Oilers Want Leafs Pick … Would Calgary trade Jarome? More on Philly’s Goaltending Options … Caps Wanted Kaberle?

  • Kevin Paul Dupont of the Boston Globe: The Edmonton Oilers reportedly offered the Boston Bruins, Dustin Penner and Tom Gilbert for the 1st round pick that belonged to the Maple Leafs. The Oilers may try again at Draft time with Ales Hemsky, Sam Gagner or Andrew Cogliano.
  • Allan Maki of the Globe and Mail: Would the Calgary Flames consider asking Jarome Iginla to waive his no-trade clause? Iginla is 33, and Power Forward bodies begin to breakdown faster. Iginla is still effective, but how long can he keep his robust style up. He could fetch a good return, but he is the face of the Flames. “Iginla could end up being the Flames’ Mats Sundin,” an NHL source said. “He wants to stay. He wants to be part of the solution. But what if he has to be traded to make the team better? That’s the question Calgary is left with.”
  • Chuck Gormley of the Courier Post: What would it take for the Flyers to trade for Carey Price? If the price for Price isn’t too high, could make sense. They can also look to the free agent route; Marty Turco, Evgeni Nabokov, Jose Theodore, Vesa Toskala, and Chris Mason. They could also look at re-signing Michael Leighton. 28 year old Johan Backlund (21-17-2) was played well for Adirondack but would have to be re-signed. Finnish free agent Jussi Rynnas may also be worth the risk if the price is right.
  • Aaron Portzline of the Columbus Dispatch: Nikita Filatov’s KHL season is over, and it doesn’t look like he’ll be heading back to Columbus to finish their season. There is a chance his days in Columbus are over for good. Unhappy with being a healthy scratch for 6 games, and seeing limited action in 13 games at the beginning of the season, Filatov basically walked out on the team. Some feel he would have a negative impact in the dressing room if they brought him back this year or next. Portzline thinks the Blue Jackets will trade him at the draft for a proven, reliable player.
  • Paul Hunter of the Toronto Star: It was rumored at the NHL trade deadline that Washington offered Tomas Fleischmann, Karl Alzner and a pick for Tomas Kaberle.

    LeBrun and Garrioch Sunday Rumors …

  • Pierre LeBrun of ESPN:
    • The Blackhawks have looked for available goalies around the league, but feel that it wouldn’t be an upgrade. They also don’t have a lot of cap room for this year, after the acquistion of Kim Johnsson.
    • The Islanders are shopping Martin Biron, Dwayne Roloson and Andy Sutton. Roloson is 40 years old and will make $3 milllion next season ($2.5 million cap hit).
    • Predators GM, David Poile, will meet with all his UFA’s during the Olympic break. If they are unable to re-sign Dan Hamhuis, they might look at trading him, despite being in a potential playoff spot.
    • Dennis Seidenberg and Jordan Leopold are as good as gone from the Florida Panthers.
  • Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun:
    • The Capitals may be considering adding a goalie. GM McPhee has looked around, but their options may be limited as some teams aren’t in the selling mood. Marty Turco, Martin Biron and Jaroslav Halak could be options.
    • The Rangers could be looking to do something, with Brandon Dubinsky’s name in the middle of it.
    • The Bruins wouldn’t ask Tim Thomas to waive his no-movement clause until he has something in place. They’ve talked to 3 teams about Thomas.
    • The Blue Jackets are shopping Raffi Torres, Jan Hejda and Milan Jurcina.
    • Florida may be shopping Tomas Vokoun and his no-trade clause. Would he waive it to go to Philly?
    • Florida could move Stephen Weiss to the Maple Leafs.
    • Ray Whitney demanded a 2 year, $7 million contract extension from the LA Kings.
    • The Oilers are trying to move Shawn Horcoff, Robert Nilsson, Sheldon Souray, Steve Staios, and Tom Gilbert.
  • Rob Rossi of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review: The Penguins are within $700,000 of the salary cap, therefore may not have the room to do much at the trade deadline. One option could be to trade Alex Goligoski and his $1.83 million cap hit (2 more seasons after this year). Many don’t think they Penguins will sacrifice the future this year.
  • Hockey Night in Canada Hotstove Video: Panel talking about the Olympic hockey tournament, and a few rumors.

    Around the Boards: Thurs. Oct. 29th

    • From the RDS, through translation: Ilya Kovalchuk could be close to signing a 9 year deal with the Thrashers for more than $100 million, averaging $11.3 million per season. We’ll write a separate blog to comment on this.
    • James Murphy of NESN: If the Thrashers are unable to sign Kovalchuk, the Bruins might be a fit. The trading of Kobasew and the with Lucic and Savard on the IR, it has saved the club some much valued cap space. They also have lot of draft picks to dangle.
    • Elliotte Friedman of CBCSports.ca: Has Jaroslav Halak taken over the goalie of the future for the Canadiens? Are the Canadiens playing Halak more lately in an attempt to motivate Price.
    • A quote mentioned in the Friedman’s blog (link above) … Ilya Bryzgalov on being named NHL first star of the week. “I don’t care,” according to the Arizona Republic. “I don’t like to run in front of the train because the train at some point can run over you.”
    • Jason Hendricks of HendricksHockey.com: From one the Hockey Insiders sources, the Canadiens and Oilers could be looking a trade. The Oilers like Tomas Plekanec, Andrei Kostitsyn, and Kyle Chipchura. The Canadiens like Tom Gilbert, Denis Grebeshkov, & J.F. Jacques.
    • Damien Cox of the Toronto Star: There is a chance the Maple Leafs may look to trade Tomas Kaberle again. Dallas and Boston will be mentioned again as possible destinations.
    • Wayne Fish of the Bucks County Courier Times (via Phillyburbs): Surgery was recommended for Simon Gagne’s 2 sports hernias, so he’s seeking a second opinion, though it sounds like surgery is the only option to fix the problem.
    • Tampa Bay Tribune: A potential buyer for the Tampa Bay Lightning, Jeff Greene, is no longer interested in buying the club. So this leaves 2 Florida franchises that are having trouble finding an owner.
