Fleischmann to Cancucks? Kings? Would the Pens trade Malkin? Would the Devils trade Brodeur? Perron close to be symptom free
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL Injuries, NHL News, NHL Rumors on November 29th, 2010
- Ben Kuzma of the Vancouver Province: Rumors are heating up that the Washington Capitals are looking to move Tomas Fleischmann for a defenseman. Fleischmann has 4 goals in 22 games, was a healthy scratch mid November against the Sabres, and is a UFA at seasons end. The Capitals were interested in Kevin Bieksa in the off-season. There was a late night rumor last night that Fleischmann could be heading to the LA Kings.
- Jeremy Rutherford of the St. Louis Dispatch: David Perron has missed his 12th straight game will post-concussion symptoms. He’s now able to at least play video games, before he was only able to rest. Perron was hit [24] days ago by Joe Thornton (I guess those people calling him a faker were completely wrong, and no I’m not referring to Gary Bettman), and feels he’s getting ‘close’ to being symptom free. Perron said this about Thornton, “Obviously he’s not trying to hurt me there. He doesn’t know it’s going to go on this long and I’m going to miss this many games, so obviously he wouldn’t do that.”
- Chris Zupke of the OC Register: Teemu Selanne said he’ll be ready to return to the Ducks lineup tonight. Lubomir Visnovsky will see today how his back is feeling before declaring if he will/won’t play tonight. Joffery Lupul could rejoin the team today after playing a few games with Syracuse of the AHL.
- Ben Kuzma of the Vancouver Province: Sami Salo continues to rehab from his ruptured Achilles, with reports of him beginning skating in 3 weeks, with a possible January return. No timetable has been set.
- Jim Matheson of the Edmonton Journal: Avalanche defenseman Kyle Cumiskey could be trade bait, they are looking to add some grit and leadership. Evgeni Malkin is having another ‘average’ season, and the Penguins might consider dealing him for a heavy ransom, and go with Jordan Staal as their #2 center. The Oilers may have an interest in Dallas Stars Dman Mark Fistric. The Stars may not be interested in giving Brad Richards a deal in the 6-8 year range as they may be worried about his foot speed as he gets older. The Stars may prefer a 3 year deal. The Kings will be interested if the Stars are thinking of dealing him.
- Larry Brooks of the NY Post: Brooks wonders if the Devils would consider trading Martin Brodeur. Lou would likely never approach Brodeur about this, Brodeur would have to bring it up with Lou. The Capitals would have to be interested if he were to become available. The Capitals could send a young goaltenders, “John Carlson or Karl Alzner — Mike Green? as well as young center.
- Lance Hornby of the Toronto Sun: Ron Wilson continues to juggle his lines looking for some sort of offense. Tyler Bozak who was/is the teams number 1 center was dropped to the 3rd and 4th lines in Saturday’s loss to the Senators. The Leafs are on a 0-7-1 road streak and having only scored 16 goals on the road in 10 games.
- Steve Simmons of the Toronto Sun: The Maple Leafs aren’t considering sending Tyler Bozak to the Marlies, but Simmons thinks they should reconsider as he’s “He is 316th in the NHL in scoring, 394th in scoring at even strength, 153rd in power-play points. He is on pace for a terrible 23-point season.” Simmons wonders what the trade value for Mikhail Grabovski would be if Burke through his name out there, his value may not get higher than it is now.

The Eric Belanger – Washington Capitals Saga begins
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL News on September 16th, 2010
Eric Belanger signed with the Phoenix Coyotes on Tuesday, a 1 year deal worth $750,000. It has been out there that he had a verbal agreement with the Washington Capitals for well over a month on a 1 year deal worth $1.85 million. The deal was apparently contingent on the Capitals clearing a bit of cap space, rumored to be a Tomas Fleischmann trade, which never materialized. Belanger’s agent, has now made statements bad mouthing the Capitals and how they handled the situation.
- Katie Carrera of the Washington Post: The Capitals have never said they had an agreement with Belanger, GM George McPhee wouldn’t comment, a team spokesman said they team never had a contract agreement with Belanger. Joe Tacopina, Belanger’s agent has said that they did have an agreement, the team helped Belanger get a lease on a house and helped enroll his kids in a Washington school.
“It’s just disingenuous,” Tacopina said. “Despite a two-way commitment and requesting Eric to commit to them and take himself out of the [free agent] mix, when they wound up not being able to make the trade several weeks later, they decided they couldn’t sign him.”
- James Mirtle of the Globe and Mail: Belanger’s agent, Joe Tacopina is threatening legal action against the Capitals for backing out of Belanger’s contract offer. Apparently a deal was made over the phone on July 16th, but wouldn’t be official until a trade was made. In mid-August, the Capitals assistant GM informed Tacopina that the deal may not happen, after they helped him move to Washington and enroll his kids in a school. An agent has said the Belanger’s agent mishandled the situation.
“They don’t have a legal leg to stand on,” one agent said Wednesday. “The entire situation is governed by the CBA. An agent and the player are obligated under the CBA to not take individual legal action or you can lose your certification to be an agent … The sole remedy would be a grievance.
“The grievance precedent is 100-per-cent crystal clear: Unless you have a signed standard player contract on file, registered with the NHL, you have nothing.”
In Mirtle’s article, there is a copy of an email that Tacopina sent to Caps GM George McPhee on August 28th.
- Jeff Marek via twitter: Capitals owner, Ted Leonisis, says that Vogul’s article (below) shows their side of things.
- Ben Wright via twitter: Wright responds to Marek saying it’s interesting how they didn’t put it on their (Capitals) website, but had a team employee write it.
- Mike Vogul of Dump ‘n chase: Vogul provides a view from the Capitals side of things. Discussions began to place between Belanger’s agents and the Caps assistant GM, Don Fishman, back in June. Belanger wanted a 3-4 year deal, Capitals countered with 2 years and $3 million. The Caps were informed that Belanger rejected the deal, he was looking for a big contract, and wouldn’t take less than $2 million. Vogul points out that Belanger is Tacopina and his firm MASE only NHL client. Tacopina told the Caps(in July) that Belanger would do a 1 year deal, throwing out the $1.85 million number. The Caps said they could do that, but would need to move out some salary before it work for them. This was before Fleischmann’s arbitration hearing and they didn’t want to commit to a salary before taking one off. They were also interested in bringing Willie Mitchell, who ultimately signed on Aug. 25th with the Kings. Mid-August the Capitals told the Belanger side that all was quiet on the trade front and if they had something else with another club, they shouldn’t wait for the Caps. They told the Capitals they would wait, and leaked the Capitals deal to the Canadian media. McPhee personally called Belanger in the last 2 weeks saying they couldn’t move forward with the deal, but offered a tryout while he waited for an offer from another club. Belanger signed with Coyotes instead. Belanger and Tacopina chose to risk waiting for Capitals to make a trade, instead of signing elsewhere.
RFAs still looking to finalize contracts … Regehr admits he’s been shopped … Some UFAs hope to get deals soon
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL News on September 9th, 2010
- Mike Heika of the Dallas Morning News: The Dallas Stars had talks with the agents for James Neal and Matt Niskanen on Tuesday. The team hopes to have them signed before the start of camp.
- Craig Custance of the Sporting News: Washington Capitals coach Bruce Boudreau expects Tomas Fleischmann to have a breakout season with the team. “Oh yeah. Those trade rumors, I think you can faithfully put all of them to bed,” Boudreau told Sporting News. “We laugh at so many of them that have no substance. I don’t know who makes them up. Some people have very vivid imaginations.”
- Jesse Spector of the NY Daily News: There has been lots of ‘chatter’ between the Rangers and Marc Staal side, but there’s no word on a forthcoming deal.
- Helene Elliott via twitter: No deal between the Anaheim Ducks and Bobby Ryan yet, continuing to talk.
- Eric Francis of the Calgary Sun: Calgary Flames defenseman Robyn Regehr has been linked to trade rumors this summer, and didn’t deny it. “Have I been approached about (a trade)?” repeated Regehr yesterday during a suddenly awkward exchange. “Ahhhhh, I can’t really … I’m not going to get into that. “It’s part of sports. That’s the way it is.” The Flames are over the salary cap, and Regehr’s $4 million salary (3 more years) could be one salary they might move out.
- Tom Gulitti of the Bergon Record: Mike Mottau’s agent thinks the UFA will have a contract by the start of training camp. They don’t have any offers they are considering, but have been in touch with teams over the summer. It’s still possible that Mottau could return to the Devils, once they clear out a bunch of cap space. Jay Pandolfo is still looking for a contract, and has talked to a few teams according to his agent.
- Fan 590 Audio: Brian Burke talks with Bob McCown on Prime Time Sports about the Kovalchuk contract and the Michael Liambas rookie camp invite.
- Stephen Harris of the Boston Herald: The Boston Bruins have an agreement with JYP Jyvaskyla of the Finnish Elite League, in which the teams an loan players to each other. Will the Bruins bury a contact in Europe to reduce their cap number?
- Andy Strickland via twitter: Bill Guerin is still skating with some Flyers, and is still hopeful something can be worked out with the team.
- Tom Gulitti via twitter: Marcus Nilson has reportedly been invited to the New Jersey Devils training camp.
- Helene St. James of the Detroit Free Press: The Detroit Red Wings have placed defenseman Derek Meech on waivers. The 26-year old Meech has played 126 games in the last 4 years.
- Sherri Zickefoose of the Calgary Herald: Former NHLer Jason Smith has been arrested for domestic assault. Smith is being charged with two counts of assault and one count of unlawful confinement against his wife and teenaged daughter.
Nothing new on Kovalchuk talks … Semin okay after car accident … Caps talking to Vancouver and Edmonton
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL Free Agents, NHL Rumors on August 20th, 2010
- Tom Gulitti via twitter: New Jersey Devils GM Lou Lamoriello says “everything is status quo” on Kovalchuk talks. Then asked if still trying to sign him “Yes. I said I’m not going to comment until everything has come to a conclusion.”
- Dmitry Chesnokov via twitter: Kovalchuk’s agent told SovSport that he’s hasn’t received any indication that Kovalchuk is considering the KHL. (This is great news for my fantasy hockey keeper team. The Aki Bergala’s are hoping the Kings steal him away from the Devils)
- Dmitry Chesnokov via twitter: Alexander Semin was in a car accident. A police spokesman said that he wasn’t hurt when his mercedes collided with a Lada.
- Peter Adler of the Edmonton Journal: The Washington Capitals have been talking to the Edmonton Oilers about Sheldon Souray, and the Vancouver Canucks about Kevin Bieksa. Tomas Fleischmann has been rumored to be heading the other way in both potential deals.
- Chris Botta via twitter: Islanders 2008 3rd round pick, Kirill Petrov will be staying in the KHL next sesason according to his coach at Kazan. He has 2 years left on KHL contract.
- Dave Fuller of the Toronto Sun: Brian Burke would like the “World Cup of Hockey” to be brought back and played every 2 years as an alternate to the IIHF World Championship. The NHL and the players are barely compensated for World Championship and the Olympics.
“Each NHL team shuts down their business for close to three weeks while the Olympic Games are played. In return, fans, management and owners are often rewarded with tired or broken players on their return from Olympic competition.
“And it’s not fair that the athletes themselves are not compensated for their participation. They run the risk of injury in international tournaments, which can threaten their NHL livelihood.”
- Steve MacFarlane of the Calgary Sun: The Calgary Flames currently have 22 players under contract at $61 million. There’s still plenty of time for the team to get under the $59.4 million salary cap. The team chose not to buyout Ales Kotalik, which would have put them under the salary cap. They have 8 defenseman on 1-way contracts. The Flames could move one of their defenseman, or bury one in the minors.
- Tom Reed of the Columbus Dispatch: The Blue Jackets are still talking to the Canucks about defenseman Kevin Bieksa.
Belanger to Caps, and Fleischmann on the way out? Kaberle interest varies
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL Free Agents, NHL Rumors on August 12th, 2010
- James Mirtle of the Globe and Mail: Sources saying Eric Belanger has reached a deal with the Washington Capitals. The Capitals might be moving out a forward for a defenseman before they announce the signing. Brian Burke has said they are not in discussion with the Capitals about Tomas Kaberle. The Capitals could be looking at Kevin Bieksa, Sheldon Souray or others. The Capitals are also said to be in on Willie Mitchell.
- Spector’s Hockey via twitter: The Capitals could be dealing Tomas Fleischmann for a defenseman.
- Lyle Richardson of Fox Sports: The number of teams interested in Tomas Kaberle varies between 6 and 12 depending on the source, and levels of interest varies as well. The Kings and Devils may be more concerned with Ilya Kovalchuk. The Sharks may not want to part with a top-6 forward. The Ducks don’t want to trade Bobby Ryan. The Stars and Blues have their own salary cap. Red Wings are at the cap and have their top defensive corps set. Boston has cap issues, but would like to move Savard, Burke said in June he wasn’t interested in him. The Flyers have been interested in the past, but may not be willing to part with Jeff Carter anymore for him. Sabres are another team that could be interested, but they don’t make a lot moves in the off-season. Columbus has kicked tires but find the price a little high. The Lightning could be interested but they brought in Pavel Kubina earlier in the summer.
- Will DePaoli via twitter: The Kings could be looking to get back in on Kovalchuk, but he’ll renegotiate with the Devils first.
- Andy Strickland via twitter: Blues GM Doug Armstrong doesn’t see anything else happening before training camp.
The Guy who won’t sign … Elias hoping for Kaberle … Neal and Stars not close
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL Free Agents, NHL Rumors on July 14th, 2010
- Helene Elliott of the LA Times: Ilya Kovalchuk left Los Angeles Tuesday afternoon, his agent stayed to have more talks with GM Dean Lombardi, but left last night without a deal in place. There were rumors that the talks were off yesterday, but also rumors that things were progressing. The Kings wouldn’t say anything. I can’t wait for all this to be over, I’m getting tired of reading/writing about it, sign for $8 million and be done with it.
- Chuck Gormley of the Courier Post: With the re-signing of Daniel Carcillo yesterday, and with the Darrol Powe still remaining, the Flyers could be about $2.75 million over the cap. Simon Gagne is most likely on his way out according to reports, the LA Kings, Maple Leafs and Rangers showing interest.
- Rich Chere of the Star-Ledger: Patrick Elias throws out his 2-cents saying the Devils should trade for Tomas Kaberle. He also thinks that Petr Sykora should get a tryout with the team. He hasn’t heard from Kovalchuk, and doesn’t know his intentions.
- Pierre LeBrun via Twitter: Maple Leafs still listening to offers for Tomas Kaberle according to source in the front office.
- Mike Heika of the Dallas Morning News: Heika believes the Stars have offered James Neal a 2 year deal worth $2.5 million a season, but Neal wants more money and a longer term. He isn’t sure what the Stars want to sign Nicklas Grossman for. They’d probably like to keep Matt Niskanen at his $900,000 qualifying offer. Heika doesn’t think any will get an offer sheet, and they could let Neal sit out part of training if they have to as they have plenty of left wingers.
- Pierre LeBrun via Twitter: Nothing new regarding Marc Savard.
- Kevin Paul Dupont of the Boston Globe: Blake Wheeler’s arbitration hearing is set for July 27th, but both sides would like to avoid it. They are expected to go to arbitration with recently acquired Gregory Campbell on the 22nd.
- Tarik El-Bashir via Twitter: The Capitals and Tomas Fleischmann are “talking” according to GM George McPhee, but didn’t sound like anything was imminent.
- Aaron Portzline via Twitter: Blue Jackets GM Scott Howson hasn’t had any contract extension talks with the Steve Mason or Jakub Voracek, but hasn’t ruled it out for later in the summer.
Gagne will waive his no-trade clause … Kaberle wouldn’t happen until next week … Ducks-Ryan talks “done for a while”
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL News on July 3rd, 2010
Anthony Sanfilippo of the Delaware County Daily Times: Simon Gagne has agreed to waive his no trade clause. The Flyers don’t have a deal in place for Gagne though. The Flyers would like to move Gagne to free up some cap space to re-sign Darroll Powe and Dan Carcillo, and take a run at a higher priced goalie. Marty Turco really wants to go to Philly. The LA Kings could be interested in Gagne. Rumors are that it could involve several players, but is most likely to involve a player and draft picks. James van Riemsdyk name has also been mentioned.
Helene Elliott of the LA Times: LA Kings GM Dean Lombardi continues to work on “a number of different scenarios”. Ilya Kovalchuk is of course the big one, but he’s rumored to be getting a 10 year, $100 million offer from the Islanders, which may be too big for the Kings to match. The Isles are $9 million under salary for and are looking to build a new arena. There are also reports that the Kings may be interested in Gagne, though that would depend on if they land Kovalchuk.
Lance Hornby of the Toronto Sun: Any Tomas Kaberle deal not likely to happen until next week due to the long weekend. Burke doesn’t expect much action on free agents this weekend as well. He won’t make a pitch for Kovalchuk ‘unless the bottom right out of the market’. Burke had agents for 2 ex-Leafs calling him.
Lance Hornby of the Toronto Sun: The Anaheim Ducks are “done for a while” according to GM Bob Murray in regards to their talks with RFA Bobby Ryan. Ryan said he didn’t expect to make more money than Ryan Getzlaf and Corey Perry, then he turned down a 5-year, $25 million deal.
Tarik El-Bashir of the Washington Post: The Washington Capitals may look to fill their 2nd-4th line centers with a player from within the organization. The leading candidates so far would be converted winger Tomas Fleischmann, and inexperienced Mathieu Perrault and Marcus Johansson.
Ryan to Leafs unlikely … Volchenkov and Spezza update … Bruins how to trade Thomas this week
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL Free Agents, NHL News, NHL Rumors on June 22nd, 2010
- Lance Hornby of the Toronto Sun: Despite some wishes from Leaf Nation, it’s unlikely that Bobby Ryan will end up with the Toronto Maple Leafs. The Leafs have made no contact with the Ducks, but have been monitoring the situation. Ryan has been a little worried about the lack of progress on contract talks. He also denied reports that he’s looking for Corey Perry/Ryan Getzlaf money, $5.325 million. “I don’t want to force (management’s) hand and I don’t want them to force mine,” Ryan said. “I want to get it closed out before hand. There hasn’t been anything that’s gone in the right direction. But there’s no hostility.”
- Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun: If Anton Volchenkov and the Ottawa Senators can’t come to an agreement soon, the Senators may deal his negotiating rights. Volchenkov is looking for $4.5-5 million per season. If they don’t re-sign him, they will look to bring in a more mobile defenseman, possibly Sheldon Souray who they’ve shown a little interest in. The Sens hope to bring back Matt Cullen and Andy Sutton. It’s unlikely the Senators will move up from their 16th draft slot.
- Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun: If the Senators are going to trade Jason Spezza, they’ll be hoping to get something done before July 1st, as Spezza is owed $4 million on Canada Day. I’m sure other teams know this and will look to make a deal afterwards. The Senators may find there are limited teams interested in taking on his remaining 5 years and $33 million, and that willing give back a fair return for him. Teams that could be in the market for a center; Panthers, Sharks, Flames, Bruins, Oilers, Kings, and Wild.
- Ken Warren of the Ottawa Citizen: Bryan Murray isn’t going to trade Jason Spezza just for the sake of trading him. “He’s a player that we’re counting on being an important part of our hockey team, but like every player, there’s a possibility I get an offer that I can’t refuse,” Murray said Monday.
- Joe Haggery of CSNNE: One of the Bruins top priorities heading in to this weekends draft is finding a trade partner for Tim Thomas. The San Jose Sharks and Tampa Bay Lightning are said to have some discussions, and if the Flyers are able to shed some salary, they could enter the mix. Thomas had hip surgery after the playoffs, is owed $15 million over the next 3 years, and has a no-trade clause in 2 of the 3 years.
- Tarik El-Bashir of the Washington Post: The Washington Capitals and Tomas Fleischmann don’t appear to be close on a deal for the RFA. The Capitals sent him a qualifying offer, a 5% increase on his 2009-10 salary of $725,000. Fleischmann is looking for a multi-year deal. Fleischmann may be using Tomas Plekanec as a comparable, he made $2.75 million last year, but is looking in the $5 million range on a new deal.
- Richard Durrett of ESPN: Mike Modano told ESPN radio that if he decides to return to play another season, he hasn’t ruled out signing with someone other than the Dallas Stars if the team has a legitimate shot at the Cup.
- Chris McCosky of the Detroit News: Detroit Red Wings GM Ken Holland may look to add an enforcer through trade or free agency. The Wings currently sit at $54.2 million for 18 players, with several RFAs to re-sign, so it would have to be an enforcer/agitator willing to work for cheap. Possible players could be Kryotopher Barch, Derek Boogaard, Cody McCormick, Jody Shelley, and Georges Laraque (after he’s bought out).
- Kevin Allen via Twitter: Dustin Byfuglien is definitely available. I think the ‘Hawks will capitalize on Byfuglien’s strong playoff performance.
Colorado Defenseman Outlook … Lightning not good for Yzerman? Hamhuis a good fit in Minnesota
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL Free Agents, NHL News, NHL Rumors on May 3rd, 2010
- John Matheson of the Edmonton Journal: Matheson doesn’t think Steve Yzerman will take the Tampa Bay Lightning GM job, as they are “set up to fail”. The Oilers should go after Dustin Byfuglien and his $3 million contract. They have 2 2nd round picks this year and prospect Riley Nash, that could be used in some sort of package. The Blackhawks will be looking to dump some salary this off-season.
- John Matheson of the Edmonton Journal: Raffi Torres’ probably won’t be getting the nice contract he’d hoped for, as he was inconsistent with Buffalo down the stretch and was a healthy scratch in their final playoff game. The Predators will look to re-sign Patrick Hornqvist but probably won’t have the money for Dan Hamhuis. Hamhuis would be a great fit in Minnesota. Zbynek Michalek may look to join his brother Milan in Ottawa. Tom Poti, after taking a puck in the face in game 6 of the Cap-Canadiens series, required 4 plates to repair the damage. The Capitals probably won’t bring back Jose Theodore, Brendan Morrison and Shaone Morrisonn. They may also look at trading Tomas Fleischman, who despite a 51 point season, was a healthy scratch in the game the Caps were eliminated.
- Dave Molinari of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette: A reader asks Molinari of the possibility of the Pittsburgh Penguins going after Anton Volchenkov. Molinari thinks it would have to depend on what the Penguins want to do with Sergei Gonchar, Jordan Leopold, Mark Eaton, and Jay McKee. If they don’t want to pay Gonchar the big money, it could be a possibility.
- Terry Frei of the Denver Post: The Colorado Avalanche defensive corps outlook for next season. Ruslan Salei and Brett Clark’s combined $6.5 million salaries are most likley both gone. The 39-year old Adam Foote’s 2 year deal expires, but he could be back on a salary that is maybe less than the $3 million cap hit he had this year. They’d like to move John-Michael Liles but he has 2 years and $8.4 million left. Scott Hannan is at $4.5 million and would be hard to move at that number. Kyle Comiskey is at a friendly $600,000 so he will most likely be back. They will look to re-signing Kyle Quincey. They will mostly likely have a top 6 of Foot, Quincey, Liles, Cuminskey, and Ryan Wilson. Defensive prospects are Kevin Shattenkirk, Colby Cohen, Tyson Barrie, Stefan Elliott and Cameron Gaunce.
Injury Updates … Is Tampa Right for Yzerman? Plenty of Free Agents in Washington
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL Free Agents, NHL Injuries, NHL Rumors on May 2nd, 2010
- Dave Stubbs of the Montreal Gazette: Andre Markov returned to Montreal after game 1. He sustained a knee injury that will keep him out indefinitely. He will not require surgery.
- Dave Molinari of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette: Jordan Staal is out indefinitely after having surgery to repair a damaged tendon on the top of his foot.
- Mark Emmons of the San Jose Mercury News: Patrick Marleau is expected back in the line for game 2 after missing game 1 with the flu. He returned to the ice yesterday, but was skating with Torrey Mitchell and Manny Malhotra. Logan Couture moved up with Joe Thornton and Dany Heatley.
- Corey Masisak of CSN: The Washington Capitals have 11 players that are free agents this year. Nicklas Backstrom is looking to sign a long term extension with the club, and will probably be in the $7 million range. They also have 20 goal scorers, Eric Fehr and Tomas Fleischmann, who are both RFAs and will require a nice raise. Jose Theodore is a UFA and though there is a chance he’ll be back at a reduced salary (his contract was 2 year, $9 million), I don’t see that happening. Of the 4 players acquired at the deadline (Eric Belanger, Joe Corvo, Scott Walker and Milan Jurcina), probably only Belanger would be re-signed. Young Dmen, John Carlson and Karl Alzner, are looking like they are ready to be full time NHL defenseman.
- Pierre LeBrun of ESPN: Is Tampa Bay the right situtation for Steve Yzerman? “I’m very lucky and happy to have a position with the Red Wings,” Yzerman told ESPN.com. “I would love to run a team one day and realize I will have to leave here to do that. But the situation has to be right, for me and my family. Believe it or not, being a part of this organization and living in Detroit is something I cherish. “[But] if the right opportunity presents itself, I would definitely consider it.”
Hudler Officially a Wing Later this Week … A Regeher to Capitals Thought? Hurricanes Draft Wish … Big Contract for Chris Stewart?
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL Entry Draft, NHL Free Agents, NHL News, NHL Rumors on April 26th, 2010
- Ansar Khan of MLive: The agreement to bring Jiri Hudler back to the Detroit Red Wings should be finalized by GM Ken Holland and Hudler’s agent sometime this week. In the next couple days, Hudler’s camp should be able to make it official that he’s being released from his KHL contract. When adding his salary cap number of $2.875 million, the Red Wings will have 14 players under contract at a $43.6 million cap number.
- Jim Matheson of the Edmonton Journal: The Red Wings will have to let Jason Williams, Kirk Maltby, and Brad May walk to fit in Hudler’s salary. Matheson thinks the Capitals should offer Tomas Fleischman or Eric Fehr and a pick to the Flames for Robyn Regehr.
- Paul Branecky of NHL.com: Carolina Hurricanes GM Jim Rutherford may have tipped their NHL draft wish in a recent interview. “If we end up getting one of these top-three guys, one of them could end up making the team,” said Rutherford. Rutherford is referring to defenseman, Cam Fowler, Brandon Gormley and Erik Gudbranson. The Canes pick #7, so they’ll need couple teams that are picking between #3-6 to select forwards. - Terry Frei of the Denver Post: Chris Stewart of the Colorado Avalanche is a restricted free agent, and could be in-line for a nice raise. Stewart had a breakout season in the final year of his entry level contract, recording 28 goals and 36 assists for 64 points in 77 games. Frei likens Stewart’s situation and stats to Corey Perry and his 5 year, $26.25 deal that he signed in 2008.

News from the Capitals Camp
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL News, NHL Rumors on September 14th, 2009
Washington Capitals winger, Tomas Fleischmann, will miss the start of the season as he’s out indefinitely with a blood clot in his leg. Fleischmann was tabbed a top 6 forward for the Caps heading in to camp, after potting 19 goals last season. The word is that he’ll begin skating early October, with the hope of returning to the lineup late October.
In other Capitals news, Michael Nylander, is the only player to have not reported to camp yet. Nylander is supposedly on his way though. He demanded a traded during the offseason because he was unhappy with the dimished role, but no team was willing to take on his $4.875 salary, which you can’t really blame them.
