Monday morning notes on the Maple Leafs, Flyers, Jets, Coyotes, Canadiens, Devils, Isles, Oilers and Kings

  • Kevin McGran of the Toronto Star: The Maple Leafs sent goalie Ben Scrivens to the AHL yesterday, with more cuts expected today. Matt Frattin will likely skate with Mikhail Grabovski and Nikolai Kulemin in Thursday’s opener, that’s if Grabovski is healthy enough to go. Coach Ron Wilson thinks that Grabovski will be able to go, and is hoping that Tyler Bozak and Tim Connolly can play as well. Ron Wilson has joined twitter and is following Kyle Turris. His first tweet: “Need hybrid icing rule change! Have seen too many horrific injuries!”
  • Sam Carchidi of the Philadelphia Inquirer: Teams have until Wednesday at 3 PM to submit their rosters to the NHL. The Flyers will likely only be keeping 2 of Brayden Schenn, Sean Couturier and Matt Read. Couturier could get a 10 audition with the club before they have to make a final decision on him.
  • Ed Tait of the Winnipeg Free Press: The Jets have released forward Janne Pesonen, and sent Paul Postma and Jason Gregoire to the AHL. Contract talks between the Jets and Mark Scheifele are progressing.
  • Pat Hickey of the Montreal Gazette: The Canadiens will get an update today on defenseman Chris Campoli. Campoli took a blow to the head on Saturday from Lightning forward Ryan Malone.
  • Chris Botta of the NY Times: Petr Sykora should find out this afternoon if he’ll receive a contract from the Devils or if he’s released by the team.
  • Jeff Marek via twitter: The Islanders assigned 17 players to Bridgeport of the AHL. 1st round pick Ryan Strome is with the team. BD Galiof via twitter: With the Islanders signing Steve Staois, it allows Calvin de Hann to continue his development in the AHL. He’s likely to get a callup when injuries arise.
  • Jim Matheson of the Edmonton Journal: The Oilers need a puck moving defenseman, and Maple Leafs Carl Gunnarsson’s name keeps popping up. Could the Oilers be interested in Bryan McCabe? The Oilers could be without defenseman  Ryan Whitney (ankle), Ladislav Smid (shoulder) and Taylor Chorney (knee) for the opener. Smid possibly has a dislocated or separated shoulder. Same Gagner will start the season on the IR with an high ankle sprain. The Oilers have 27 guys in camp after assigning Teemu Harikainen to the AHL, and putting Ryan O’Marra, Ryan Keller, Josh Green and Gilbert Brule on waivers. Matheson wonders if Linus Omark is the team’s 3rd line RWers, or if they are taking calls for him. Omark has 5 pre-season points.

NHL Trade talks beginning … Leafs get offer … Could the Flyers trade Carter? Bruins up for trading Leafs pick? Yandle not going anywhere?

  • David Pagnotta via twitter: Teams like the Maple Leafs, Coyotes, Senators, Bruins, Ducks and Kings are starting to make trade calls but nothing is imminent.
  • Bob McKenzie via twitter: Noted for the 10,000 time, Brian Burke won’t ask Tomas Kaberle to waive his no trade clause.
  • Bob McKenzie via twitter: The Maple Leafs received a trade offer, it was a 2 for 2 deal involving bottom 6 forwards, with one of the players they would move being a Toronto Marlie. McKenzie also added the deal wasn’t ‘laughable’, realistic goal is to upgrade bottom 6 because the options aren’t there to upgrade the top 6.
  • Sam Carchidi of the Philadelphia Inquirer: The Philadelphia Flyers are deep at center with Jeff Carter, Mike Richards, Daniel Briere, and have winger Claude Giroux who was a center. If things don’t improve with the Flyers, they may look at trading Carter, who’ll be a RFA at season end. They could use a top end winger.
  • Joe Haggerty of CSNNE: It was brought up yesterday that the Bruins are interested in Keith Yandle, and could be interested in prospects Mikkel Boedker and Viktor Tikhonov. The Bruins need to move out salary, and the Coyotes have around $9 million in cap space. The names at the top of Boston trade options are Blake Wheeler and Michael Ryder, with Matt Hunwick and Mark Stuart also as possibilities. It wouldn’t surprise Haggerty if the 1st round pick they acquired from the Maple Leafs is also in play. Tim Thomas’s solid start may increase his trade value.
  • Jim Gintonio of the Arizona Republic: “Another day, a couple more mindless, idiotic Twitter rumors.” Gintonio says that Keith Yandle is not going anywhere. “Probably 90 percent of the teams in the NHL are interested in Yandle; just as the Coyotes and 29 other teams are “interested” in Drew Doughty or Duncan Keith or Mike Green.”
  • David Pollak of the San Jose Mercury News: San Jose Sharks coach, Todd McLellan has no plan on how he’ll be using his goalie, Antti Niemi and Antero Niittymaki. Niitymaki may have the leg up. “Right now, it’s who we feel comfortable with on that given day,” McLellan said Tuesday. “Nitty, let’s face facts, has been better than Antti has, so we lean that way a little right now.”

Souray hurts hand in AHL scrap … Bruins interested in Yandle, others … New Jersey Devils notes … plus lots of other updates

  • Ryan Rishaug via twitter: Sheldon Souray will be out for 2 weeks after hurting his hand in a fight. Video at bottom of post, about 40 seconds in..
  • Adrian Dater via twitter: Dater thinks the Colorado Avalanche could be a possible trade partner for the Boston Bruins as they could use some help on defense and have the lowest payroll. Joe Haggerty thinks the Bruins could be interested in Phoenix Coyotes prospects such as Mikkel Boedker and Viktor Tikhonov. The Bruins also like some Coyotes roster players, such as Keith Yandle. Source just told Jimmy Murphy that Yandle is available, and the Bruins are interested.
  • Bob McKenzie via twitter: Ilya Kovalchuk prefers to play left wing, and may have “chuffed” at playing on the right side.
  • Tom Gulitti of the Bergon Record: Anton Volchenkov has skated the last couple days. Volchenkov could join the team for tomorrow’s game, he was originally set to return on Nov. 5th. Brian Rolston has begun light skating after his sports hernia surgery. Bryce Salvador is not cleared for exercising yet. Mark Fraser is also not allowed to exercise yet.
  • Andrew Gross via twitter: Marian Gaborik’s injured left shoulder is progressing, no timetable is set, hopes to start skating next week.
  • Chris Vivlamore via twitter: The Atlanta Thrashers will be without Bogosian and Meyer against the Rangers, will need to recall someone.
  • Katie Carrera via twitter: Capitals defenseman Tom Poti won’t travel with the team to Carolina, could join the team later this week.

Tikhonov, did he or didn’t he request trade … Blues call Sweatt … Likely rule changes could be ….

Dmitry Chesnokov via twitter: Phoenix Coyotes forward Viktor Tikhonov has requested a trade according to his father, and 15 teams are interested.

Scott Burnside via twitter: Coyotes GM Don Malony says there is no truth to Tikhonov requesting a trade.

Andy Strickland via twitter: St. Louis Blues GM Doug Armstrong spoke with Bill Sweatt in effort to bring the free agent forward to St. Louis.

The Hockey News via twitter: An NHL executive said the rule changes that are the likeliest to be approved are: 1. Modified icing 2. Shallower nets 3. 3-3 OT and 4. No line change on offsides.

Lyle ‘Spector’ Richardson of FoxSports: The length of contracts wanted by teams and remaining restricted free agents is making it harder for them to come to terms. Bobby Ryan is looking for 3 years, Ducks want 5. The Stars are offering 2 years to James Neal, he’d like a longer deal (and probably more money than the $2.5 a season they were offering). Carey Price is after 2 years, the Canadiens offered 5.
