- Bob McKenzie via twitter: The Capitals have fired Bruce Boudreau, and have hired Dale Hunter as their new head coach.
- Jim Matheson of the Edmonton Journal: If Jarome Iginla decides he’d accept a trade from the Flames, Matheson doesn’t see a big market for him as he carries a $7 million salary this year and next, and most Stanley Cup contenders are close to the ceiling or maxed out. Matheson wonders if the Stars would be interested. Blue Jackets forward Derick Brassard has been shopped around the league, but there have been no takers for him and his $3+ million salary. The Oilers would definitely like to acquire Cody Franson, but Maple Leafs GM Brian Burke is in no hurry to move him. Matheson keeps hearing that Sabres goalie is out with a concussion and wouldn’t mind if the Sabres dealt him. The Sabres could use a top center, but have other holes as well. His wife is a California based actress but no California based team needs a goalie. Will the Lightning be calling the Wild about their goaltenders during the summer? Josh Harding will be a UFA and Niklas Backstrom’s deal ends after next year. Would the Predators consider moving backup goalie Anders Lindback, and toss in a a Ryan Ellis or Jonathan Blum to get a forward? Matheson heard that the Wild turned down a Josh Harding for James van Riemsdyk trade when JVR was still at the University of New Hampshire a couple years ago.
- Helene Elliott of the LA Times: Ducks GM Bob Murray said he won’t fire coach Randy Carlyle and he won’t trade any of Ryan Getzlaf, Cory Perry or Bobby Ryan, though he has had offers for them.
- Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun: The Senators are 1 of 4 teams that have interest in Blue Jackets Derick Brassard. Brassard’s $3.2 million salary for the next 2 years is a stumbling block. The Sens, and pretty much every other team, have closed the book on Kyle Turris.
- Mike Heika of the Dallas Morning News: The Stars have placed Kari Lehtonen on the IR. They are still waiting for results from the MRI, but Heika thinks it could be a long-term injury. They have recalled Richard Bachman. Francis Wathier was also recalled, so Vernon Fiddler could be out.
- Jim Matheson of the Edmonton Journal: The Oilers could find out today the results for Taylor Hall’s MRI. If Hall is out for awhile, Matheson thinks they should move Magnus Paajarvi up with Shawn Horcoff and Ales Hemsky. If Paajarvi can’t cut with Horcoff and Hemsky, it might be time for him to spend a few weeks in Oklahoma City in the AHL. Renny said that sending Paajarvi down “has been discussed.”
- Jonas Siegel via twitter: Maple Leafs coach Ron Wilson expects Carl Gunnarsson and David Steckel to return on Wednesday.
- Rich Hammond of the LA Kings Insiders: Dustin Penner has been given clearance to resume full activity. He won’t play tonight, but should soon. Andrei Loktionov and Trent Hunter spot could be in jeopardy. Scott Parse hasn’t been on the ice in 3 weeks, and there is no indication when he’ll start.

- John Vogl of the Buffalo News: After the Sabres acquired the rights to Christian Ehrhoff, they sent the rights to Steve Montador to the Blackhawks for a conditional 2012 or 2013 7th round draft pick.
- Nick Kypreos via twitter: The Islanders reportedly offered Christian Ehrhoff a 6 year deal worth close to $33 million before his rights were moved on.
- Andy Strickland via twitter: An official announce should come later this morning, but the Blues and TJ Oshie have reached an agreement on a deal, possibly for 1 year.
- Darren Dreger via twitter: The Maple Leafs have shown interest in UFAs, Brad Richards, Christian Ehrhoff, Scottie Upshall, and Max Talbot.
- Aaron Portzline of the Columbus Dispatch: On James Wisniewski’s rights being sent to Columbus.
“I called James and his response was ‘Let’s go. We’re going,’” Zito said. “His level of enthusiasm for (Columbus) was pretty high.
“I grabbed a shirt and shoes and flew to Detroit (from Chicago) to meet him last night. Then we flew together to Columbus and got here around midnight. So here we are. I look forward to meeting with the guys and seeing what they’re thinking.”
Both sides are expected to meet around 8:30 this morning. Zito wouldn’t say the term and money they are seeking.
- Rob Rossi and Dejan Kovacevic of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review: Sources are saying the Penguins have offered Jaromir Jagr a 1 year deal worth $2 million. As of last night they still hadn’t heard back from him. The Red Wings and Canadiens have made offers to Jagr as well. Jagr was to land in the US late yesterday afternoon, but after 6 pm, Jagr’s agent Petr Svoboda was not returning messages. The Penguins are about $6 million below the cap, but would like to keep $1.5 million free for in-season moves. Aaron Asham signed last night for 1 year, $775,000. GM Ray Shero still hopes to re-sign Tyler Kennedy and Michael Rupp by Friday.
- Pat Hickey of the Montreal Gazette: The Montreal Canadiens will have some extra cash to spend tomorrow as Roman Hamrlik rejected their 1 year offer, and James Wisniewski rights were sent to Columbus. After Yannick Weber signed a 2 year deal worth $1.7 million, the Canadiens have 17 players under contract with a cap hit of just over $50 million. They still need to sign Josh Gorges, Ryan White, another forward and a backup goalie. Players that could interest the Canadiens are: Michael Rupp, Tyler Kennedy, Aaron Asham, Ville Leino, Ben Eager, Michael Handzus and Alexei Ponikarovsky.
- Ken Wiebe of the Winnipeg Sun: The Winnipeg Jets probably won’t be able to land a big name, but here is a list of players that could fit the mould of someone they might be interested in: Max Talbot, Joel Ward, Sean Bergenheim, Chris Higgins, Jonathan Ericsson, Cody McCormick, Vernon Fiddler, Rick Rypien, Shane Hnidy, Jason Jaffray.
- Don Brennan of the Ottawa Sun: The Senators would like to sign a player who could play on their top 2 lines and a backup goalie.
“There will be a couple of guys we will discuss, and there might be the same type of situation that, after Day 1 or Day 2 or Day 3, the guy that we like hasn’t signed yet and is wondering what’s going to happen with himself, and may be very willing to come to a younger team, that he may feel he has a real good chance to get a good spot and produce.
“We need probably three goalies in the organization. we need a backup here, we need a backup in Binghamton, and we need a fifth guy. So right now, that’s been the talk here between our staff. But we’ve also looked at guys that are young and we think have Top 6 forward potential, but we have to see where it all plays out on Day 1 and Day 2.”

- Jim Gintonio of the Arizona Republic: Not re-signing Ilya Bryzgalov opens up some new windows for the Coyotes.
“It’s an opportunity to potentially spend less, hopefully find a way to be as good and use that excess resource in other ways to put a better team in front of our goaltending,” Maloney said. “So this to me isn’t something that we’re staring into our lemonade and going, ‘Woe is us.’ “
Coyotes GM Don Maloney has a 3-pronged strategy for his goaltending search. 1. Acquire top young goalie by trade: “There’s three or four in other organizations that may be available in a trade that would cost a good asset but may potentially solidify your goaltending for a long time; that’s one obvious way to look at it.” 2. Sign a UFA: “There’s two or three players in that grouping that we like. We think in our system with (goaltending coach) Sean Burke would be good fits for us.” Tomas Vokoun’s price may be too high. 3. Bring in a veteran goalie: “I’ve had a couple conversations (this week) regarding some very good established goaltenders on other clubs that for financial reasons they might be looking to make some changes.” The Coyotes expect to re-sign RFA Keith Yandle, and expect to pay a high price. Re-signing Vernon Fiddler, Radim Vrbata and Lauri Korpikoski are also on the Coyotes wish-list. Ed Jovanovski’s return is doubtful, Maloney hasn’t spoken with Jovo or his agent.
- Jesse Spector of the NY Daily News: The decision has been made by the Rangers to buyout Chris Drury, a source added “He’s gone.” The buyout will save the Rangers $3.3 million, he was scheduled to have a $7.05 million cap hit. Ryan Callahan contract talks are “just beginning”
- Eric Stephens of the OC Register: Ducks goalie Jonas Hiller will resume skating in July. Hiller has been bother by vertigo since Feb.
“He’s fine,” Murray said. “He’s in good spirits. We talked about a couple of things. He’ll be skating on the ice sometime around the middle of July. “He’ll be doing a camp early in the week and then skate with some pros after that.”
Ducks GM Bob Murray hasn’t spoken with UFA goalie Ray Emery. “I haven’t really thought about it at this time,” Murray said when asked about re-signing Emery. “We have Jonas and Dan Ellis. Until something tells me we don’t have that, then I’ll deal with that.”
- David Staples of the Edmonton Journal: Edmonton Oilers GM Steve Tambellini has been ‘talking out loud’ about the possibility of trading the 1st overall pick in the 2011 NHL draft. “I’ve had a few calls of people kicking the tires of how they can help me make the Oilers a better team,” Tambellini told reporters. “For me to move the No. 1 pick would have to be something exceptional. This is a huge building block again.” Staples thinks that if they were to trade the 1st pick, they would still need to pick in the top 5 or 6. The Oilers top scout sees Ryan Nugent-Hopkins and Adam Larsson as a cut above the rest (Jonathan Huberdeau, Dougie Hamilton, Gabriel Landeskog or possibly Sean Couturier).
- TSN: Forbes magazine is reporting that Gary Bettman has told Jim Balsillie that he could get an NHL team if he does not “create any more spectacles or bad publicity for the league”.
3 Big Free Agents For The Coyotes That Could Alter Their Look

Jim Gintonio of the Arizona Republic: There are 3 key parts to the Phoenix Coyotes that are free agents, 2 are unrestricted and 1 is restricted. Ilya Bryzgalov (UFA) will be looking for a big raise from his previous 3 year, $12.75 million deal. GM Don Maloney said the team won’t break the bank for 1 player. If Bryzgalov signs for a “hometown discout”, it would give the Coyotes more options for bringing in other players or re-signing their own. Keith Yandle is a restricted free agent and will be wanting a big raise from his current deal which paid him $1.2 million. He’ll be looking for a long-term deal, and Maloney has maintained he’ll be back. Ed Jovanovski would have to take a pay cut to return to the Coyotes, $6.5 million last year. If he leaves, he would free up several millions. The Coyotes total payroll will likely be around the $56 million range. They have 13 total free agents, 8 are unrestricted, so they could be a totally different looking team next year. 3 other UFA’s are Radim Vrbata, Vernon Fiddler and Eric Belanger. Players who could be good fits for the Coyotes are Jussi Jokinen (Car), Ville Leino (Phi) and Brooks Laich (Was). The Coyotes could trade the rights to Ilya Bryzgalov if they feel they can’t get him re-signed and gamble on Jason LaBarbera. Tomas Vokoun is likely too expensive to bring in. Mike Smith has some potential. UFA defenseman that could fit are Christian Ehrhoff, Kevin Bieksa and James Wisniewski.

- Ranaud Lavoie (RDS) via twitter: Doctors haven’t ruled out that Canadiens defenseman Andrei Markov might have to have surgery again. More will known later this week.
- Craig Custance via twitter: Bob Hartley hasn’t been contacted by the Islanders about coaching the team.
- Jim Gintonio of the Arizona Republic: The Phoenix Coyotes are in “holding pattern” with UFAs Ilya Bryzgalov, Ed Jovanovski, Radim Vrbata, Scottie Upshall and Vernon Fiddler, as the ownership issue is still not solved.
- Jim Matheson of the Edmonton Journal: Matheson thinks the Sharks should trade Devin Setoguchi for a puck moving defenseman. Senators GM Bryan Murray says he’s called 14 or 15 teams about possible trades, response was always ‘No, not really.’
- Sam Carchidi of the Philadelphia Inquirer: If the Flyers sign Ville Leino, “the Flyers near or above the cap – and that’s for just 19 players on their 22- or 23-player roster for 2011-12.” The Flyers may have to trade one of their high-priced defensemen. Leino, “I like being here; it’s a good fit and I play with good players, so hopefully we get something done.”
- Dan Murphy via twitter: Canucks coach Alain Vigneault says that Keith Ballard is behind in his conditioning due to his off-season surgery and concussion. Could be in the lineup for the Canucks against Pittsburgh.
- Adrian Dater of the Denver Post: Avalanche goalie Craig Anderson faced shots today for the first time since injuring his knee 3 weeks ago.
- Chris Johnston via twitter: JS Giguere will start in net for the Leafs tomorrow night against the Predators.
NHL Playoff Injury Updates: April 19th

- Jim Gintonio of the Arizona Republic: In last night’s 4-2 victory over the Red Wings, the Coyotes lost team captain Shane Doan in the 2nd after he crashed into the boards. He’ll be re-evaluated today, and is listed as day-to-day. The Coyotes were also without Vern Fiddler who was scratched with an upper-body injury. Fiddler plans on practicing today and hopes to be in the lineup on Tuesday.
- David Pollak of the San Jose Mercury News: As if the Sharks didn’t need any other pressures in the playoffs (constant playoff choking being most severe), they had to play last night without Dany Heatley. Heatley was a last-minute scratch with an undisclosed injury. He’s listed as day-to-day, and it’s unknown at this time if he’ll be a go for game 4. **What a heart breaking loss for them last night.
- Mike Harrington of the Buffalo News: On Saturday night, Sabres forward Thomas Vanek crashed into the boards and hobbled off the ice. News coming out of Buffalo is that he’s doubtful for tonight’s game 3, but there is hope that he might be able to return this series. Nothing is broken, and the ‘lower-body injury’ is thought be a severely sprained left ankle. If it is severely sprained, I’d be surprised if he’s ready to go in a couple games.
