Alleged Abuse Comes Out in Fleury’s Book
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL News on October 10th, 2009
A longtime, bad NHL rumor is now out in the open. In Theo Fleury’s soon to be released book, “Playing With Fire,” he talks about being sexually abused by Graham James while he was in junior. Graham has already spent 3 1/2 years in prision for the abuse of Sheldon Kennedy.
Although Fleury has denied in the past about the abuse, many have thought his alcoholism and eratic behavior on and off the ice was attributed to James.
I find it amazing that Graham is coaching junior players in Europe. Did the team do any backchecks on this guy? Did they inform their players that their coach has served time in jail for abusing boys? He should be banned from coaching hockey.
I also hope that Fleury attempted hockey comeback wasn’t a marketing ploy to help sell his book. Many will probably think it was.
Theoren Fleury Announces Retirement
Posted by Derek in NHL Free Agents, NHL News on September 28th, 2009
“Theoren Fleury chose to end his NHL career in the place it began.
Instead of pursuing his NHL comeback with another club, the 41-year-old announced his retirement Monday in Calgary.
“I could not sign with another team,” he said during a news conference. “I get to retire a Calgary Flame.”(Source-TSN)
It’s a sad day for hockey fans in Calgary and around the NHL. As much as we were all pulling for the little guy, it seems that despite the good hands and point production Fleury displayed in 4 pre-season games his legs just couldn’t keep up to the fast pace of the new NHL.
It was a valiant effort none the less and Fleury deserves praise for containing his alcohol addiction and getting his life back on track. We would like to take this opportunity to congratulate Theo for his personal success and wish him all the best in his future endeavors.
Theo Fleury Released by the Flames
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL News on September 25th, 2009
Theo Fleury was released by the Calgary Flames friday morning. Fleury in attempting a comeback after 6 years out the NHL, recorded 4 points in 4 games and was a +4. He will hold a press conference on Monday to discuss his future. He did have this to say today …
“I am very thankful to Darryl and the Flames organization for following through on the commitment to provide me with this opportunity,” Fleury said in the joint statement. “I said in the beginning that no matter what the outcome, this would be a success story. I intend to take the next few days to review this experience and make decisions with my family regarding next steps in my life.” Fleury missed Thursday morning’s practice because of “maintenance,” according to the team.
I hope Theo decides to continue his comeback this year, even if he has to play in the minors for the first part of the season. I’m sure there would be some team that would give him a chance in the minors, I don’t see how it would hurt.
Theo Fleury Making a Statement
Posted by Derek in NHL Free Agents, NHL News on September 21st, 2009
Theo Fleury has walked on as a free agent to try-out with the Calgary Flames and it’s becoming one of the best feel-good stories of the NHL pre-season.
Anyone with a heart is pulling for the diminutive Fleury, who had battled substance abuse issues in the past. With the loyal Flames fans cheering his every move, he’s delivering with style. He scored a goal and added an assist on Sunday against the Florida Panthers, this after scoring the game winner in a shoot-out win over the Islanders last Thursday.
I admit that Calgary won’t have much trouble selling tickets this year with or without Fleury, but fans love to cheer for the underdog, a title and challenge Fleury has always embraced. You have to respect what he accomplished with 455 goals and 633 assists for 1088 points in 1084 career regular season games. He also had a point per game average in the playoffs with 34 goals and 45 assists for 79 points in 77 career playoff games.
This is a man with some real reasons to be motivated. He has stated that he is ashamed about how his career ended last time and is looking for redemption. As much as money is a strong motivator, pride has an element to it that can’t be measured or quantified. Likewise, respect also has an indelible quality that could infect the Flames dressing room and bring this team together. Hockey teams love to rally around a worthwhile cause, “us against the world”, if you will.
Furthermore, I believe that for players like Jarome Iginla, who seems like he’s been around forever but is only 32 years old, it would be inspirational to see that a man Fleury’s age can still play at a high level and he’s 41 years young.
