- Mark Emmons of the San Jose Mercury News: Joe Thornton is having preliminary talks with the San Jose Sharks about a contract extension. The 31-year old Thornton will be a UFA at seasons end. Thornton has a cap hit of $7.2 million this season according to capgeek.com.

- Mark Everson of the NY Post: Rumors are out there that Travis Zajac could be one of the players the New Jersey Devils move to make room for Ilya Kovalchuk. The Devils could be looking to move Bryce Salvador and Dainius Zubrus. The 25-year old Zajac is the teams number 1 center, and has a cap hit of $3.89 million for the next 3 years. Zajac had 25 goals and totalled 67 last year.
- Mike Hume of ESPN: Trading Zajac would be a serious hit to the Devils. Jason Arnott would then be the teams top center. Zajac could bring back a decent return in prospects and/or draft picks. The Washington Capitals have been looking for a 2nd line center and have a deep farm system. 2009 draft pick, Jacob Josefson, would be a possible internal replacement.
- Jimmy Murphy via twitter: Sources are telling Murphy that nothing will most likely come from the Marc Savard contract investigations. The investigation is hampering trade talks.

Morning Hits
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL Free Agents, NHL News on July 23rd, 2009
Some morning NHL news and notes for Thursday June 23rd.
- Travis Zajac gets a 4 year, $15.55 million contract from the Devils and avoids salary arbitration. $2.75 million in 2009-10, $3.5 million in 2010-11, $4.5 million in 2011-12 and $4.8 million 2012-13. Not a bad deal for the 24 year old.
- Marty Biron gets a 1 year, $1.4 million deal from the Islanders. In shocking developements, Rick Dipietro still has knee problems and may not be ready for the beginning of the season. Dipietro will begin skating in August. Biron could become trade bait late on in the season if Dipietro is able to remain healthy.
- The Maple Leafs re-signed minor leaguers, Darryl Boyce (2 years) and Alex Foster (1 year). If you’re not a Leaf fan or from their hometown, you’ve probably never head of these guys. Last years Leaf backup, Martin Gerber, has signed a 1 year deal with a club in the KHL. The signing of ‘The Monster’, Jonas Gustavsson, meant the Leafs didn’t plan on bringing Gerber back.
- The Vancouver Canucks have added forwards Tanner Glass and Guillaume Desbiens, and Dman Mike Funk.
Travis Zajac Headed For Arbitration

The Devils would like to have avoided salary arbitration with center Travis Zajac, but that is now unlikely.
Zajac and general manager Lou Lamoriello are headed for Friday’s arbitration hearing, a process that is often nasty.(source-NJ.com)
The Devils have always had success in getting players to take a hometown discount to play in a winning environment. Martin Brodeur, at 5.2 million per year, is a great example of this but it appears Zajac isn’t drinking Lou Lamoriello’s kool-aid.
Far be it from me to criticize Lamoriello when it comes to running a tight ship for the Devils but at 23 this kid is only going to get better. With 20 goals and 62 points playing in all 82 games last year, Zajac is the kind of piece you want to build around. That said, maybe Travis should try to string together a couple more productive seasons before looking to cash in. It will be interesting to see what comes out of the salary arbitration meetings.

- The Daily Herald out of Chicago mentions that the Maple Leafs and Blackhawks GM’s might be discussing a trade. The Hawks might be looking for a Dman, while the Leafs would like to move a Dman for a scoring forward. The article mentions Tomas Kaberle and Patrick Sharp. Both have similar cap hits.
- The New Jersey Devils might be looking to add free agent and one time Devil, Brendan Morrison. The Devils still need to sign RFA, Travis Zajac, who has filed for salary arbitration.
- The Columbus Blue Jackets are looking for a puck moving defenceman. The Sharks, Leafs, and Oilers have some Dmen who might fit the bill.
