Avery could return to Rangers … Alfie could retire after season … Havlat’s status uncertain … Habs claim Betts … Hulsizer closing in on Blues
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL Injuries, NHL News, NHL Rumors on October 6th, 2011
- Larry Brooks of the NY Post: Rangers GM Glen Sather said that Sean Avery could be back with the Rangers at some point. “Of course we could recall him if he’s in Hartford and earns that,” Sather said. “You never know; somebody could play his way off this team.”
- James Gordon of the Ottawa Citizen: This could be Senators captain Daniel Alfredsson last NHL season:
“It all depends on how I feel, but I’m going to play like this is my last year and we’ll see how it goes. I think I approach it that way — that it could be the last one because you never know. I’m just going to give it everything I have and have no regrets looking back after.”
Alfie hasn’t ruled out heading to a cup contender:
“That might change, but as of right now, I have no desire to do that. I haven’t even thought about it that way. I’m committed to stay here, but who knows: things could change come February or March. But right now, I’d say ‘no’ to that question.”
- David Pollak of the San Jose Mercury News: A final decision on whether Martin Havlat plays in Saturday’s opener has yet to be determined as Havlat was still on his way back from Cleveland. ESPN was saying he won’t be in the lineup. Sharks want to talk with Havlat and trainers. Tommy Wingels could take Havlat’s spot on the 2nd line if he’s not able to go.
- Pat Hickey of the Montreal Gazette: The Canadiens have claimed Blair Betts off waivers from the Flyers yesterday. He’s expected to be in the lineup tonight for their opener against the Maple Leafs. Betts replaces Andreas Engqvist on the 4th line. Aaron Palushaj and Michael Blunden were sent to the AHL and Jeff Woywitka could join them if he clears waivers. Andrei Markov and Ryan White have been placed on IR.
- Jeremy Rutherford of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch: It sounds like there is a verbal agreement for Matthew Hulsizer to buy the majority stake in the Blues, and that Dave Checketts could stay on in some capacity. 2 sources are saying a letter of intent has been signed, while another is saying it’s a verbal agreement and far from completion.
- Terry Koshan of the Toronto Sun: Tyler Bozak is not thinking about trade rumors that surround him and defenseman Carl Gunnarsson. “I’m not thinking of it, not at all,” Bozak said. “We have a home opener (on Thursday night) and that’s the only thing on my mind right now. “(Steckel) will help us a ton. We saw what Burkie (general manager Brian Burke) can do and he has been doing a great job.”
- Jason Botchford via twitter: Canucks forward Ryan Kesler has been cleared for contact. Botchford thinks he’ll be playing in 2 weeks barring any setbacks.
- Eric Stephens via twitter: Ducks put defenseman Toni Lydman and Matt Smaby on IR.
- Tracey Myers via twitter: Blackhawks center David Bolland is now questionable for the weekend.
- Dan Tencer via twitter: Oilers defenseman Ryan Whitney says it’s unlikely that he’ll play on Sunday, but isn’t closing the book on it. Dan Tencer via twitter: Oilers defenseman Ladislav Smid is hopeful he’ll be able to go this weekend.
- JP Hoornstra via twitter: The Kings have sent Slava Voynov to the AHL and placed Jake Muzzin and Colin Fraser to the IR.
- Katie Strang via twitter: Devils name Zach Parise captain, Kovalchuck and Elias get A’s.
Richards being patient … Lydman has surgery, Sutton struggled … Sabres could use a veteran D … Quick playoff notes
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL Free Agents, NHL Injuries, NHL News on May 4th, 2011
- Mark Stepneski of the ESPN Dallas: Brad Richards is being patient with his decision to hit the free agent market on July 1st.
“Right now there is no deadline in sight because July 1 is so far away,” Richards said. “It’s try to get my body back to normal, relax and think things over and give it a chance over there in Dallas to see what happens with ownership. It sounds like things are moving a little bit right now. We’ll see. Sometimes you hear things differently than what’s actually happening. At least there is some movement and talk.”
The Stars could have a new owner, Tom Gaglardi, by early June.
“When it’s closer to a deadline or a time where you have to make a decision, that might be a time to think about what’s going to happen in the future,” he said. “Right now, there are no worries in my mind to do anything because there is no rush.”
- Eric Stephens of the OC Register: Anaheim Ducks defenseman Toni Lydman had surgery to repair a torn labrum on his right shoulder. It’s expected to be a 5 month recovery, so he might not be ready for the start of the season. He had been playing with the injury for over 2 months.
- Eric Stephens of the OC Register: Ducks defenseman Andy Sutton,
“It was the worst year of my career,” he said. ”It was frustrating. Really, I think I just didn’t really recover after I had the hand surgery. I felt like I was constantly slipping down the mountain, couldn’t regain my footing and lost a lot of confidence. It sort of left me not playing like myself.”
It’s likely he’ll be back the with the Ducks next season, he’s owed $2.25 million. It would be tough finding a trade partner, and he’d be owed $750,000 for the next 2 seasons if they were to buy him out.
- Jesse Spector of the NY Daily News: NY Rangers defenseman Michael Del Zotto had surgery to repair a sports hernia. He should be ready by training camp.
- Jerry Sullivan of the Buffalo News: The Sabres new owner Terry Pegula seems to understands the importance of veteran defenseman, and maybe he’ll provide the funds to enable them to bring in someone. Potential UFA’s are James Wisniewski, Tomas Kaberle, Kevin Bieksa and Christian Ehrhoff. The Canucks likely won’t be able to afford both Bieksa and Ehrhoff.
- Randy Phillips of the Montreal Gazette: Mathieu Darche is 1 of 9 UFA’s for the Montreal Canadiens,
“It’s been 10 years that I’ve ended a season with a question mark over my head,” the 34-year-old forward said. “Obviously, I want to be back, but at this point it’s not entirely in my control.
“I’ll see what they have to say and I’m sure we’ll talk soon,” he added. “That’s where it is right now. We’ll deal with it as it comes.”
- Pierre LeBrun via twitter: The San Jose Sharks switched up their lines at practice yesterday, though not sure if they will be the same for today’s game. Couture-Thornton-Setoguchi and Clowe-Marleau-Heatley.
- Frank Seravalli via twitter: Flyers Jeff Carter, Michael Leighton, Andreas Nodl and Chris Pronger are all listed as day-to-day.
- Elliotte Friedman via twitter: Bruins defenseman Adam McQuaid is listed as day-to-day with a sprained neck according to Claude Julien.
- Darren Dreger via twitter: The City of Glendale has paid $25 million to cover a portion of the losses for the Coyotes.
Stumbling block for Coyotes sale … Leclaire injured … Fraser out 4-6 weeks … Lydman game time decision
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL Injuries, NHL News, NHL Rumors on October 15th, 2010
- David Shoalts of the Globe and Mail: Chicago businessman Matthew Hulsizer has an agreement in principle with the City of Glendale which could give him $100 million from parking, taxes and property levies to help cover losses, on a multi-year lease. Despite this positive news for Coyotes fans in Phoenix, the bad news follows in that he wants a big discount on the $165 million purchase price. The NHL bought the team for $140 million. They have until Dec. 31st to find local buyer or the team could be up for relocation. The NHL already has bid from Winnipeg based True North Sports and Entertainment Ltd. for at least $165 million. An NHL governor has said that Hulsizer was told by Gary Bettman that the team would not be sold for less than what the team has cost the league. They may have put up $175 million, with the City of Glendale kicking in $25 million. According to a report in the Arizona Republic, the City of Glendale owes a total of $500 million for sports facilities it’s built, $180 for the Jobing.com arena.
- Ken Warren of the Ottawa Citizen: The Ottawa Senators lone bright spot this season is out with a lower-body injury. Pascal Leclaire last just over 2 minutes into the game last night, suffering the injury during a scrum. The severity of the injury is unknown at the moment. Brian Elliot would be starter if Leclaire is out, Robin Lehner may get the call to back him up as Mike Brodeur is out with an injury.
- Tom Gulitti of the Bergen Record: The New Jersey Devils have lost defenseman Mark Fraser for 4-6 weeks after a pin was inserted into his fractured right hand. No decision has been made yet if he’ll be placed on IR. Anton Volchenkov will miss tonight’s game against the Avalanche, but they will not say if he’s out tomorrow night or not. Brian Rolston’s hernia surgery was successful, he’ll be out 4-6 weeks.
- Curtis Zupke of the OC Register: It won’t be known probably until after the pre-game warmup if Anaheim Ducks Dman, Toni Lydman, will make his season debut. Lydman hasn’t played a game since last April, and missed all of training camp. Andreas Lilja is still waiting to get his work visa.
- Adrian Dater of the Denver Post: Colorado Avalanche goalie Craig Anderson will be a UFA at seasons end, and Dater wonders if he’d take a ‘hometown’ discount on an extension. The Avs were a team that offered Anderson a chance to be a #1 goalie. He could get $4.5 million a year offer if he put played like he did last year. If Anderson and Avs can’t get a deal done, they can not left him go for nothing.
- Brett Cyrgalis of the NY Post: NY Islanders rookie Nino Niederreiter is making his case to stay with the club beyond 9 games. He’ll play is 4th game tonight, the 9th game would be Oct. 27th. Niederreiter scored his 1st NHL goal on Tuesday. “He’s got a good head on his shoulders,” [coach] Gordon said. “I think he’s a focused individual. He doesn’t just take anything for granted. He works at things. He’s a good listener. Those are the things that, as a coach, you can’t take for granted because not every 18-year-old is like that.”
- Jeff Klein of the NY Times: NY Rangers captain Chris Drury will return to the lineup tonight against the Maple Leafs, and will likely replace Erik Christensen (groin) centering Marian Gaborik and Alex Frolov. Matt Gilroy will make his season debut replacing Mike Sauer.
Z. Michalek out 2-4 weeks … Lydman cleared to play … Berglund on the block? Avs-Devs talks done?

- Will DePaoli via twitter: Penguins defenseman Zbynek Michalek will be out 2-4 weeks.
- Pierre LeBrun via twitter: Toni Lydman has been cleared, but not sure when he’ll play his first game for the Anaheim Ducks.
- Andy Strickland of True Hockey: Stickland is hearing trade whispers involving Patrik Berglund of the St. Louis Blues.
- Adrian Dater of the Denver Post: With Brian Rolston going on LTIR, it might have ended the talk of a Colorado Avalanche-NJ Devils trade. The Avs could use some power play and/or defensive help. 16 scouts took in Tuesday’s Avs-Wings game. It was rumored a couple weeks ago that the Avs had interest in Jamie Langenbrunner.
- Brendan Hall of ESPN Boston: Bruins coach Claude Julien says Marc Savard is improving each day, but they won’t rush him along.
“He’s behind by at least a month, month and a half, already. We’ll have to be patient and give him a chance to come back. Right now, I don’t think there’s any reason why we should push this guy to get back, more than we should be helping him get back. That’s the thing we have to make sure we do here, is give him due time to make that comeback, and when he’s ready to make it, we’ll help him through it.”
- Jesse Spector via twitter: Rangers forward Tim Kennedy would need to go through re-entry waivers if they recalled him. Spector doesn’t think he’d get through re-entry, he also didn’t think he’d get through waivers to begin with.
- Toronto Sun: The NHLPA is investigating the New Jersey Devils for only using 15 skaters on Monday (used 16 last night), instead of the league minimum of 18. The NHLPA director of communications said, “We are currently reviewing this matter to ensure that the CBA is complied with and that any potential violation of the agreement is remedied,”
Chara next for Bruins … Laperriere doesn’t want to retire … Giroux X-rayed … Ivanans vs MacIntyre fight
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL News, NHL Rumors, NHL Videos on October 8th, 2010
- Kevin Paul Dupont of the Boston Globe: The Boston Bruins are also looking to lock up Zdeno Chara to a contract extension. The 33-year old Chara will be a UFA at the end of the season, and is reportedly looking for a deal that will take him to about his 40th birthday. Chara’s current deal has him at a $7.5 million cap hit, and could be looking for something similar. A 7 year, $50 million deal could get it done, that would average out to about $7.14 million per season.
- Stephen Harris of the Boston Herald: “My goal,” said Chara, “is not to shoot to be playing at 40, it is to shoot to play maybe until 45.” Chara talks about his time and Boston and how he’d like to stay.
- Frank Seravalli of the Philadelphia Daily News: Philadelphia Flyers Ian Laperriere, out with post-concussion syndrome, sent the following text message to the Daily News,”My quote is: I’m not retiring and I’m just trying to feel better”.

- Eric Stephens and Curtis Zupke of the OC Register: Anaheim Ducks defenseman Toni Lydman is accompanying the team on their opening trip. He has only taken part in 2 practices so far.
- Ted Kulfan of the Detroit News: The Detroit Red Wings home opener is tonight, Justin Abdelkader (ribs) and Kris Draper (groin) are out, Todd Bertuzzi (back) may not be ready to go, Kirk Maltby could be called up.
- Raitis Ivanans vs Steve MacIntyre: Ivanans takes a good one on the beak.
More on Salvador and possible options for the Devils … Toni Lydman skates with Ducks … Backup in Nashville settled
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL Rumors on October 1st, 2010
- Mark Everson of the NY Post: Travis Zajac’s name continues to float around. Two GM’s think that the New Jersey Devils will carry 20 or 21 players on their roster. Teams must dress 20 players for each game. Keeping 21 players could save them $1 million, 20 players $1.5 million. If they keep 21, including the injured Bryce Salvador (can’t really do anything with Salvador while he’s injured), they would have to get rid of $2.5 million in salary.
- Tom Gulitti via twitter: Devils GM Lou Lamoirello says that Salvador has a concussion and will out indefinitely. No decision has been made if he’ll be placed on LTIR.
- Kevin Allen of the USA Today: Doesn’t see anyone trading for Brian Rolston. Allen also doesn’t think Dustin Byfuglien will stay on defense for the entire season. Magnus Paajarvi could outscore Taylor Hall this year. The Predators could look to sign a veteran goalie.
- Eric Stephens of the OC Register: Toni Lydman was on the ice for his first on-ice workout with the Anaheim Ducks. Lydman had an episode of double vision almost a month ago and has missed all of training while they try to figure out what caused it, which they haven’t been able to pin-point as of yet.
- Bryan Mullen of the Tennessean: Mark Dekanich was assigned to Milwaukee, which means that Andres Lindback won the backup job in Nashville.
- Tom Gulitti of the Bergon Record: Martin Brodeur will 40 years old in 2 years when his contract expires.
“I don’t know if it’s going to be that’s all after this,” he told me today. “I plan the long-range (with) what I have (with his contract) and that’s what I’m focusing on, to be as good as I can be for those two years and have that goal. We’ll see how I feel next year. Next year, in the middle of the season, that’s when you’re going to start thinking about it more because there’s a lot of things that could happen with the NHL and the NHLPA. That (the end of the CBA) comes right after that season. So, who knows? I can’t just commit myself and then have a lockout or if there’s a lockout (for a full year), do I go back the year after?”
Burns Cancer takes a turn for the worse … Injury updates on Salo, Burrows, Salmela and Lydman
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL Injuries, NHL News on September 17th, 2010
- Tom Gulitti of the Bergon Record: Former coach Pat Quinn’s battle with lung cancer may have taken a turn for the worse. Burns returned to his home in Quebec, and is with his family. In 2004 Burns was diagnosed with colon cancer, a year later he was diagnosed with liver cancer. In 2009 it was made public that he had lung cancer, and wouldn’t undergo treatments for it.
- Greg Brady via twitter: Vancouver Canucks GM Mike Gillis said Sami Salo will be out at least 5 months and Alex Burrows could miss the start of the regular season.
- Tom Gulitti via twitter: New Jersey Devils defenseman Anssi Salmela is a couple months behind in his recovery from surgery on his torn ACL and meniscus.
- Helene Elliott of the LA Times: Last week Anaheim Ducks defenseman Toni Lydman experience a bout of “double vision”. Lydman has experience migraines in the past, but they are not sure if that was the cause of the problem. They’ve been doing tests for the last week, and are still unsure what caused it. He won’t be allowed to participate in their training camp until they find out what the problems is, and how to treat it.
Horton on the move before the draft? Stars need a pucking moving defenseman … To get Chiarelli’s attention, Oilers could ….
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL Free Agents, NHL Rumors on June 21st, 2010
DJ Been of WEEI: There were reports that this weekend that the Bruins were close to trading for Nathan Horton, but it hasn’t happened yet. Several teams may also be close on a deal for him. The Maple Leafs are another possible destination for him.
Bob McKenzie via Twitter: Nathan Horton hasn’t been moved yet, but will be moved, the Bruins are right in it.
Jim Matheson of the Edmonton Journal: If the Oilers wanted to see if they land the top 2 picks, offering Ales Hemsky and Jordan Eberle or Magnus Paajarvi-Svensson might get Chiarelli’s attention. Chicago could be asking for a 2nd round pick to get Kris Versteeg, plus taking Brent Sopel’s $2.2 million contract off their hands. The Sabres could use a defenseman like Sheldon Souray. The Sabres are looking to move Derek Roy, Tim Connolly, and Drew Stafford. The Sabres aren’t that interested in re-signing Henrik Tallinder and Toni Lydman.
Mike Heika of the Dallas Morning News: The Dallas Stars have a surplus of left handed forwards (no right handed centers, and potentially only 1 right handed forward. The Stars could really use a puck moving defenseman, and could send out one of their top-6 wingers, James Neal, Jamie Benn, Brenden Morrow or Steve Ott.
Craig Custance of the SportingNews: The San Jose Sharks could be looking for a top-tier defenseman with possible targets, Anton Volchenkov, Paul Martin, Sergei Gonchar, and Zbynek Michalek.
Options if Lidstrom Retires … Yzerman still considering Tampa? A new look Shark team next year?
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL Free Agents, NHL News, NHL Rumors on May 22nd, 2010
- George Malik of MLive: If Nicklas Lidstrom retires, Brian Rafalski could step up into a larger role. One option available for the Red Wings would be to call up the Maple Leafs and see what it would take for Tomas Kaberle. They could also look at 2nd tier defenseman like Henrik Tallinder, Toni Lydman, Derek Morris, Joe Corvo, and Kim Johnsson.
- Ansar Khan of MLive: There are mixed reports on if Steve Yzerman is still considered a candidate or interested in the Tampa Bay Lightning GM position. It was report earlier that he wasn’t interested, but that may not be the case. When asked about it, “My response has always been not to comment,” Yzerman said. That might lead one to speculate that it’s still an option for him.
- Mike Brophy of Sportsnet: The Sharks are down 3-0, and it will take a miracle for them to come back and win the series versus the Blackhawks. Big changes could be coming from them in the off-season. Odds are looking good that Patrick Marleau won’t be back with the Sharks next season. Evgeni Nabokov is 34 and a UFA, and despite solid regular season numbers, he has a history of not performing in the playoffs. No one questions Joe Thornton’s talent, but the playoffs have a tendency of not bringing out the best of him, he’s a -10 heading into last night. GM Doug Wilson will also be on the hotseat as he’s the one who’s put together this team that has had some playoff woes the past couple seasons.
Krejci Out … Flames not firing anyone? Spezza on the block? Jokinen not going Minsk
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL Free Agents, NHL Injuries, NHL News, NHL Rumors on May 6th, 2010
- Steve Conroy of the Boston Herald: After being smoked by Mike Richards on a big open ice hit, David Krejci didn’t return to the game. He was taken to local hospital for further evaluation.
- George Johnson of the Calgary Herald: It’s looking more and more likely that the Calgary Flames are holding pat with regards to GM Darryl Sutter, their coaches, and management. This is based on the fact that there has been no news out of Calgary regarding it, and that the Draft and Free Agency are getting closer. There had been rumors that Sutter could be fired.
- Don Brennan of the Ottawa Sun: Brennan thinks the Senators should quietly see what they could get for Jason Spezza before his July 1st no-movement clause kicks in. It would be hard to replace another top, point-a-game player, but it could bring back a nice package. Fans blamed Spezza for their 1st round loss, something that obviously didn’t sit well with Spezza.
- Darren Dreger via Twitter: There is a rumor out there that Olli Jokinen is signing a deal with Minsk, Jokinen’s agent refutes it and says he’s hoping to play in the NHL next season.
- Dave Molinari of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette: A reader asks if Bill Guerin will be back next season. Molinari thinks Guerin will want to play next year, the lack of depth on the wings, and that he’s fit well with the team, most likely will mean he’ll be back. But a lot will depend on how much he wants and if the Pens really want to have the 39-year old back.
- Aaron Portzline and Tom Reed of the Columbus Dispatch: Scott Arniel met with the Blue Jackets last Saturday, and on Tuesday Kevin Dineen was the second candidate to interviewed by Columbus for their head coaching position. Other candidates that are expected to get interviews are Claude Noel (CBJ interim coach), Paul MacLean (Det. assist.) and Guy Boucher (AHL Hamilton).
- John Vogl of the Buffalo News: The Buffalo Sabres are faced with the decision if they want to resign Toni Lydman and Henrik Tallinder or not. Both will be unrestricted free agents, but will have to be at the right price if they’ll both want to be back. The 32-year old Lydman had a cap number of $2.875 million, the 31-year old Tallinder had an average of $2.56, and both could be looking for something similar, maybe more.
- The Ottawa Citizen: Daniel Alfredsson had successful hernia surgery on Tuesday, with recovery time expected to 4 to 6 weeks. Other Ottawa Senators having off-season surgery are Alex Kovalev and Milan Michalek (both ACL) and Chris Phillips (bunions).
