal could be done by Wednesday

Update 9:49 am: Brian Compton via twitter: Niklas Lidstrom has agreed to a 1 year contract with the Red Wings,

Update 9:25 am: Pierre LeBrun via twitter: The Red Wings have called an 11:00 am media conference call with Nicklas Lidstrom and Ken Holland.

  • Michael Russo of the Star Tribune: Russo lists some trade scuttlebutt. Colorado: Would trade the 11th overall, looking for a goaltender, maybe Jonathan Bernier or Cory Schneider. The Avs want to keep the 2nd overall pick. Columbus: Could trade the 8th overall pick for an impact center or puck moving defenseman. Have talked with Philadelphia and Edmonton. Detroit: Could be offering up Jiri Hudler and/or Valtteri Filppula for a puck moving defenseman. Edmonton: Would like to get another pick in the top 10. Possible players they are shopping are Ales Hemsky, Tom Gilbert, Sam Gagner and Andrew Cogliano. New Jersey: Looking for a puck moving defenseman, rumored to have talked to Wild about Brent Burns. Wouldn’t mind moving the big contract of Brian Rolston and Dainius Zubrus. Philadelphia: Need to trade at least $5 million to be able to sign Ilya Bryzgalov, would like to get a top 10 pick in the draft. Matt Carle, Scott Hartnell and Kris Versteeg are available. Phoenix: Looking for a young goalie. Tampa Bay: Shopping Ryan Malone.
  • Michael Russo of the Star Tribune: Wild GM Chuck Fletcher has said anyone is available except Mikko Koivu. Brent Burns might be being offered up for an impact forward. Fletcher has had preliminary talks with Burns’ agent. Burns will be a free agent after next year.

“Whether we make anything happen on the trade front, whether we add players or move up or down in the first round, you never know,” Fletcher said. “But I can guarantee you, whatever we do or don’t do, there will be an awful lot of conversations about an awful lot of things that may or may not make sense to us or the team we’re speaking with.

“Ninety percent of things discussed around the draft don’t happen, but there will be a lot of activity and we’ll be busy. What that means at end of day, we’ll find out.”

It’s likely the Wild will keep the 10th overall pick outright unless a “special scenario” presents itself. Niklas Backstrom, Martin Havlat, Marek Zidlicky and Matt Cullen have no-trade clauses. Teams might be interested in Pierre-Marc Bouchard, Nick Schultz and Greg Zanon. Cal Clutterbuck and AHL dman Marco Scandella may draw some interest, but the Wild may want to keep them. They’ve been trying to trade Cam Barker, but might end up buying him out. The Wild may be interested in moving up in the draft, but more likely, trading down to acquire another 1st or 2nd round pick.

  • Frank Seravalli of the Philadelphia Daily News: Ilya Bryzgalov said the ball is in the Flyers court now. “Tuesday or Wednesday everything will be [done]. We are waiting for [Philadelphia].” Though a deal could be completed soon, they won’t be able to announce it until cap room is cleared.
  • James Murphy via twitter: Tomas Kaberle would prefer to re-sign with the Bruins, and will be meeting with his agent and Peter Chiarelli in the next few days.
  • Rich Hammond of LA Kings Insider: The Kings may be looking to get back into the 1st round, but only if the deal makes sense. The Kings have made a “major” offer to Drew Doughty. Kings GM Dean Lombardi has made 2 trips in 4 weeks to Doughty’s agent (Don Meehan) office in Toronto. Lombardi would like to get a contract done before the draft, and isn’t overly concerned about an offer sheet. The Kings are still looking for a top-level forward through trade or free agency.
  • Damian Cristodero of the St. Petersburg Times: The Lightning may be looking to trade up from 27th overall at this Friday’s draft. Head scout Al Murray, “There are eight to 10 players who are sort of the consensus top guys. … That next group of probably 40 players is all over the place, depending on individual team needs and individual preferences.” Talks involving a new contract for Sean Bergenheim may not be going great, and he could become a free agent on July 1st. His agent Todd Diamond on if a deal could get done before July 1st, “It’s not going to be easy, but stranger things can happen.” Steve Yzerman wants to get a deal done with Steven Stamkos by July 1st so no team could set the parameters on a new deal.
  • Pierre LeBrun of ESPN: Tomas Vokoun’s agent, Michael C. Deutsch, “At this point it looks like he’ll hit the open market on July 1,” and “He’s keeping all his options open, including going back to Florida.” Panthers GM Dale Tallon didn’t rule out trying to re-sign Vokoun,

“We’ll see. It depends what happens between now and July 1. We’re not done yet,” Tallon told ESPN.com on Saturday. “There’s still lots of time. It’s hard to say what’s going to happen.”

It was reported a few days ago that Vokoun told a Czech newspaper that he might be interested in going to Colorado. His agent said those weren’t Vokoun’s quotes.

  • Wayne Scanlan of the Ottawa Citizen: Senators GM Bryan Murray said he’s spoken with Oilers GM Steve Tambellini about the 1st overall pick, but doubts the Oilers will move it. “I can imagine who they’d want from us,” Murray said, “our little right-shot defenceman I would think.” He was referring to Erik Karlsson, Murray said he’s not doing that.

Updates on Jagr, Kennedy, Stamkos, Ponikarovsky, and the Hurricanes

  • Pierre LeBrun via twitter: LeBrun spoke with Red Wings GM Ken Holland who confirmed he has spoken with Jaromir Jagr’s camp, only preliminary at this point. LeBrun spoke with Jagr who confirmed interest in coming back to NHL. Petr Svoboda, Jagr’s agent, confirms that they’ve spoken with the Red Wings and Canadiens.
  • Dave Molinari of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette: Penguins GM Ray Shero doesn’t have any deadline for re-signing winger Tyler Kennedy. He has no plans of trading his rights if nothing is finalized by July 1st. Re-signing Kennedy is still a priority for Shero despite not making much progress on a deal.
  • Eric Francis via twitter: Niklas Hagman and Ales Kotalik are buyout possibilities for the Flames, but most likely buried in the minors. No team would likely touch Matt Stajan if he was put on waivers.
  • Will DePaoli via twitter: The LA Kings remain ‘intrigued’ by Alexei Ponikarovsky, despite not having a good season.
  • Erik Erlendsson of the Tampa Tribune: Lightning GM Steve Yzerman is confident that they can re-sign Steven Stamkos.

“It is our intention to resign him, but he is restricted and we have the ability to match any potential offer sheet that might be put forward and we are in position to do that,” Yzerman said. “So, we are quite confident that Steven will be playing for the Lightning, and that’s our goal and we haven’t explored anything else and we don’t intend to look at it any other way.”

Discussions are being held with representatives from 3 of their free agents; Eric Brewer, Sean Bergenheim and Dwayne Roloson.

“I’ve been in contact with all their agents, in some cases we have exchanged numbers and, in a couple of other cases with our UFAs, we’ve said we are going to see where we are with a couple of players and then we’ll get back and let them know where we stand,” Yzerman said. “And that obviously has to take place in the next couple of weeks here.”

  • Chip Alexander of the Raleigh News & Observer: The Hurricanes re-signed defenseman Jay Harrison to a 2 year, $1.4 million deal. They are not close to re-signing UFAs Jussi Jokinen, Chad LaRose, and Joni Pitkanen.

“With Pitkanen, Jokinen and LaRose, we know what their position is,” Rutherford said, referring to their financial demands. “I’ve given our position. It does not appear we will be able to sign them.”

GM Jim Rutherford hasn’t had any substantive talks with Eric Cole, “We expected to hear something by now, but we have not,” Rutherford said.

“Things are not moving as we had hoped, and it’s getting closer to July 1,” Rutherford said Thursday. “We may have to look at other options. It may be easier to trade for players with existing contracts. Then we would know what we would be spending next year.

“I still prefer to sign some of our players. If not, we will look at a trade.

They will not look at trading their 12th overall pick at next weeks draft, nor any of their top prospects like Zac Dalpe, Zach Boychuk or Drayson Bowman. Rutherford will look to upgrade their top 4 defenseman. Kevin Bieksa and Christian Ehrhoff could be possibilities if they hit the open market.

Devils could file for arbitration with Parise … Lightning have 12 free agents … Ballard would be tough to move … Maloney not losing sleep over replacing Bryzgalov

  • Tom Gulitti of the Bergon Record: Devils winger Zach Parise said there is still “nothing” going on with contract discussions. Gulitti thinks it seems likely that the Devils will file for “team-elected arbitration” next week. This would prevent other teams from signing Parise to an offer sheet. When Lou was asked about it, “That’s something we’d never talk about.” Even if they file for arbitration, the sides can still work on a new deal.

“I’m sure that nobody wants that to happen,” Parise said. “No one wants it to drag out all the way to arbitration. I don’t think a player wants to go to arbitration. I don’t think an organization wants to take someone to arbitration at the end of the day. Maybe something like that happens, but of course we don’t want to.”

  • Kevin Paul Dupont of the Boston Globe: It looks like the Bruins could let Tomas Kaberle walk, and Michael Ryder could be kept. Both players are likely to get offers but at a discounted price. Kaberle is a $4.25 million cap hit, Ryder is at $4 million.
  • Damian Cristodero of the St. Petersburg Times: The Lightning have 12 free agents, and GM Steve Yzerman said that he probably can’t bring everyone back. He’s told a some players that there are a few contracts he has to do first before he can get to them. On UFA defenseman Eric Brewer,

“He played very well for us,” Yzerman said. “We intend to offer him a contract. It all comes down to how much we can afford to pay for the position and how much the player is asking. We haven’t had those discussions yet. But at my end-of-the-year meeting, he indicated he enjoyed playing here in Tampa and is interested in exploring signing an extension with us.”

Yzerman has been playing “phone tag” with Steven Stamkos’s agent,

“We want (Stamkos) to be a Lightning player for a long time and our intention is to reach an agreement that works for all the parties involved.”

The Lightning will likely want to sign Dwayne Roloson, Mike Smith, Sean Bergenheim and Teddy Purcell. Simon Gagne could be down the contract priority list.

  • Erik Erlendsson via twitter: If Brewer isn’t re-signed, Erlendsson thinks they will look at Kevin Bieksa or Christian Ehrhoff, “those type of UFAs”
  • Jim Matheson of the Edmonton Journal: Coyotes GM Don Maloney needs to find a number 1 center, but was pleased with Kyle Turris’s play against Detroit in the 1st round. Kris Draper may be finding himself on the outside, as there isn’t really room for him on the Red Wings roster next season. He may retire and take a management job similar to what Kirk Maltby did last year. Alex Radulov’s KHL team is in financial trouble which could bode well for the Predators.
  • Jim Matheson of the Edmonton Journal: Matheson wonders if it’s possible that Tim Thomas wins the Conn Smythe Trophy even if the Bruins lose. Keith Ballard’s days in Vancouver may be numbered as he’s fallen to 9th on their depth chart. Moving Ballard’s contract would be difficult as he has 3 years at $4.2 million per year. Coyotes GM Maloney hopes the Flyers work out a deal with Ilya Bryzgalov so that they can acquire another assets that was conditional in the trade. On a replacement for Bryzgalov,

“There’s some really good up-and-comers, ready for prime time as a No. 1 slot,” said Maloney. “For the right young goaltender who’s 23, 24, 25, who we could keep for five or six years, there’s a price. You weigh that against the UFA market. There’s some experienced, very good goaltenders. I’m not losing sleep over this.”

The Minnesota Wild may not name their new coach until draft week, Craig MacTavish may be the leading candidate. The Coyotes have to re-sign Keith Yandle but may let Ed Jovanovski walk. Matheson thinks the Oilers should sign Zenon Konopka.

Waddell not heading to Winnipeg with team … Re-alignment battle coming … Panthers to hire Dineen … Sens, Stars interviewing coaches

  • Jim Matheson of the Edmonton Journal: Atlanta Thrashers Winnipeg president Don Waddell will manage the team until the Board of Governors approves the sale on June 21st, he will not be heading north with the team. “When we hand our keys over to Winnipeg, I want to make sure it’s in the best condition possible,” said Waddell. Waddell was trying to get people together to keep the team in Atlanta, “We tried to marry up people, some willing to put up $5 million, $10 million, up to $20 million, I tried it with multiple groups, but we couldn’t make it work,” he said. “We couldn’t raise enough capital to buy it and to operate it.”
  • Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun: There will be a battle off-ice to see which team moves to the Eastern Conference after next season. The Red Wings, Blue Jackets and Predators all want to switch conferences. “This is going to be a huge fight,” said a league executive. The Wings have wanted to move for over a decade.

“The only problem for the Wings is they are a huge draw for a lot of the teams in the Western Conference,” said another NHL executive. “They’re not going to want to give up those dates when the Wings come to town.

“The Predators and Jackets don’t draw nearly as many fans for a lot of those teams as Detroit does. There’s going to be a lot of Western teams that won’t want to see Detroit moved to the East.”

  • Bruce Garrioch via twitter: The Ottawa Senators have started interviewing head coaches. Red Wings assistant Paul MacLean and Canadiens Kirk Muller have both held talks already. Sources are saying that MacLean was in Ottawa on Monday and Muller spoke with management in the last 48 hours. It’s beleived that Sens GM Bryan Murray will speak with 5 potential candidates. After the Calder Cup the Sens will interview Kurt Kleinendorst.
  • Damian Cristodero of the St. Petersburg Times: Steven Stamkos, his agent Mark Guy and Lightning GM Steve Yzerman don’t see any reason why a deal can’t get done.

“Both sides have a good relationship,” Guy said Monday. “Steven likes Tampa Bay, and he likes the environment. I don’t see any reason why once we get down to it, we won’t get something done.”

Stamkos is expected to sign for atleast $7 million a season.

  • Mike Heika of the Dallas Morning News: Stars GM Joe Nieuwendyk has interviewed 3 possible head coaches and plans for at least 1 more. He has talked to Glen Gulutzan (Texas AHL), Ken Hitchcock and Peter Horachek (Nashville assistant). Nieuwendyk also plans to talk to Kirk Muller and possibly someone else. They would like to have coach in place before the end of June.
  • Mike Heika of the Dallas Morning News: There could be some news regarding the sale of the Dallas Stars by the end of the week according to interim president Tony Tavares.

“There has been a lot of progress made in the past week, and we’re very confident about things moving forward,” Tavares said.

Vancouver businessman Tom Gaglardi is moving forward and received an extension on his exclusive 30-day negotiating window according to 2 sources. The process is complicated deal as it has to go through court proceedings and may not be official until July or August. Dallas businessmen Dough Miller and Billy Quinn are also interested in the team. Detroit businessman Christopher T. Charlton may also be interested.

Winnipeg press conference for 11 am Central, 12 pm Eastern … Lightning off-season notes … Panthers sign Skille

  • Jim Jamieson of the Vancouver Province: Christian Ehrhoff and Aaron Rome will be in the lineup for Game 1. Ehrhoff suffered what looked to be a shoulder injury in Game 3 against the Sharks. Rome was dazed in Game 3 after a hit from behind.
  • The Fourth Period: Steven Stamkos’s agent told The Fourth Period that he’ll be discussing a multi-year deal with the Lightning “in the near future.” They could work on a 5 year deal.
  • Dave Molinari of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette: The Penguins won’t be signing 2009 draft picks, center Andy Bathgate and Dman Viktor Ekbom. Bathgate was a 5th round pick and recorded 60 point in 64 games with Belleville of the OHL. He’s missed a lot of time with a shoulder injury the last 2 1/2 years. Ekbom was a 6th round pick, recording 8 assists in 96 games the last 2 seasons with Linkoping in Sweden’s Eletserien. Both will re-enter the draft.
  • Ken Warren of the Ottawa Citizen: The Senators signed prospects Jakub Silfverberg and Louie Caporusso to entry level deals yesterday. Silfverberg was a 2nd round pick in 2009, and Caporusso was playing at the University of Michigan.

Winger for Malkin? Crosby to be ready for camp … Less money for Doughty … A deal for Crawford at the Draft … Will Umberger want to return?

  • Rob Rossi of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review: The Penguins have 3 areas to address this off-season. 1. Hire a power play coach. 2. Find a winger for Evgeni Malkin. 3. Upgrade secondary skill. The Penguins have 17 players under contract for next year at just over $55.4 million. They’ll need to add 6 players for under $7 million.
  • Pierre LeBrun of ESPN: Shero on Crosby,

“He’s certainly going to be ready for camp,” Pens GM Ray Shero told ESPN.com Saturday. “He had really ramped it up before taking a week off. I know you don’t totally know with these things, but Dr. Collins has maintained the whole time that this is a manageable injury and that Sid will be fine. He’s got lots of time now.”

Chris Drury has a no movement clause so he won’t be sent to the minors which had been rumored last week.  What the Sabres could be looking for this off-season, “If we can add a little more offense, we need a bit more,” Regier said. “And maybe someone who can add a little experience on the back end because we’re a little young there.” Senators GM Bryan Murray will start their coaching search next week, he already has about 6 applicants.

  • Dan Arritt of ESPN Los Angeles: LA Kings defenseman Drew Doughty struggled this past season when comparing to his 2009-10 campaign, and it might hit him in the pocket book. “The drop-off could wind up costing Doughty some dough if he stays with the Kings. He’ll be a restricted free agent on July 1 and free to accept offer sheets from other teams, though the Kings have the right to match.” The Kings also have Alec Martinez, Trevor Lewis, Oscar Moller, Wayne Simmonds and Brad Richardson as RFA’s. It’s likely that Moller will be the only one not returning. The Kings will also likely to take a run at Brad Richards. There were interested in him at the deadline but the Stars where still in the playoff hunt.
  • Steve Simmons of the Toronto Sun: Simmons wonders is the Maple Leafs could sign one of Shea Weber, Steven Stamkos or Drew Doughty to an offer sheet, costing them 4 1st round picks. The Phoenix Coyotes lost $36.6 million this past season.
  • Eric Francis of the Calgary Sun: The Blackhawks and Corey Crawford will get a deal done at the draft. They are expected to offer deals in the 2,3, and 4 year range. There are rumors that the Canadiens could bury Scott Gomez and his $7.3 million cap hit in the minors next year.
  • Jim Matheson of the Edmonton Journal: Matheson wouldn’t be surprised if Alex Kovalev is in the KHL next year. Canadiens forward Lars Eller played Game 7 with a dislocated shoulder. Matheson doesn’t see the Bruins re-signing Tomas Kaberle unless he “gets his act in gear.”
  • Aaron Portzline of the Columbus Dispatch: RJ Umberger’s contract expires at the end of next season, and can start negotiating with the Blue Jackets after July 1st, but will he want to re-sign with the team. When asked about if he has concerns about the teams direction,

“That’s an important question for me to ask myself,” he said. “It’s something I need to consider. You only have so many years to play this game. I’m entering the stage of my career where these are the prime years. It’s important to me.

“I’d like to see how the summer plays out. From the end-of-the-year meetings (with Blue Jackets general manager Scott Howson and coach Scott Arniel), I know what they expect to do. They said they’re going to be active. But you want to see something done to feel better about the situation.”

Pronger and Carter done for series? Who’ll be in net for Flyers? Isles retain Nabokov’s rights … Laich to 1st line

  • Tim Panaccio of CSNPhilly: A source close to the Flyers said that Chris Pronger won’t be in the lineup for the rest of the series. Pronger is still experiencing pain in his fractured hand, and can’t really take contact to the area. Jeff Carter is also not expected back as he has a severely sprained MCL in his right knee, he’s been wearing a brace.
  • Sam Carchidi of the Philadelphia Inquirer: Flyers coach Peter Laviolette wouldn’t say after last night’s game who would be the starting goalie for Game 6 on Sunday. The Flyers have used 3 goalies so far as Michael Leighton replaced Brian Boucher in last night’s game. “I’m going to sleep on that one and probably give you nothing,” he said.
  • Katie Strang of Newsday: The NY Islanders have exercised the option of Evgeni Nabokov, and will retain his rights for next season.
  • Tom Jones of the St. Petersburgh Times: Some are questioning if Lightning forward Steven Stamkos is injured. When asked if he was Stamkos answered, “Everything feels good.” He only has 1 point this series, and has missed a couple ‘optional practices’ this week, something he rarely does.
  • Katie Carrera of the Washington Post: Brooks Laich will be on a line with Alex Ovechkin and Nicklas Backstrom for Game 5. Ovie will move to the right side. From coach Bruce Boudreau, “I like [Ovechkin on the right] for short periods of time because Alex is more used to playing left wing,” Boudreau said. “But Brooks is so responsible, you can play him anywhere and he’s going to make that line better. So I like that aspect of it. But right now, with Mike Knuble out, it makes for the better fit [to have Laich on the right]. Who knows, it might change.”

Bolland and Pronger doubtful for their Game 3′s … Bob or Boosh? Burke to put out an offer sheet? Options for Leafs

  • Katie Carrera of the Washington Post: Backstrom and Arnott trade places at yesterday’s practice. Capitals forward lines: Ovechkin-Arnott-Knuble, Sturm-Backstrom-Semin, Laich-Johansson-Chimera, Hendricks-Gordon-Bradley, King-Beagle-Fehr
  • Sam Carchidi of the Philadelphia Inquirer: A source close to the Flyers said before yesterday’s game there is a “50/50″ chance that Chris Pronger will be in the lineup Monday. After the game he said “He’s probably out Monday.” So it’s looking like a ‘must win’ would get Pronger back in the lineup. Who will be in net for the Flyers on Monday is the next big question. Laviolette pointed out that Bobrovsky has bounced back from tough games in the past. Arguments for both sides are,

For those in “Bob’s” corner:  Boucher seems better suited in a relief role than Bobrovsky because of his experience. In addition, Bobrovsky has been more effective on the road than Boucher.

  • Michael Russo of the Star-Tribune: From an interview with Wild owner Craig Leipold: On GM Chuck Fletcher, “He knows he has my complete and absolute confidence.” Fletcher has full control on hiring the next coach, and there is “no financial restraints when it comes to a coach.”
  • Sean Leahy via twitter: “SKA & KHL Pres Medvedev claims Hitchcock & MacTavish are 2 of 4 finalists for head coach.”
  • Steve Simmons of the Toronto Sun: “Brian Burke said an offer sheet for restricted free agents is not out of the question in the future.” Some RFA’s this year are, Steven Stamkos, Shea Weber, Zach Parise, Keith Yandle, Zach Bogosian. If Brad Richards doesn’t want to sign with the Leafs, would they look at the next best option, Brooks Laich of Washington? Another intriguing UFA is Ville Leino.
  • Mark Zwolinski of the Toronto Star: Zwolinski looks at some possible UFA centers the Maple Leafs could look at. Brad Richards: Will either re-sign with the Stars or sign with the Rangers. Simon Gagne: more of a LWer. Tim Connolly: could fill the hole for a year or two. Jason Arnott: same as Connolly. Michal Handzus: a long shot, but how much game does he have left. Zwolinski looks at some possible trade partners. New York Rangers: RFA’s Brandon Dubinsky, Brian Boyle. Rookie Derek Stepan and Erik Christensen has 1 year left before he’s a UFA. Ottawa Senators: Jason Spezza has 3 years left and could be moved to restock the roster. Boston Bruins: David Krejci has been rumored to Toronto. Would be costly to add him, makes $3.75 million next year. Philadelphia Flyers: Jeff Carter has been linked to the Leafs in the past, he and Mike Richards are locked up long term. The Flyers have less than $500,000 in cap space for next year. A long shot. San Jose Sharks: They have to interesting centers, Joe Pavelski ($4 million) and Devin Setoguchi ($1.8 million). Both are not likely to be moved, unless they disappoint in the playoffs again. Setoguchi is an RFA this summer, Pavelski has 2 years left. New Jersey Devils: Zach Parise is a RFA this summer, can the Devils afford him.

For those in Boosh’s corner: Boucher has been the steadier goalie this season, and his experience gives the team a calming effect.

Some RFA’s to keep an eye on … No Bryzgalov for Leafs … Capitals D update … Datysuk expects to play today

  • Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun: Garrioch thinks there are 3 restricted free agents to keep an eye on. Steven Stamkos: He probably would like one of those large 12 year, $120 million contracts, but the Lightning more interested in a 6 year, $8.5 million per season deal. Zach Parise: Parise could head to arbitration. He could sign a 1 year deal and become an unrestricted free agent next year. He could get a deal in the $5.5 million range. Shea Weber: The Predators aren’t big spenders, and Weber could be worth $6-6.5 million. Islanders coach Jack Capuano is likely to be named their full time coach. Ilya Bryzgalov and Tomas Vokoun are the top goalies on the market, look for the Avalanche to go after Vokoun. Garrioch thinks Ottawa’s Cory Clouston, Minnesota’s Todd Richards and Florida’s Peter DeBoer could all be looking for new work next year. Most managerial/coaching positions in Columbus may not be safe despite what their team president is saying.
  • Pierre LeBrun of ESPN: A source told LeBrun there is “no way” the Maple Leafs go after Ilya Bryzgalov this off-season. Goalie coach Francois Allaire and Bryzgalov don’t get along, and they also believe they have a starter in James Reimer. Their current plan is to see Jonas Gustavsson does in training camp. They could pick a goalie off waivers or bring back Giguere on a cheap one year deal. The Capitals hope to have Dennis Wideman back sometime during the playoffs. Mike Green feels he’s ready to go, and could play in a game or 2 before the playoffs. Tom Poti is skating, but they don’t know when he’ll return from the groin injury. It’s expected that Adam Foote could announce in the next 7-10  days that he’s retiring.  The Ducks have some goaltending issues to address this offseason. Ray Emery will be a UFA, they are concerned about Jonas Hiller’s vertigo issues (3 more year, $4.5 million cap hit), and they have Dan Ellis for 1 more year at $1.5 million.
  • John Vogl of the Buffalo News: Ryan Miller is still unable to practice and did not travel with the team to Washington. He is still bothered by an upper body injury caused by a Dian Phaneuf slap shot. Jordan Leopold has been unable to see a hand specialist for the last week as he’s had the flu and then pneumonia.
  • Eric Stephens of OC Register: Ducks defenseman Lubomir Visnovsky left the game with an upper body injury after being hit by Doug Murray of the Sharks. He was favoring his shoulder and will be re-evaluated today.
  • Vancouver Province: Canucks defenseman Alex Edler could return on Thursday against the Wild but Saturday against the Flames is more likely.

Richards not a lock for Rangers … Contract updates on Doughty, Stamkos and Weber … Keith’s injury

  • Larry Brooks of the NY Post: It’s not a guarantee that Brad Richards will sign with the NY Rangers in the off-season. The Rangers may not offer the term or dollar amount that the Kings, Leafs and maybe Stars could offer. Brooks expects Richards to get 7-8 year offers in the $7-7.5 million range, but the Rangers may only offer 5-6 years at $6-6.5 million.
  • Tim Sassone of the Daily Herald: There is still no update on the extent of Duncan Keith’s finger injury. The Fan 590 sites an ESPN sources that the finger is broken, but not known if he can play through it.
  • Eric Francis of the Calgary Sun: GM’s in Calgary, Vancouver and Toronto are not happy with the way trades are broken to players, many times the players find out before the team can contact them. “Trade protocol demands teams not inform players of trades until they’re rubber-stamped via a trade call originating from the league’s New York office. While the teams wait in line for the trade call, word invariably leaks out.” Burke wants to discuss at the GM meetings what can be done about this, Bill Daly adds, “Not sure anything can be done about it.” The LA Kings and Drew Doughty have had “no substantial discussions” according to Doughty’s agent Don Meehan. No talks are scheduled for the Lightning and Steven Stamkos but he’s still expected to sign a deal longer than 3 or 4 years according to his agent. Predators GM David Poile doesn’t think a deal with Shea Weber will get done before the end of the season.
  • Adrian Dater of the Denver Post: Avalanche forward Peter Mueller has been shut down for the year despite his concussion symptoms improving. Mueller was skating on his own, but never practiced with the team.
  • Pat Hickey of Habs Inside/Out: Jaroslav Spacek had surgery over the weekend on his knee, and he should be able to rejoin the lineup in 3-5 weeks.

Stamkos Hurt? Jackets need to make a move … Howard and Holmstrom injured … O’Reilly crashes heavily into boards … plus more rumors

  • Damian Cristodero of the St. Petersberg Times: Goalless in 6 games, and there are indications that Steven Stamkos is injured.

But then Boucher indicated Stamkos has been playing hurt.

“We never said it but he was injured,” Boucher said.

Well, that sparked all kinds of other questions.

    What is the injury?

“Some parts of the body injury,” Boucher said. “It’s a lot better but it was really annoying for a while.”

Did the injury coincide with his scoring drought?

    “Almost.”

    Stamkos added

“nothing major, nothing that’s going to keep me from playing a game. Honestly, it’s the bumps and bruises I go through every year.”

He also said he has been fighting “a little bit of the flu, lately.”

  • Michael Arace of the Columbus Dispatch: The Blue Jackets are in a 6-14-3 slide (heading into last night’s game) and need to make a trade to shake things up. They could use a centerman and a defenseman. Some of their veterans brought in to instill a winning attitude haven’t really lived up to the plan. Arace wonders if they’d overrated some of their younger players. They could trade Jake Voracek or Derick Brassard for a defenseman, and change the makeup of the team. Maybe trade a couple draft picks for one, like the Canadiens did in getting James Wisniewski, and where was Howson on that one? They could also move Sammy Pahlsson, Chris Clark, Fedor Tyutin, Jan Hejda and Mathieu Garon to a contender.
  • George Sipple of the Detroit Free Press: Jimmy Howard injured his knee in the first period last night. He was helped off the ice with about 7 minutes to go with a bruised knee. The Red Wings have also lost Tomas Holmstrom for likely 4 weeks with a fractured right hand. “Battling around the net,” he said. “Felt something. “Got to the bench and I felt like I can’t hold on to the stick anymore.” The Wings are already without Mike Modano, Pavel Datsyuk, Dan Cleary, Chris Osgood and Brad Stuart.
  • Adrian Dater of the Denver Post: Avalanche forward Cal O’Reilly crashed heavily into the boards (video below), was taken to hospital, but was later released. He was able to join the team on their charter home, the injury he sustained is not known yet.
  • Mike Heika of the Dallas Morning News: The Dallas Stars will likely look for a puck moving defenseman, “but it would have to be the perfect deal.but it would have to be the perfect deal.” If a new owner is not found by the trade deadline day, it would have to be a ‘cash for cash’ deal as there is no extra money.
  • Steve MacFarlane of the Calgary Sun: Flames GM Jay Feaster has been working the phones, “If for nothing else, I want to know what it is the teams are looking to do. Are there things that may make some sense for us? “You always want to make sure you’re gathering that information.” Feaster has 11 players with no-trade clauses and 11 with a cap of more than $3 million.

“Some guys will be honest with you up front and say, forget dollar for dollar, I have to win the battle of the dollars. I want to send more out than I’m taking back.

“That’s the tough thing. Guys want to match up term, too. It’s difficult when you have contracts with term and big dollars.

“I had to laugh, I had one guy say to me it has to be a fair deal skill for skill, but it has to be even money, too.”

No progress on Stamkos talks … Frolov done for the season … Commodore to AHL … Armstrong questionable for tonight

  • Erik Erlendsson of the Tampa Tribune: There has been no progress since the end of November on contract extension talks with Steven Stamkos and the Tampa Bay Lightning. GM Steve Yzerman has said they had sent Stamkos’s side an initial proposal, but haven’t heard back about it. “It’s our intention to get him signed,” Yzerman said. “In our initial meetings with Newport (Guy’s agency), they said Steven is very happy in Tampa and wants to stay here and get a deal done, so we’ll do everything we can.” Speculation is starting if deal could be for $7+ million a season.
  • Erik Duhatschek of the Globe and Mail: Colby Armstrong is still wearing a patch over his eye after taking a sucker punch from Ben Eager (received a 4 game suspension), Armstrong’s eye was scratched. There is a chance he’ll be ready to play tonight, he’ll be have more medical tests today. JS Giguere and Mike Brown practiced yesterday and both could be ready for Thursday versus the Coyotes.
  • Jesse Spector of the NY Daily News: The New York Rangers have lost Alexander Frolov for the remainder of the season after he tore his ACL and meniscus and sprained MCL, and will require surgery. Frolov got tangled up with Brad Winchester of the Blues. Kris Newbury was recalled by the team.
  • Tom Reed of the Columbus Dispatch: Mike Commodore has been assigned to Springfield of the AHL, if he plays for them or another AHL team is still in question. The Blue Jackets have recalled Grant Clitsome to take his roster spot.
  • Fluto Shinzawa of the Boston Globe: Bruins defenseman Mark Stuart has been put on the IR, and Matt Bartkowski was recalled. Adam McQuaid has a “unspecified injury or illness” and may not be able to go, Bartkowski could fill in.
  • Jeff Gordon of the St. Louis Post Dispatch: Cory Clouston could be the next coach to be fired and the Senators might be eying Dave Cameron (Canadian World Junior coach) as his placement. Senators GM Bryan Murray could also be on the hotseat with TSN analyst Pierre McGuire as a possible replacement. Blues defenseman Erik Johnson could use Jack Johnson’s 7 year, $30.5 million as motivation for his next contract. Robin Lehner could see some time in the Senators net as Brian Elliot struggles and Pascal Leclaire is still hurt.
  • Dave Molinari of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette: Mainly formed due to the illness of Malkin and Kennedy at practiced yesterday, Matt Cooke, Jordan Staal and Tyler Kennedy were back together, and could see game action together.

Sabres to get Connolly, Myers back … Rangers lose Christensen … Whitney in walking cast … Thrashers have offers for Bergfors

  • John Vogl of the Buffalo News: The Buffalo Sabres will get Tim Connolly back tomorrow night after missing 4 games with a fractured nose. Tyler Myers has missed the last couple games with an illness should be back as well. Patrick Kaleta suffered an upper body injury on Tuesday and is likely out tomorrow.
  • Joanne Ireland of the Edmonton Journal: Oilers defenseman Ryan Whitney is wearing a walking cast. When the swelling goes down he’ll be heading to see a specialist, which might not be for another couple of weeks. The best case scenario could see him only missing a month but it will likely be longer than that.
  • Katie Strang of Newsday: Kyle Okposo has been skating in full gear recently but won’t join the NY Islanders on their upcoming 11 day road trip.
  • Bob McKenzie via twitter: The Vancouver Canucks have put Ryan Parent on waivers. Boston’s Wyatt Smith cleared waivers.
  • Kevin Allen of the USA Today: The Atlanta Thrashers are looking to move Niclas Bergfors as coach Craig Ramsey doesn’t seem to think that Bergfors fits into the teams style of play. They have several offers for him and his $900,000 contract. Allen thinks they are probably trying to get a better pick or prospect, and might be looking to get a 2nd round pick or an advanced prospect for him. They aren’t looking for a roster player for him.
  • Stamkos was one of the Tampa players who complained about Linus Omark’s hot dogging spin-o-rama, but he pulled a nice one last night ….

No progress on Stamkos contract … Seguin to the World Juniors? Would Sharks trade for Beauchemin or Wisniewski?

  • Erik Erlendsson of the Tampa Tribune: There is no new progress to report on the Steven Stamkos contract extension. Yzerman was in Toronto but didn’t meet with Stamkos’s side. “I go back to what I said before, we have to make a deal that makes sense for everybody involved, and I can’t give a time frame on how long that will take,” Yzerman said.
  • EJ Hradek via twitter: Hradek doesn’t see the Penguins trading Evgeny Malkin, but it’s possible that they talk about it internally.
  • James Murphy of ESPN: A source inside the Boston Bruins has said they may consider allowing Tyler Seguin join Team Canada at the World Junior Championships. This move would give the Bruins some cap relief. With the glut of centers, they may leave Seguin on the wing for the remainder of the season. Marco Sturm should be back in a few weeks, with the Bruins needing to shed between $3.1 and $3.2 million. Jordan Caron has struggled of late and could find himself heading to the AHL. If Seguins was loaned to the Juniors, Caron sent to the AHL, and a Daniel Paille trade (being shopped by the team), would get them cost to the cap when Sturm returns.
  • Jimmy Murphy via twitter: Marco Sturm has a no trade clause and not a no movement clause, Murphy still doesn’t see the Bruins waiving him.
  • Andy Strickland of True Hockey: The Colorado Avalanche will move Tomas Fleischmann back to his natural left wing position, playing with either Paul Stastny or Matt Duchene.
  • Elliotte Friendman of CBC Sports: A few GM’s think Marco Sturm will be placed on waivers. If Brad Richards hits the open market in July, he’ll be looking for a team with stable ownership after being in Tampa and Dallas. Friedman wonders if San Jose would be interested in Francois Beauchemin. Another option for the Sharks could be James Wisniewski. Friedman thinks Daniel Alfredsson is injured more than he’s letting on.
  • Brian McNally via twitter: The Capitals had been talking with the Avalanche since August about bringing in Scott Hannan. The Caps had $3.8 million in cap room, they’ll now have $2.5 million in cap space for a deadline deal. Corey Masisak via twitter: Caps GM George McPhee says they would have cap space to add a $8 million player at the deadline, Masisak throws out Brad Richards name.
  • Pierre LeBrun of ESPN: LeBrun on Anaheim Ducks coach Randy Carlyle,

I believe Randy Carlyle is one of the best coaches in the league. But sometimes — and that time may be coming — you stay long enough in the same place and the players stop responding. It’s why great coaches like Scotty Bowman didn’t stay in the same place forever; the late Pat Burns coached four different teams to impressive levels of success. But like any coach, the players stop responding after a while. It may be that time has come in Anaheim.

  • Jason Brough of the Vancouver Province: Kevin Bieksa’s name continues to the center of trade rumors, but there is a chance he stays with the Canucks as there is a chance Sami Salo won’t be able to play this year.

“I think it’s hilarious. It’s funny how you guys keep throwing my name out there and I’m still standing here. I don’t think I can comment on every rumour that’s out there, but certainly with this one, I’m still here today and that’s all I can say. Rumours are out there and I’ve had my fair share. I’ve learned to deal with it and it doesn’t bother me.”

Sunday morning NHL Rumor Roundup with Hotstove and SourcesSay video

  • Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun: “The level of talk has heated up quite a bit,” said a league executive. “I get the sense some teams are getting antsy.” Brian Burke is the most active. The San Jose Sharks would like to add a veteran blueliner and might be willing to deal D Niclas Wallin and D Kent Huskins. Teams may be reluctant to give up 2nd round picks this year as it’s looking like a deep draft. The Canucks could be looking to move a Dman with soon, possibily Christian Ehrhoff or Kevin Bieksa. The Devils are also looking for defensive help, “They look to me like a team with a bad defence, an aging goalie and a superstar (Ilya Kovalchuk) that’s having a hard time fitting in. That can be a bad recipe,” said a league executive. If the Panthers fall out of the playoffs they could look to trade goalie Tomas Vokoun and winger Chris Higgins. The Sharks could be interested in Vokoun. The Panthers are also trying to move Rostislav Olesz and his 3 remaining years and $3.125 million cap hit.The Lightning are looking for blueline help. The Penguins are looking for a top 6 forward, Bill Guerin doesn’t seem like a possibility at this time.
  • Pierre LeBrun of ESPN: The Canucks have offered Christian Ehrhoff a contract, they counter offered, both sides are apart, and will table talks until later on in the season. Shea Weber’s side will talk with GM Poile this week when the Predators are in Toronto. Several teams have are talking to Miro Satan. Steve Yzerman has met with Steven Stamkos’s agent, they’ve begun contract extension talks, but it will take awhile. The Ottawa Senators and Chris Phillips’ side have had initial contract talks.
  • Steve Simmons of the Toronto Sun: 16 of the 20 Maple Leafs dressed last night were brought in by Brian Burke (Phaneuf and Armstrong not included). He’s done okay bringing in some better players like Kessel and Phaneuf, but the team still needs a Brian Skrudland/Doug Risebrough type center “who makes teams better without necessarily scoring goals.”
  • Hockey Night in Canada Hotstove with Ron MacLean, Eric Francis, Mike Milbury & Pierre LeBrun
