Bettman to meet with Edmonton’s Owner and Mayor … Smid and Whitney status unknown … Iginla ready … Greiss will start for Sharks

  • John MacKinnon of the Edmonton Journal: Gary Bettman has invited Oilers owner Daryl Katz and Edmonton’s Mayor Stephen Mandel to New York from some constructive dialogue on the arena project.

“I invited them in because I’m concerned that the framework for a deal hasn’t been agreed upon and isn’t there yet,” Bettman said in a telephone interview on Friday. “Since time is now of the essence, I want to see if I can be helpful in getting the parties to speak the same language.”

“I’m trying to help them be able to talk to each other and understand where they are, to see whether or not they’re capable of making a deal.

“I’m trying to be a facilitator.”

They’ve been negotiating for 3 years, and Katz’s Oct. 31st deadline is fast approaching.

  • JoAnne Ireland of the Edmonton Journal: Oilers defenseman Taylor Fedun was released from hospital and flew back to Edmonton 1 week after breaking his right femur. A decision on whether Ladislav Smid plays in tonight’s opener will be made today. Ryan Whitney’s status is also up in the air. He didn’t do any work on the power play at practice yesterday, which may mean he isn’t ready to go.
  • Mark Emmons of the San Jose Mercury News: Thomas Greiss will be in net for the Sharks opener tonight against the Coyotes.

“Antti is very close to being healthy enough,” McLellan said. “When you talk about health, you’re talking physically and mentally. There’s a recovery from injury and finding your game. Our schedule has been kind to us because we get a few days off again before we play next. We would rather target that than opening night.”

Their next game after the opener is next Friday.

  • David Alter via twitter: Maple Leafs forward Nazem Kadri “more than likely” will play a few games with the Marlies once he’s healthy according to Ron Wilson.

Wisniewski takes puck in face … Some guy named Kaberle, Leafs goalie issues … What the Blues could do … Kings in lead for Hemsky

  • Dave Stubbs of the Montreal Gazette: Canadiens defenseman James Wisniewski took a Taylor Hall shot just beneath his eye last night. He left a pool of blood on the ice and was taken to hospital. It’s unclear at the moment the extent of the injury. Nick Kypreos via twitter:  There is the fear that he suffered a broken cheekbone, interest in Eric Brewer may increase.
  • Rob Longley of the Toronto Star: There is talk that a Tomas Kaberle trade to the Bruins could happen today. Burke met with captain Dion Phaneuf and told him that they had not given up on the playoffs despite making the trades and rumors of more deals coming. But if by some chance they get into the playoffs, Burke told NHL Live, “We’re not just putting together a team that’s going to get thumped in the first round.” There are rumors that Blake Wheeler could be heading to the Leafs in a Kaberle deal, Burke said they are talking to multiple teams.
  • Shawn Starr (Team 990) via twitter: Quotes Bob McKenzie on Kaberle to Bruins, “If the deal gets done, it gets done today, if I were a betting men, the deal gets done today”
  • Katie Carerra of the Washington Post:  Mike Green missed his 3rd consecutive game with inner-ear trauma he suffered after taking a puck in the head on Feb. 6th. He underwent more tests yesterday which went well.
  • Katie Carerra of the Washington Post: The Capitals may biggest need may be a 2nd line center, but they also may look to add to their blueline. Tom Poti’s return is not known. Some possible blueline additions could be Chris Phillips, Tomas Kaberle, Ed Jovanovski, and Eric Brewer. GM George McPhee doesn’t intend to add a veteran goalie. Some forwards that could be available are Blake Wheeler, Ales Hemsky, Alex Kovalev, and Niclas Bergfors.
  • Kevin McGran of the Toronto Star: The Maple Leafs are running out of healthy goalies with JS Giguere possibly not able to backup James Reimer on Saturday due to his sore groin, 5th string Ben Scrivens may get the call up. It was a Boston radio station that suggested the Leafs were possibly getting Wheeler and pick for Kaberle. “But the rumour mill suggested Burke was more interested in Bruins rookie forward Jordan Caron, a 20-year-old first round pick (25th) from the 2009 draft.”
  • St. Louis Post-Dispatch: Jeremy Rutherford thinks Eric Brewer may be the only Blues piece that could net much of a return for the team. He’ll be a UFA at the end of the year, but if they have a desire to re-sign him, they likely wouldn’t trade him. Dan O’Neill thinks that Eric Brewer and Barret Jackman may get some interest, and under certain circumstances they may consider a Erik Johnson deal if the package is right. Brad Boyes might be in play. Jeff Gordon thinks trading a defenseman for a forward makes sense, but getting draft picks back doesn’t. They need to spend some money in this off-season. Andy Strickland (of True Hockey) thinks Brewer is 3rd on the list of available defenseman behind Kaberle and Philips. They may also look to move a player or 2 from their AHL team. The ownership situation doesn’t allow them to take on salary.
  • Dennis Bernstein via twitter: The LA Kings may be the leading team to acquire Ales Hemsky, but they are not the only team involved. Jim Matheson via twitter: Wonders if Wayne Simmonds and Colten Teubert would be enough of a return for Hemsky? Simmonds is a 3rd liner, and some scouts wonder about Teubert’s smarts.
  • Jim Matheson via twitter: Matheson thinks Dustin Penner would look good in the Canadiens lineup, their forward group is small. Defensive prospect Jarred Tinordi would be nice coming back.
  • David Pollak of the San Jose Mercury News: Antero Niittymaki’s return from his lower body injury is up in the air which may force GM Wilson to look for a backup goalie before the deadline. Thomas Greiss could be a possibility when his Swedish season ends in March.
  • Globe and Mail Audio:  Eric Duhatschek, James Mirtle, Sean Gordon and host Darren Yourk talk “Mario Lemieux’s scathing criticism of the NHL, Sunday’s Heritage Classic and who is buying and who is selling at the trade deadline.”

Stars looking for revenue sharing money? Does Winnipeg have the Corporate support? Doughty out a week … Greiss to Sweden

  • Mike Heika of the Dallas Morning Star: The Dallas Stars are looking for future revenue sharing money. The Hockey News reported earlier this week that they’ve already received $8 million, but other reports are that they are in process of finding out how they can get some extra money. The lenders who are in control of the team after the Hicks Sports Group defaulted on $525 million in loans, doesn’t want to put the team into “bankruptcy because of complications and the possible loss of control over the sale.” The Stars have asked the league for an advance on revenue sharing, which would come in a line of credit.
  • Paul Friesen of the Winnipeg Sun: Friesen looks at if Winnipeg has enough corporate support necessary for the survival of an NHL team.

The Sun contacted about one-third of the luxury suite holders at MTS Centre, and 17 of the 25 executives we reached said they would renew their suites at our predicted NHL price, which is triple the current rate.

Three more said they’d reduce their portion of their suites but stay involved, while three said they weren’t sure.

Just two of the 25 said the high price tag would force them out of the game.

They would expect the corporate suites to be about $180,000 a year. In comparison, the Oilers start around $150,000. Some people don’t think a Winnipeg NHL could survive long term, and the city may be better off without it, as people would spread their money around. Now, saying you would pay $180,000 is a lot different than when you have to actually pay $180,000. I’m still not sure the city can support a team to where it’s close to or is profitable.

  • Helene Elliott of the LA Times: Los Angeles Kings defenseman Drew Doughty will be out at least a week. The hit between Doughty and Erik Cole was deemed incidental by the league, and no punishment will be handed to Cole. “What they said is that [Cole] wasn’t necessarily trying to hit Doughty but they both turned,” Lombardi said. “Whether you agree with that or not, the logic, I get. It’s not inconsistent with the way the rule is designed.”
  • David Pollak of the San Jose Mercury News: San Jose Sharks goaltender Thomas Greiss was assigned to Brynas of the Swedish Elite League as Alex Stalock took control of the #1 spot in Worcester (AHL). Greiss has really fallen this year. Before they signed Antti Niemi he was to battle Antero Niittymaki for the #1 spot with the Sharks, he cleared waivers, and then can’t get win starting spot with their farm club.
  • Wayne Scanlan in the Ottawa Citizen: The Senators expect their veterans to come around, but they are playing close attention to their young guys, especially on the backend. Erik Karlsson is taking the brunt of criticism. Some are saying he’s not in as good of shape as he was last year. The loss of Filip Kuba (broken leg) has thrown  the defensive pairings out of whack, he is skating but not with teammates yet.

Jeff Finger waived … Tavares not flying with team … Several Players clear waivers … Maltby retiring

  • Michael Traikos via twitter: Jeff Fingers was placed on waivers today by the Toronto Maple Leafs and will be sent to the AHL Toronto Marlies when he clears waivers. Ron Wilson said “he’s not being buried.” TSN is reporting that Wilson has said that if someone gets hurt or struggles, Finger could get recalled.

Jeff Finger’s $3.5 million cap hit comes off the books for the time being. Brett Lebda appears healthy, and will take over the roll of 7th defenseman for the time being. The Leafs now have $4.8 million in cap space, $3.5 million from Finger, and $1.3 million from what they were under before.

  • Chris Botta via twitter: John Tavares didn’t fly out with the New York Islanders today. Tomorrow they play in Washington, Friday in Pittsburgh, so most likely Saturday at home is the earliest return.
  • Bob McKenzie via twitter: Clearing waivers today: Thomas Greiss (SJ), Jonathan Carlsson (Chi), Nolan Schaefer (Bos), and PL Letourneau-Leblond (NJ).
  • James Mirtle via twitter: Detroit Red Wings Kirk Maltby will be retiring from hockey rather than reporting to the AHL. At some point, he’ll most likely take a position within the organization. Bob McKenzie reporting an announcement is scheduled for 5:00 pm, and expects him to be named a pro scout.
  • Mike Heika and Scott Goldstein of the Dallas Morning News: Mike Ribeiro was arrested on Sunday on charges of public intoxication. Ribeiro said it was a personal issue and “It wasn’t a big thing, I wish there were cameras there and they could have seen what happened. … I just want to put that behind us today.”

Drury ready for Friday … Rangers interested in B. Richards? Tavares out still … Ducks not interested in Souray … plus more

  • Larry Brooks of the NY Post: Rangers center Chris Drury should be ready to go for Friday’s home opener against the Maple Leafs. Drury has been out since September 20th with a broken finger. Erik Christensen suffered a groin and hamstring injury last night, so a roster move may not necessary if Christensen is placed on IR. If he’s not placed on IR, one of either Todd White ($2.376 million) or Tim Kennedy ($550,000) could be sent to the AHL, as both cleared waivers last week. Brooks thinks the Rangers could be interested in Brad Richards at some point this season, and would be interested in signing him long-term. John Tortorella, “I don’t want to jump the gun, but Step reminds me of a young Brad Richards in Tampa,”
  • Jim Matheson of the Edmonton Journal: If injured Philadelphia Flyers forward Ian Laperriere is forced to retire due to his eye injury, his $1.16 million would still count against the cap for the next 2 years since he signed his contract after he was 35. I’m sure the Flyers would see if they could leave him LTIR for both seasons, therefore not counting against the cap, see Mike Rathje.
  • The NY York Times: New York Islanders forward John Tavares sat out last night’s game, and will miss their next one because of a concussion. Test came back normal yesterday, and he’ll trying skating today and tomorrow.
  • Bryan Mullen of the Tennessean: The Nashville Predators have recalled goalie Mark Dekanich as a precaution if Pekka Rinne his not able to go due a ‘lower-body-injury’. Rinne hasn’t practiced the last 2 days, but feels better, and is day-to-day.
  • Rich Chere of the Star-Ledger: The New Jersey Devils have put P.L. Letourneau-Leblond on waivers, and will be sent to the AHL if he clears. They are also expected to sign Adam Mair to a contract. Mair has been with the team on a tryout.
  • Eric Stephens of the OC Register: Newly acquired Andres Lilja is waiting a new work visa before he’s allowed to suit up for the Anaheim Ducks. They hope the he’ll receive it this week.

Scenarios for Souray … Teams calling about Greiss? Seguin back to center? Varlamov not a #1 lock?

  • Jim Matheson of the Edmonton Journal: The Oilers are not really interested in sending Sheldon Souray to their AHL club in Oklahoma City. GM Steve Tambellini said that waivers are an option, but would rather make a trade that would help the Oilers. If they don’t trade him by October 6th, they could put him on the roster, taking the $5.4 cap hit, but would have to drop a defenseman, one who may have to go through waivers. The AHL is an option but they don’t want to go there yet. The Islanders may not want to spend the money. The Avalanche may be looking at Jamie Langenbrunner to get over the cap floor. Columbus is the best bet.
  • Darren Dreger via twitter: Several teams have called the San Jose Sharks about their goaltending situation. They have 3 capable NHL goalies, with Thomas Greiss the likely target, possibly Minnesota as one of the teams.
  • Scott Cullen via twitter: Semyon Varlamov is not entrenched as the number 1 goalie in Washington, Michal Nuervith could be at one point.
  • James Murphy of ESPN Boston: Tyler Seguin has been playing on the wing along side Patrice Bergeron and Mark Recchi. Coach Claude Julien said on Monday that he likes the idea of having Seguin play center while Marc Savard is out. Blake Wheeler could also be an option at center. Zach Hamill, Joe Colborne and Jordan Caron are also getting a look at center.

“To be honest with you, I’d still like to see Tyler Seguin [at center] again, seeing now that he’s got a few games under his belt,” Julien said. “He handles it in the middle. I’d still like to see Blake Wheeler play center as well at some point and see if he can recapture his comfort zone that he had when he played that position when he was in school.”

  • Eric Stephens of the OC Register: Matt Beleskey will start the season on the top  line in Anaheim with Corey Perry and Ryan Getzlaf. Ducks defenseman Toni Lydman won’t be ready for the start of the season, and could be out for a lengthy period. Lydman experienced double vision a couple weeks ago, and the cause of the episode has yet to be found.
  • Jim Matheson of the Edmonton Journal: Jeff Deslauriers and Devan Dubnyk are battling each other to back up Nikolai Khabibulin in Edmonton. The Oilers haven’t hinted at who has the upper hand, but Dubnyk may get the nod as Deslauriers could draw more interest on the trade market. Deslauriers is on a 1 year deal at $1.05 million, Dubnyk signed a 2 year deal. GM Steve Tambellini wouldn’t say if he’s talked to Wild GM Chuck Fletcher or not, the Wild may prefer to get Deslauriers off waivers.
  • Brian Compton via twitter: With Kyle Okposo injury, Compton wonders if Nino Niederreiter will stick with the Islanders or be sent back to junior after 9 games, therefore not burning a year on his contract.
  • Andy Strickland of True Hockey: Manny Legace, who has been skating with the Islanders to stay in shape, is receiving some interest from the Minnesota Wild.

Kozlov to KHL … 3 NHL caliber goalies in SJ … Fehr wants $7.5 mill through 2012 … More on Staal, Savard and Maltby

  • Nick Kypreos via twitter: Fehr’s price tag for being the NHLPA executive director is $7.5 million through 2012, players start to “hmm and haw”.
  • David Pollak of the San Jose Mercury News: The Sharks now have 3 NHL caliber goalies after signing Antti Niemi. Antero Niittymaki (signed this off-season for $2 million a year, 2 years) and Thomas Greiss were expected to battle for the starting position before the Niemi signing. Niittymaki doesn’t feel that concerned, but Greiss was more disappointed, as he’s probably the #3 goalie now. Greiss has talked to GM Doug Wilson about the situation, which might involve a change of scenery.
  • Chris Kuc via twitter: Antti Niemi’s agent said that he had “four or five offers” before he decided to sign with the Sharks.
  • Steve Zipay of Newsday: Speculation, not a rumor. The Bruins could send Marc Savard to the Rangers for possibly Matt Gilroy, Sean Avery and a 2nd round pick.
  • George Sipple of the Detroit Free Press: Red Wings GM Ken Holland met with Kirk Maltby on Wednesday, and is waiting to hear back from him. Maltby would have to earn a spot on the roster, and it might take an injury or 2 to get a spot.
  • Terry Frei of the Denver Post: RFA Chris Stewart signed a 2 year contract worth $5.75 million, $2.5 million this year, $3.25 million next year. Peter Mueller still remains unsigned by the Avalanche. The Avs currently sit $950,000 below the cap floor.

Sharks interested in Niemi? Preds may not be talking to Theodore … Price-Canadiens talks are slow

  • Gary Peterson of the San Jose Mercury News: Could the San Jose Sharks be interested in Antti Niemi? The Sharks have about $4 million in cap space, with 2 goalies under contract. Are Antero Niittymaki (2 years and $4 million) and Thomas Greiss good enough to take the Sharks to the finals?
  • Jim Diamond of National Predators Examiner: As of Tuesday night, Predators GM David Poile said he’s fine with heading in to the season with Pekka Rinne and any one of his 4 goalie prospects who have never played an NHL game. Poile didn’t rule out looking for a more experienced goalie. Though the odds of signing him aren’t good, Poile said of Niemi, “We could call and see what he would be interested in, if there would be a fit.” Poile said (as of Tuesday night) that he has not talked to Jose Theodore. (It was rumored on Tuesday that they were talking, 1 year, $1.5 million.) The Preds still have RFA’s Patric Hornqvist and Cody Franson that they want to sign. Those negotiations are still a work in progress, Poile will talk to their agents late this week or early next week.
  • Dave Stubbs of Habs Inside/Out: Carey Price’s contact talks with the Canadiens are moving along at a slow pace, which is “relatively normal” according to his agent. The two sides are not close, but both sides are commited to getting a deal done. Price is looking for a short deal, a year or two.
  • Randy Youngan of the OC Register: Ducks GM Bob Murray has been rebuilding their defense. The team was 29th in blocked shots and shots allowed. Four starters will be Visnovsky, Lydman, Sutton and Sheldon Brookbank. Murray hinted there could be another veteran Dman on the way. They have been rumored to be interested in Kevin Bieksa, and former Duck, Ruslan Salei wants to return. Murray did say they have 2 spots open for the young players.
  • Joe Haggerty via twitter: Tim Thomas won’t get released by the Bruins, they’d like to trade him, might happen during the season.

Could Spezza end up in Edmonton? Volchenkov not going to Washington

  • Jim Matheson of the Edmonton Journal: Matheson wonders if Jason Spezza would be good fit for the Oilers, and if the same players they offered up for Dany Heatley could get it done? Spezza is due to make $35 million over the next 5 years, so his $7 million salary would basically be the same as Dustin Penner’s ($4.25 million), Ladislav Smid ($1.3 million) and Andrew Cogliano (RFA, $1.13 million last season). The Oilers would then have Spezza and Horcoff down the middle, and could draft Taylor Hall. With the Senators adding Smid, it could help off-set the loss of Anton Volchenkov if they can’t re-sign him.
  • Kevin Allen of the USA Today: Allen senses the Oilers would prefer a young center over a young winger, therefore maybe favoring Seguin over Hall. This would please the Bruins, but them may consider moving up to ensure they get Hall. Allen wonders if the Lightning would be interested in trading for Carey Price, with the Canadiens trading for a young goalie or drafting Calvin Pickard. Depending on how much Evgeni Nabokov wants (and Marty Turc), the Sharks could go with a Thomas Greiss and Turco combo in net. Allen thinks the Kings will go after Patrick Marleau, instead of Ilya Kovalchuk, mainly due to their familiarity for their San Jose days.
  • Michael Russo of the Minneapolis Star-Tribune: The Minnesota Wild’s management and coaching staff have already discussed free agency, and potential trade partner, but they’ll be meeting soon to discuss their own potential roster. Potential young guys that could move up, Nate Prosser, Marco Scandella, Tyler Cuma and Justin Falk. UFA that probably won’t be are Shane Hnidy and John Scott. The Wild are already at about $45.5 million for next year for 15 players, not including RFAs Guillaume Latendresse, Josh Harding and James Sheppard. Those 3 should be re-signed for somewhere inthe $5-6 million range, leaving $7-8 million to fill out the roster. Due to the weak free agent market and limited cap space, trades are more likely than free agent signings.
  • Tarik El-Bashir of the Washington Post: It has been rumored that the Washington Capitals were going to take a run at signing Anton Volchenkov in the $5 million per season range. A source close with the team told El-Bashir “are not going to make him an offer”.
  • Dave Molinari of Pittsburgh Post-Gazette: It had been rumored that the Penguins were hoping on signing Swedish defeseman Johan Fransson, but his rights are still owned by the LA Kings, and would have had to forfeit those rights by June 1st. It’s also reported that he signed a 2-year deal with Dynamo Minsk of the KHL.

Wings won’t do anything until Lidstrom decides what he’s doing … Horton trade bait … What will the Canadiens do now?

  • George Malik of MLive: Red Wings GM Ken Holland told MLive that they can’t re-sign Tomas Holmstrom, Todd Bertuzzi, or any of their 5 RFAs before they hear if Nicklas Lidstrom will be back next season or not. Lidstrom has told the them he’ll let them know in a couple weeks. It doesn’t look like Brett Lebda, Jason Williams, and Doug Janik will be back. Derek Meech should get a qualifying offer from them.
  • Fluto Shinzawa of the Boston Globe: Panthers GM Dale Tallon isn’t a fan of players who aren’t willing to pay the price, which means that Nathan Horton could be on his way out, as he known to not have a good work ethic. A Bruin, who has friends on the Panthers has been told that Norton has “No heartbeat”. “We weeded out people who didn’t want to pay the price,” Tallon said. “If you don’t want to pay the price and you don’t want to be involved here, you’re not going to be here.”  The Bruins have limited funds available to sign free agents, but could target Flyers winger, Aaron Asham.
  • Lyle Richardson of Fox Sports: The Montreal Canadiens currently have 14 players locked up for about $45.7 million. Tomas Plekanec is a UFA and it might take around $5 million to re-sign him. Their biggest off-season situation is obviously what to do with Jaroslav Halak and Carey Price. Halak has shown that he can the #1, but Price could be the future star. RFAs Maxim Lapierre, Tom Pyatt, and Benoit Pouliot should be back. Glen Metropolit, Marc-Andre Bergeron, and Paul Mara probably won’t be back. Halak playoff performance may get himself a contract offer from the Canadiens, maybe in the $3 million range. To clear up some salary space, they may try to get rid of Andrei Kostitsyn (1 year, $3.25 million) and Roman Hamrlik (1 year, $5.5 million), but that could be difficult. One option would be for the Canadiens to package one of them with Carey Price. Buying George Laraque out will free up $1 million. Andrei Markov will be a free agent after next year, and could be shopped around if they think he’ll be out of their price range ($7 million?) or not in their long term plans.
  • Mark Purdy of the San Jose Mercury News: It is possible that the Sharks could re-sign both Patrick Marleau and Evgeni Nabokov, but odds are they will only go after 1. Joe Pavelski and Devin Setoguchi will be getting pay increases, and cap space will be disappearing. If they let Nabokov go, they could go with Thomas Greiss and minor leaguer Alex Stalock, or look to bring in a less expensive goalie to challenge for the #1 spot.
  • Chip Alexander of the Raleigh News & Observer: Carolina Hurricanes majority owner Peter Karmanos Jr. has hired a New York investment firm to help him find a local buyer for a 49% stake in the team. Karmanos former co-owner, Thomas Thewes, passed away a few years ago, he owned the 49% of the team.
