More on the Front-Loaded contract investigation … Sharks offering Clowe and 1st for Kaberle? Phillips and Sens talking extension

  • Dmitry Chesnokov via twitter: Kovalchuk’s agent hasn’t discussed the KHL with him. SKA wants Kovalchuk to let them know what he wants. His Russian agent has said that SKA has 1 to 8 year offers, and an “up to you” offer where Kovalchuk picks the terms.
  • Tim Panaccio via twitter: Chris Pronger won’t be ready for training camp, and may be ready for the season opener, his knee has atrophy.
  • Jason Botchford of the Vancouver Province: The NHL has been investigating Roberto Luongo’s contract for a year, they only “conditionally” approved it. The League wasn’t happy with the Canucks and they would checking in to see if the Canucks were attempting to circumvent the salary cap. The investigation has no timelines, and is on-going. The Canucks were told to take the last 2 years off the contract, making it a 10-year, $64 million deal. That would make the new salary cap number $6.4 million instead of $5.3 million. If they did that, the Leauge would give the deal their blessing. The NHL wanted all emails, paperwork, voice mails, etc. and interviewed GM Gillis and their cap expert. It’s believed that Pronger and Hossa had the same investigation, the players have not cooperated. Nothing may happen to the Luongo contract, as they’ve finished the investigative work and nothing has been done. Also, Luongo’s deal never pays less that $1 million.
  • Tim Panaccio of CSNPhilly: Chris Pronger’s 7 year, $34.45 million contract will continue to be investigated despite going into effect July 1st. Bill Daly wrote, “No timetable and no deadline. Yes, the contract can be de-registered in the event a circumvention is found. Nothing is different than before [Ilya] Kovalchuk ruling.” Peter Luukko, the Flyers president, stands behind the deal, and thinks it doesn’t hold relevance to Kovalchuk’s contract.
  • Damian Cristodero of the St. Petersberg Times: Bill Daly says the NHL doesn’t have any problems with Vincent Lecavalier’s 11 year contract, that pays him an average of $7.727. It is front loaded, but not to the extent of some of the others, and only takes him to the age of 39.
  • NHL Sources Say via twitter: Teams interested in Kaberle are the Bruins, Stars, Kings, Devils, Sharks and Lightning. Sharks offering Clowe and 1st round pick, Burke not interested in draft picks. (The 27-year old Clowe has a cap hit of $3.625 million for the next 3 years. If this offer for Kaberle is true, it might be one that Burke has to consider).
  • Nicholas Cotsonika of Yahoo! Sports: “The deadline is Sunday, and I don’t expect to see anyone’s best cards until probably Friday,” Burke said. “That being said, the offers improved dramatically over the weekend. We’re at a double-digit number of teams that are in. Unilaterally, without any phone calls from us, two teams dramatically improved their offer over the weekend. It’s going the way I thought it would go.”
  • Jim Gintonio via twitter: The Phoenix Coyotes continue to negotiate with both Lee Stempniak and Martin Hanzel, though nothing is iminant with either.
  • Dmitry Chesnokov via twitter: Vladimir Tarasenko, a St. Louis Blues 2010 1st round pick (16th overall), is close to signing a deal with Sibir of the KHL. Chesnokov has said in the past that he would be staying in Russia for at least another year, despite other reports.
  • RDS: Reporting that Eric Belanger has signed a 1 year deal with someone, but can’t disclose who just yet. Yesterday there were reports that it could be the Maple Leafs, but other said that was not the case. James Mirtle via twitter says Belanger is not signing with the Leafs. NHLSourcesSay via twitter: Deal not being announced as the team is preparing a trade that impacts the salary cap.

Frolov getting interest from Rangers and Kings … Other Russian FA’s … Tampa Bay Lightning talk

  • Dmitry Chesnokov via twitter: Frolov’s agent has said the Rangers are very interested, and the LA Kings have shown interest in the last couple days.
  • Dmitry Chesnokov via twitter: SKA of the KHL are interested in Alexander Frolov, Maxim Afinogenov, Denis Grebeskov and Ilya Kovalchuk according KHL President Medvedev (who owns the team).
  • The Hockey News video: Ryan Dixon, Ryan Kennedy, and Adam Proteau talk about the Tampa Bay Lightning. How Yzerman will fill out the roster, Victor Hedman’s development, Vinny Lecavalier, and Brett Connolly.

Kulemin-Maple Leaf talks at a standstill … Zherdev wanting to return to NHL … Capitals looking for a #2 center

  • Lance Hornby of the Toronto Sun: Talks between the Toronto Maple Leafs and winger Nikolai Kulemin are at a standstill. It is rumored that Kulemin is after a $3 million a year contract, after putting up 36 points in 78 games. According to Brian Burke, “What he is asking for is not what we are prepared to pay”. I think $3 million is little much, but the threat of bolting to the KHL may increase his price. Kulemin started the year off slow, but his game, offensively and defensively, improved greatly as the season went along.
  • Jimmy Murphy via Twitter: A source told Murphy that Vincent Lecavalier would consider waiving his no movement clause for Boston, but he isn’t expecting to be dealt. I seen no reason why the Bruins would be interested in him with Savard, Bergeron, Krejci down the middle and his crazy contract.
  • Corey Masisak of CSNWashington: The Washington Capitals will be looking to add a #2 center and a top 4 defenseman this off-season. Masisak puts together a list of players who would fit the #2 center roll: Patrick Marleau, Saku Koivu, Matt Cullen, Tomas Plekanec, Matthew Lombardi, Eric Belanger, Brendan Morrison, and Vinny Prospal.
  • Sam Carchidi of the Philadelphia Inquirer: Moving up the off-season priority list for the Philadelphia Flyers is re-signing goalie Michael Leighton. The 29-year old waiver pickup will be unrestricted free agent at seasons end. After coming over from Carolina, Leighton put up a 16-5-2 record with a 2.48 GAA. So far in the playoffs he has a 5-1 record with a 1.37 GAA, .951 SV% and 3 shutouts.
  • David Pollak of the San Jose Sharks: One goalies name who’s been left out of most discussions when it comes to the San Jose Sharks, is Swedish netminder Henrik Karlsson. The 26-year old, 6 foot 6 goalie posted a 2.45 GAA in 34 games with a .914 SV% with Farjestad.  Both sides are looking to extend his contract, though he might not be NHL ready yet.

Vinny on the Block this Off-season … Rynnas Meets with Stars … Leafs/Flyers in on Scrivens

  • Jim Kelly of Sports Illustrated: Kelly thinks the Lightning should dump Vincent Lecavalier as soon as they can. Lecavalier’s cap hit is $7.7 million a season. Though it will be tough to move a contract like that, the Canadiens, Maple Leafs, and Rangers are teams that could probably make it work somehow. But what would the Lightning want in return for big Vinny?
  • Mike Heika of the Dallas Morning News: Jussi Rynnas was wined and dined by the Dallas Stars Thursday. He has other visits scheduled. Rynnas has said he’s open to playing in the minors if he can’t win a starting or backup position. The Stars think Rynnas will make a decision within 3 weeks.
  • Darren Dreger via Twitter: The Maple Leafs and Flyers are among the teams that are interested in Cornell goalie, Ben Scrivens.
  • Tracee Hamilton of the Washington Post: Capitals coach Bruce Boudreau has had to juggle his goaltenders, Theodore and Varlamov, for the last year or so. Boudreau has shown in the past that if one goalie struggles, he doesn’t hesitate to pull him and insert the other. So in the playoffs, it wouldn’t be surprising if both goalies got a shot, unless one steals the show.
  • Frank Seravalli of the Philadelphia Daily News: The Flyers have searched the planet, put all names in a hat, and have pulled out Sebastien Caron. Caron was playing in the Swiss league, and was the 7th goalie to dress for Flyers, as he was the backup last night. Caron will make $25,906 for the remaining 10 days on the NHL schedule.

Rangers Still like Souray … Lecavalier staying a good idea … Jackets are Sellers

  • Larry Brooks of the NY Post: How will Sather turn the $1.15 million in cap space into a meaningful return for the Rangers? Could they get a 1st round pick for Vinny Prospal and/or Olli Jokinen? The Rangers have also been keeping their eye on Oilers Dman, Sheldon Souray and his $5.4 million cap hit. The Rangers would have to move Michal Rozsival or Wade Redden, and convince Souray to waive his no-trade clause.
  • Gary Shelton of the St. Petersburg Times: With Jeffrey Vinik on the verge of purchasing the Lightning, there have already been rumors that he’d like to shed Vincent Lecavalier’s huge contract. But that might not be a smart thing to do according to Shelton. “I don’t think anything will happen short term. Trying to trade a player as popular as Lecavalier would be a lousy way for any new owner to say hello. To a lot of fans, that would sound more like goodbye”
  • Aaron Portzline of the Columbus Dispatch: It looks like the Blue Jackets will be sellers at the trade deadline. The Jackets are 9 points out of the last playoff spot.

“It’s a gray area, but we’re probably leaning more toward being sellers,” Howson said. “Nothing is final yet.

“It is difficult for all of us, yes, because we didn’t expect to be in this situation. But that’s the reality. You have to make the most of it.”

  • Robert Tychkowski of the Edmonton Sun: Ethan Moreau realizes he may have played his last game in an Oilers uniform.

“Change is sometimes good,” he said. “But I can’t stress enough that it’s not up to me. I’ll have to sit and wait like everybody else.

“If I’m here I’ll continue to do the same things I’ve always done. I’ll work as hard as I can for this organization. If I’m not, hopefully there’s an opportunity for me somewhere else.

“I’m impartial at this point. I don’t know what their plans are. I haven’t had a conversation with anybody who makes those decisions.

“Nothing is for certain in this game, I could be an Oiler when I get back.”

  • Ken Warren the Ottawa Citizen: The Senators are not done shopping, they’d like to add another defenseman. According to Murray, “I’ve talked to some teams already (Friday) about other getting another defenceman, but (other teams) will be shopping, too. Everybody gets the best price they can. Those are the things that happen when it snowballs.”

Souray out with Broken Hand, More moves coming for Leafs? Kesler-Canucks talks on hold

  • Joanne Ireland of the Edmonton Journal: Throwing a wrench in to the Edmonton Oilers and Sheldon Souray trade plans, is Souray’s broken hand that he suffered fighting Jarome Iginla on Saturday. How long he’ll be out is still unknown, but he’s not expected back before the NHL trade deadline day on March 3rd.
  • Mike Zeisberger of the Toronto Sun: Brian Burke may not be finished dealing. There’s still a good chance that Alexei Ponikarovsky, Lee Stempniak, and Garnet Exelby will be traded.
  • Darren Dreger of TSN: “It’s not a question of ‘if’, it’s a question of ‘when’”. Dreger is referring to the trading of Tomas Kaberle. Burke continues to say he won’t ask Kaberle to waive his no-trade clause, but yesterday’s trades may send Kaberle up to Burke’s office saying he’s ready to go. The Leafs will be probably looking to get a top-3 or top-6 forward and a 1st round draft pick. To get the top 3 or top 6 forward they want, I don’t think they will be able to pull off that type of deal until after the season. I don’t think teams that think they have a shot this year, would want to trade a top forward during their run.
  • Erik Erlendsson of the Tampa Tribune: Tampa GM Brian Lawton is rejecting reports that if Jeffrey Vinik buys the team, that Vincent Lecavalier will be traded.
  • Jason Botchford of the Vancouver Province: Contract negotiations between the Vancouver Canucks and Ryan Kesler have been put on hold until after the season. They have reached an impasse and don’t want it to become an in-season distraction. They are roughly a $1 million apart, Kesler’s camp feel he’s worth $5 million, the Canucks think it’s closer to $4 million.
  • Jim Matheson of the Edmonton Journal:
    • Teams looking for help on the blueline may come calling for Mathieu Schneider, and to a lesser extent, Chris Chelios.
    • The Penguins need someone to play along side Sidney Crosby or Evgeni Malkin, but they also need some defensive help. They could use a player like Barret Jackman but he’s probably not available.
    • 38 year old and recent healthy scratch, Slava Kozlov, will most likely be made available by the Atlanta Thrashers.
    • Matheson thinks that the Penguins will eventually trade Malkin, making Crosby and Staal their 1-2 centers. For Malkin he thinks they could get a front line winger, top defenseman, forward prospect, and a 1st and 2nd round pick.
  • Helene St. James of the Detroit Free Press: The Detroit Red Wings will get Johan Franzen back next week after being out since the 3rd game of the season. Feb. 9th against the St. Louis Blues is the target date. GM Ken Holland will have to make a move or two to get under the salary cap.
  • AP on Arizona Republic: Phoenix Coyotes forward Scottie Upshall will be out indefinitely with a torn ACL, and will have to undergo surgery. This is a big blow to the Coyotes, as he was leading the Coyotes in goals this season with 18.
  • Adrian Dater of the Denver Post: John-Michael Liles was a healthy scratch for the 3rd time this season, and it has been no secret that he’s available for trade. The problem is his salary cap number is $4.1 million, and he has 2 years left on his contract after this year.

Kings interested in Lecavalier? Phaneuf to Atlanta or Philly? Messier the Rangers GM next season?

    • Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun:
      • Talk that Dion Phaneuf was offered in a package for Ilya Kovalchuk. The Flyers are also said to be interested in Phaneuf but they have cap issues and would have to send money back to the Flames or they would have to find someone else to take on a big salary player.
      • Sean O’Donnell of the LA Kings could become available, and the Blackhawks have interest if they move Cam Barker.
      • Could be the last season for Glen Sather as the GM of the Rangers. It still amazes me that he hasn’t been fired yet after years of making bad decisions. Mark Messier could take over as GM.
      • The Oilers are finding it difficult to find a taker for Sheldon Souray and his $5.4 million cap hit. It won’t help that he hurt his wrist/hand in a fight with Jarome Iginla last night.
      • The Canucks and Panthers could be looking at Hurricanes center Matt Cullen.
    • Ken Campbell of The Hockey News: The LA Kings may be interested in Vinny Lecavalier, and they continue to be interested in Kovalchuk, but won’t bring in both. The Lightning reportedly asked for Jack Johnson, Wayne Simmonds, a prospect, and several draft picks. Atlanta asked for something similar for Kovalchuk.
    • JP Hoornstra of the LA Daily News: The Ducks have locked up Jonas Hiller for 4 years and $18 million. He’ll get $4.5 million a season. The Ducks will continue to shop JS Giguere in hope that they can shed his $7 million price tag for next season.
    • Joe Haggerty of CSNNE.com: Aaron Ward’s days in Carolina could be coming to end. Boston is one team that could be interested in bringing him in.

Globe Sports talks some rumors on their Podcast, Lightning getting new owner that might want to move Vinny, Plenty of teams interested in Whitney

    • Globe Sports Podcast: A 1/2 hour podcast talking about the ‘Hockey Summit’ and the NHL’s participation in the Olympics. They also talk about Dion Phaneuf, Ilya Kovalchuk, and other things happening on the trade front. Trade talk starts around the 10 minute mark.
    • Ken Campbell and Adam Proteau of The Hockey News: The Tampa Bay Lightning ownership was been a mess for awhile, and there have been reports that the NHL covered their last payroll. But some better news may be on the way, as the NHL might have found a new owner in Boston based financier, Jeffery Vinik. The team, and 5 acres of land beside the arena are being sold for an estimated $170 million. It is also rumored that if Vinik gets the team he’ll want to trim payroll, and will be asking Vincent Lecavalier to waive his no-trade clause.
    • TSN.ca: The Penguins or Senators could be a great fit for Ray Whitney. Other clubs that might be interested are Buffalo, Boston, New Jersey, Vancouver and Los Angeles.
    • Mike Heika of the Dallas Morning News: Mike Modano was asked on a recent road trip if he’d consider moving to a Stanley Cup contender in what could be his last season,  he said he’d prefer to finish his career with the Stars.
    • Steve Buffery of the Toronto Sun: Maple Leafs GM Brian Burke is fine with Jamal Mayers and Garnet Exelby asking for trade. They approached him privately and in a professional manner.
    • David Pollak of the San Jose Mercury News: Dan Boyle missed his 3rd straight game with an upper-body injury, and is day-to-day. He’ll see how it feels before Saturday’s game, and if it’s a no go, he’ll try again on Tuesday.
    • Michael Russo of the Minneapolis Star-Tribune: Minnesota Wild goalie Niklas Backstrom is day-to-day with a stiff back. He missed last nights game, and will be re-evaluated before their next game.

Garrioch and LeBrun have some NHL Trade Rumors for you

    • Hockey Night in Canada ‘Hotstove’ video
    • Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun:
      • The Canucks might be one of several teams to have an interest in Paul Kariya.
      • The Thrashers will take another run at re-signing Ilya Kovalchuk. The Flames are said to have inquired about him. This will come down to the deadline, with at least 6 teams involved; Flames Capitals, Blackhawks, Bruins, Kings and Rangers.
      • The Leafs have inquired about Kovalchuk, but that may not mean much.  “Burke likes to stick his nose into everything,” said one Eastern Conference-based player. “If he did that, it’s so he can tell everybody that he looked into the possibility.”
      • Unless he takes less than the $6.3 million he making this season, Patrick Marleau may not be back with the Sharks next year, and the Kings might be interested.
      • The Lightning have once again shot down rumors that they’ve talked to the Rangers about Vinny Lecavalier.
    • Pierre LeBrun of ESPN:
      • Tampa Bay owner, Oren Koules, is shooting down the Lecavalier to the Rangers rumors. Of note, Vinny is 15 in scoring before Saturday’s play.
      • The Maple Leafs have let it be known that not only will they trade players for picks/prospects, they’ll also take on contracts for picks/prospects.
      • Hurricanes Dman, Joni Pitkanen, is drawing a lot interest even though he still has another year on his contract at $4.5 million.
      • The Coyotes are looking to add some scoring, without taking on much salary.
      • The Islanders will move Martin Biron for a draft pick, defenseman or a left winger
    • Eric Francis from Canoe Slam! Sports:  Flames GM Darryl Sutter said that he has “no intentions of breaking any of it up.” He has been unhappy with the play of the team, and many of their top players aren’t playing like top players. Sutter will be patient with the team for now.

Lecavalier rumors shot down, Auld the starter in Dallas? No moves for the Wings?

    • Larry Brooks of the NY Post: Brooks doesn’t think the Rangers should deal for Vincent Lecavalier, even if if means getting rid of Wade “Golden Gloves” Redden. “It won’t work, because it’s impossible to build contenders through the addition of cap-choking veterans. It won’t work because Lecavalier isn’t 27 and at the top of his game anymore.”
    • Erik Erlendsson of the Tampa Tribune: Lightning GM, Brian Lawton, shot down rumors that they have been talking to the Rangers about shipping Vinny Lecavalier to the big apple. “It’s complete B.S. and nobody ever calls me or even asks me,” Lawton said. “I haven’t talked to Glen Sather in weeks, so that is completely false that he contacted me to inquire about that. It absolutely did not happen.”
    • Elliotte Freidman of CBCSports: “Asked one scout about Carey Price and Jaroslav Halak. He said, “If Halak were made available, there would be 10 teams interested. If Price were made available, there would be 29 teams interested.””
    • Mike Heika of the Dallas Morning News: The Dallas Stars are giving goalie Alex Auld a little more opportunity to earn the starting job in Dallas, increasing the signals that Marty Turco could be on his way out.
    • Ansar Khan of MLive: Despite all their injuries this season, the Detroit Red Wings have hung in there, but it’s still unlikely they will make any significant deals at the deadline. They will be really close to the cap limit and may not be able to take on additional salary. Before the deadline they will get some injured players back, Jason Williams, Tomas Holmstrom and Johan Franzen. It doesn’t appear that Andreas Lilja will return this season from his concussion.
    • Michael Arace of the Columbus Dispatch: Arace thinks it would be nice if the Blue Jackets could keep Raffi Torres, but most likely he’ll be moved. Milan Jurcina and Fredrik Modin are also in the last year of their contracts and could be moved. Modin has a no-trade clause.

Around the Boards: Lecavalier to Rangers? Flames interested in Armstrong, Tanguay?

  • Hockey Night in Canada ‘Hotstove’ video
  • Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun:
    • Vincent Lecavalier to the New York Rangers trade rumors are back. Rumored package; D Matt Gilroy, D Wade Redden and either C Brandon Dubinsky or RW Ryan Callahan. I bet Lightning fans would be excited about the unacheiving, over-paid Redden.
    • The Calgary Flames could be interested in winger Colby Armstrong if he becomes available.
    • Sergei Gonchar could become trade bait if he isn’t re-signed.
    • Whispers that Chicago is still considering a move for a goalie. Available goalies are Halak, Biron, Giguere, and maybe Roloson. Trade names out of Chicago to get under next years cap are Versteeg, Sharp, Barker and Huet.
    • The Capitals are the front runners for Kovalchuk.
    • The Senators, Rangers, Lightning, and Stars are interested in Sykora.
  • Pierre LeBrun of ESPN:
    • LeBrun believes the Rangers could have an interest in Sheldon Souray, but would need to get rid of the contracts of either Michal Rozsival or Wade Redden. I don’t see it as an easy feet to get rid of either one of those contracts, plus Souray has a no-trade clause and his family is out in LA, so he might not even want to go there.
    • The Penguins are close to re-signing Kris Letang or Sergei Gonchar.
    • The Predators will only be re-signing one of their goalies for next year. My bet would be on Rinne.
    • Senators GM, Bryan Murray, is hoping to hold contract talks this week with Dman Anton Volcheckov.
    • Marty Turco could be on the move at the trade deadline. The Dallas Stars have talked to Montreal about Jaroslav Halak as their goalie of the future
  • Steve Simmons of the Toronto Sun: Tomas Kaberle is handcuffing the Leafs in a way, they can’t seem to get better with him, and can’t seem to trade him. Regardless if Brian Burke says he isn’t asking Tomas Kaberle to waive his no-trade clause, and Kaberle saying he doesn’t want to go anywhere, the talk of Kaberle being traded won’t end.
  • Scott Cruickshank of the Calgary Herald: Cruickshank brings up the possibility of the Flames bringing back Alex Tanguay, though it most likely won’t happen.

Around the Boards: Ilya-Thrashers have a Snag, Vinny to Oilers? Help on the way for the Wings and Sens

    • Chris Vivlamore of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution: Talks between Ilya Kovalchuk and the Thrashers have apparently hit a snag. “Our position is different than his position right now,” Waddell told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution before Monday night’s game with Montreal.

“Their position is fixed years with money and we have a different side of that.”That’s what we have to work through. We’ve gotten through every thing else, now we have to make it through that.”

    • David Staples of the Edmonton Journal: It is not a true rumor, but he mentions, “Rather than dismantle the Oilers, isn’t it more likely they would place some new bet on some new aging hockey ace, such as Vincent Lecavalier? I can see a Tom Gilbert, Andrew Cogliano, Fernando Pisani and Jordan Eberle for Lecavalier trade right now.
    • Helene St. James of the Detroit Free Press: Finally some good news heading the Red Wings way, Valtteri Filppula is nearing a return. Shortly after Christmas, Filppula should be back.
    • Damian Cristodero of the St. Petersberg Times: The Lightning have been shopping defenseman Lukas Krajicek without any takers so far. Krajicek was sent to the minors, but won’t be put through re-entry waivers.
    • Rachel Blount of the Minneapolis Star Tribune: Minnesota Wild’s winger, Petr Sykora, is still recovering from a concussion, but nearing a return. He’s been skating on his own since last week, and missed his 20th game last night.
    • Helene Elliott of the LA Times: Ryan Smyth returned to the Kings practice yesterday. He’s missed the last 15 games with a rib injury, and could return to the line on Saturday.
    • Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun: Senators goalie, Pascal Leclaire, is ready to return tomorrow after missing several weeks after taking a puck in the face. Brian Elliott will go back to being the backup.

Around the Boards: NHL Rumors from Garrioch and LeBrun

    • Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun:
      • Teams that might be interested in Kovalchuk if he becomes available: Kings, Bruins, Capitals, Rangers, Avs and Devils. Talks between his agent and Waddell were yesterday, with more scheduled.
      • Vincent Lecavalier might be moved by the trade deadline. That’s if someone will take his huge contract.
      • The Flyers are believed to be shopping Jeff Carter. Garrioch isn’t the 1st to mention this, but I just don’t see it happening. Unless he gets another young star or two in return, but even then, it doesn’t seem to make much sense.
      • The 39 year old Teemu Selanne could be moved closer to the deadline if he choose to go elsewhere.
      • Joffrey Lupul, his wonky back (out 6-8), and a $4.25 cap hit are available.
      • Edmonton is trying to shake up their roster, offering the $5 million plus contracts of Sheldon Souray, Lubomir Visnovsky and Shawn Horcoff.
      • Trade deadline time will most likely see Lee Stempniak’s and Matt Stajan’s as part of the Leafs list of who could be available.
    • Hockey Night In Canada Hotstove Video
    • Pierre LeBrun of ESPN:
      • Contract talks between Marty Turco and the Dallas Stars probably won’t happen until after the season. If they are out of the playoff race at the deadline, there is a good chance he’ll be moved.
      • Trades are becoming really hard to facilitate. ”My phone has actually been ringing more frequently lately,” said another GM on Saturday. “But it’s just so hard right now with nobody wanting to take on salary.”
      • David Booth’s recovery from a concussion has improved, he’s been on skates since Tuesday with no set backs. Mid-January would be his earlies return date.

Around the Boards: Lecavalier to LA? Kane Hurt? Some players returning soon

    • Jim Matheson of the Edmonton Journal: Thinks the Los Angeles Kings are the best suitor for Vincent Lecavalier. He’d be an excellent compliment to Anze Kopitar, they have the cap space, and plenty of young players.
    • Chris Kuc of the Chicago Tribune: Hawks coach Joel Quenneville thinks that Patrick Kane may not miss any time. Kane banged his head off of the ice in the first period, and did not return.
    • Corey Masisak of the Washington Times: Michael Nylander has had some trouble getting a team in the KHL (or anywhere else in Europe and the NHL) too him, now finds himself on his way to Grand Rapids Michigan. He’ll suit up for the AHL club, collecting his $5.5 million salary ($4.875 cap hit). The Capitals will continue to pay his salary, but the cap number will come off the books.
    • Michael Obernauer of the NY Daily News: Brandon Dubinsky could return to the New York Rangers lineup tonight versus Atlanta. Since scoring ability is something the Rangers have lacked since he got hurt.
    • Stephen Harris of the Boston Herald: Milan Lucic could return to ice this week. He’s been out 3 weeks so far with a high ankle sprain.
    • Frank Seravalli of the Philadelphia Daily News: After firing their coach, and going 2-10 in their last 12, and losing their #1 goalie, the Flyers are still in trouble. Rumors are starting to circulate that they are looking deal, but new coach, Peter laviolette doesn’t want that to happen yet.

Around the Boards: Players being shopped, coveted … Savard’s contact under investigation … Contract talks for some

    • Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun:
      • In their search for scoring, the New York Rangers have set their sites on an injured player, Pavol Demitra, once he gets healthy. Demitra is still recovering from his second shoulder surgery, and could return after Christmas. Demitra is a UFA at the end of the season and brings a $4 million cap for this season.
      • The League will be investigating Marc Savard’s 7 year extension, which isn’t much of a surprise after looking at his yearly salaries: $7 million, $7 million, $6 million, $5 million, $1.5 million, $525,000, $525,000.
      • The Oilers have Sheldon Souray’s name out there, and he was offered to an Eastern Conference team in a 4-player deal.
      • The Florida Panthers have been contact teams in an attempt to make a deal to improve their club, they need to make the playoffs this year.
      • The Nashville Predators will look to locking up goaltender Pekka Rinne, but might have trade defenceman Dan Hamhuis at the deadline as the Predators might not be able to afford him.
      • Aaron Ward of the Hurricanes has drawn interest from the Sharks, Senators and Blue Jackets. Teams are also calling about Ray Whitney, but Rutherford will give Whitney the choice as to where he’d like to go (if that team is interested).
      • Vancouver Canucks defenceman, Shane O’Brien, is also being shopped around the league.
    • Pierre LeBrun of ESPN:
      • Pittsburgh has done well in locking up many of their core players, but they could have some trouble this off-season with UFA Sergei Gonchar and RFA Kris Letang. The Pens think they might be able to bring both back, but it would have to be at a really friendly price, which might not happen for Gonchar. KHL teams might throw a large amount of money for the 35 year old.
      • Contract talks between potential RFA Nicklas Backstrom and the Washington Capitals have gone well, and could be close to finalizing it. Talks with Alexander Semin have gone well, with the sides not talking since the start of the season. Semin is another player that will be in KHL rumors.
      • Vincent Lecavalier’s future in Tampa could be up in the air. He has a yearly cap hit of $7.7 million (receiving $10 million season for the next 7 years), which will be extremely hard to move. 3 teams that LeBrun mentions that might have an interest are the Rangers, Kings and Canadiens.
      • The Flyers and goalie Ray Emery can talk contract extension after January 1st, and there’s a chance that might happen.

Around the Boards: Ovechkin, Staal, MacDonald and Lecavalier Updates

Injuries are the story of the day again, with 2 super stars leaving their games early. It was mentioned on either Friday or Saturday’s Maple Leaf game, that there were 100 players out with injuries. It’s simply amazing the amount of injuries with season.

    • Corey Masisak of the Washington Times: Alex Ovechkin is the latest star to go down with an injury, after leaving last nights game in the second period. Boudreau said after the game that Ovechkin is day-to-day with a ‘upper body injury’.
    • Chip Alexander of the Raleigh News & Observer: Eric Staal left in the second periods of last nights Hurricanes game with an ‘upper body injury’. The injury is not supposed to be serious.
    • Dan O’Neill of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch: Andy MacDonald is day-to-day with his ‘upper body injury’, which could have been a lot worse after his face first slide into the boards Saturday night. If he didn’t move his head at the last minute to absorb the boards with the face and neck, he could have had a serious spinal injury. It was definitely a scary sight. For those who missed it,
    • Joe Smith of the St. Petersburg Times: Vincent Lecavalier has once again found himself with new wingers as coach Tocchet searches for a way to get his star center going. Vinny will most likely be centering Drew Miller and Stephane Veilleux.

Tanguay Signs With Tampa Bay Lightning

“Tampa Bay Lightning general manager Brian Lawton confirmed Saturday that the team has agreed to terms on a deal with free agent forward Alex Tanguay, pending a physical.

Assuming Tanguay shows no health related issues – he missed 30 games last season with a shoulder injury – the one-year deal could be official on Tuesday. Financial terms of the contract were not available, although it is believed to be in the $2.5 million range.”(Source-The Tampa Tribune)

Speculation is that Tanguay will bolster the top 2 lines, seeing time playing with Lightning captain Vinny Lecavalier and  Steven Stamkos. Tanguay is a natural play maker and could have a huge season in Tampa Bay.

Lecavalier to Habs talk reaching fever pitch

The potential for this trade is so exciting in Montreal that the anticipation is palpable. The fans of the Canadiens are staunch supporters of players of  French-Canadian decent and next to Vincent Lecavalier all others pale in comparison. The talk is heating up and according to sources (Bruce Garrioch, Sun Media) it’s reaching a fever pitch.

It’s not entirely clear what the Lightning would seek in return but at this point the Habs would be hard pressed not to pay whatever the asking price. If you witnessed the applause last night in Montreal for the Canadiens draft choice of French Canadian Louis Leblanc, you’ve seen the passion these people have for one of their own.

As for Lecavalier, this would be an opportunity to play in a market where you are loved if you perform. Considering he’s won the Stanley Cup in Tampa his abilities aren’t the question. The question is can he perform under the pressure of superstar expectations in the birthplace of the NHL.
