- Erik Erlendsson of the Tampa Tribune: Lightning forward Martin St. Louis will wear a visor when he returns. Last Thursday he struck by a Dominic Moore backhand during the pregame skate.
“I was scared, I was scared, like I felt — and I don’t know if it was anxiety or everything, I just felt very, very sick before I got to the hospital,” he said. “You have a lot going through your mind.”
“That night, at that point I knew that I had vision in the eye,” he said. “I didn’t know what kind of vision I had, but I could see light and movement, so I knew that it wasn’t as bad as I thought it was.”
St. Louis can’t do any physical activity until the blood subsides from his eye. There is no timetable. Coach Guy Boucher said on Monday that he doesn’t expect him back until after Christmas.
- Don Brennan of the Ottawa Sun: Senators forward Milan Michalek collided with defenseman Erik Karlsson in the 2nd period last night, and he didn’t return. The Senators are only saying “upper body” at the moment. He’ll be re-evaluated today.
- Andrew Gross of the Bergon Record: Rangers defenseman Marc Staal skated yesterday with teammates yesterday. He’s still out indefinitely, but a positive step in his recovery.
- Steve Conroyy of hte Boston Herald: Bruins defenseman Zdeno Chara missed last night’s game but is with the team on their road trip. They have 2 scheduled practice days before their game on Saturday against the Flyers.
- Jeremy Rutherford of the St. Louis Post Dispatch: Blues forward Vladimir Sobotka will be out for about 2 weeks after he took a shot off his left ankle. The Blues are also waiting on news from Matt D’Agostini who suffered a head injury on Saturday. He tested OK for a concussion after the game.

St. Louis Blues re-sign Polak and Sobotka

The St. Louis Blues have locked up defenseman Roman Polak and forward Vladimir Sobotka.
Polak re-signed for 5 years, $13.75 million. The deal carries a $2.75 million cap hit, and according to Andy Strickland the yearly breakdown is as follows: $2.2 million, $2.45 million, $3.1 million, $3.1 million, and $3.1 million.
Sobotka agreed to a 3 year deal worth $3.9 million. Strickland has the breakdown to be $1.2 million, $1.3 million and $1.4 million.

- Shelly Anderson of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette: Sidney Crosby is still being bothered by his hip flexor, he left practice early and did not play in last night’s game. It’s the 2nd time this camp that he’s been bothered by it, and was held out as a precaution. Crosby’s not concerned about it and hopes to play in their last pre-season game on Sunday.
- Michael Russo of the Star-Tribune: There is a report from CKAC that the Minnesota Wild are going to sign Jose Theodore to a 1-year, $1 million deal. As of last night, there have been discussion but there hasn’t been confirmation that the deal if done. Reports are that he’ll report to their AHL affiliate until the team returns from Finland. Harding will most likely be put on LTIR.
- Jason Botchford of the Vancouver Province: The Vancouver Canucks will discuss their final cuts today. They still need to trim about $3 million in cap space off the roster. “I’d by lying if I said the cap wouldn’t come in here to play a little bit,” Vigneault said. “We’ll assess the players tomorrow and come up with the best decisions for the benefit of out team.” Sami Salo and Alex Burrows could be put on LTIR to save some money. The Calgary Flames could be interested in Brendan Morrison, who’s still on a tryout with the Canucks.
- Mike Zeisberger of the Toronto Sun: Toronto Maple Leafs coach on Nazem Kadri, “I can’t see him being in the (Maple Leafs) lineup opening night.” Kadri said he’d take being sent to the Marlies like a man, “This is the NHL,” he said. “There is no room for crybabies.”
- James Murphy of ESPN Boston: The Boston Bruins are still searching for a puck moving defenseman. Matt Huntwick has the potential to fill that role but he’s struggled in camp.
- Darren Millard via twitter: Ales Kotalik and David Moss left Calgary’s game last night versus the Oilers with injuries. Vicki Hall via twitter: She can’t believe she’s saying this, but the Flames could be in trouble if Kotalik’s injury is serious. Centers Matt Stajan and Daymond Langkow are also out with injuries. Jason Botchford via twitter: Brendan Morrison to the Flames has made sense for awhile now.
- Jeremy Rutherford of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch: One line that has looked good for the St. Louis Blues and will start the season together; David Backes centering David Perron and Brad Boyes. The Blues have moved Backes back to center this year, but still talk that he may be moved back the right side. They like his size down the middle. Matt D’Agostini has taken advantage of Vladimir Sobotka’s injury and may start the season centering the 4th line.
- Rich Hammond of the LA Kings Insider: LA Kings winger Scott Parse still hasn’t skated since injuring his groin in the first pre-season game on Sept. 22nd. Brad Richardson has taken his spot on the 2nd line with Jarret Stoll and Justin Williams. Parse did some off-ice stuff yesterday and felt some tenderness. From Murray, “It’s inflammation only. That has been looked at, and checked out, by our team doctors. It’s a matter of that starting to calm down, with rest and medication and treatments.”
- Chris Kuc of the Chicago Tribune: Victor Stalberg is battling Jeremy Morin for one of the final spots on the Chicago Blackhawks roster. Their roster is at 26 players right now, and the team is deciding if they will go with a 21 or 22 man roster. Stalberg has more NHL experience, 40 games with the Leafs last year. He has 1 assist in 5 games so far this pre-season, compared to Morin’s goal and 2 assists.
No Market for Spezza? Volchenkov to Capitals? Harder for Bruins to trade Tim Thomas now

- Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun: Jason Spezza has 5 years and $35 million left his salary, and he has a no-movement clause that doesn’t kick in until July 1st. Many fans (44% of those polled by the Sun) would like to see him dealt away. The Sun contacted 5 teams to see if Spezza’s name was out there, but they hadn’t heard anything. “There’s no market for him,” said Sportsnet analyst Doug MacLean, a former GM of the Columbus Blue Jackets. “I think what you do is you hope that he improves. You’ve got (Milan) Michalek and you hope those two can develop some chemistry. You just have to plug around (Spezza).” If they could deal him, they probably wouldn’t get equal value back. Garrioch mentions 3 teams that could be interested in Spezza, Tampa Bay, Columbus, and Edmonton.
- Don Brennan of the QMI Agency, Toronto Star: Anton Volchenkov appears be getting ready to move on from Ottawa Senators, as he’s put his house up for sale. The Washington Capitals are reportedly getting ready to offer him somewhere in the $5 million a season range. The Senators would still like to re-sign him, but contract talks are going nowhere. Retaining Andy Sutton could be plan B for the Sens.
- Boston Herald: Trading Tim Thomas this off-season became a little tougher as he had surgery on a torn hip labrum, and it will be 3-4 months recovery. Andrew Ference had hernia surgery that will require 2 month recovery. Vladimir Sobotka will have shoulder surgery on Tuesday.
- Chris McCosky of the Detroit News: Tomas Holmstrom took a hometown discount on his last Detroit Red Wings contract, but that may not be the case this time around. The 37-year old is looking for a multi-year deal. From his agents, “On the last contract, Tomas took a hometown discount so the organization would have enough cap room to keep everybody here (in Detroit). But at the end of the day, Tomas is going to have to feel he’s being treated fairly in the realm of what is taking place in the locker room.”
- Ron Cook of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette: Though the Penguins have said they aren’t interested in trading Evgeni Malkin, Cook thinks they’d be crazy not to listen to offers, and I agree with him. Why not listen to what teams will throw your way? Though they wouldn’t get the best player in any deal, they should be able to get a lot of nice pieces that might improve their team on a whole. A star winger, a top 2-4 defenseman, a prospect, maybe a pick or 2? Malkin and Crosby make a combined $17.4 million, toss in Jordan Staal, and that’s about $21.4 million in your top 3 centermen.

- Dave Stubbs of the Montreal Gazette: The Montreal Canadiens seem unsure on how to handle the trade/no-trade/re-sign situation with goalies Jaroslav Halak and Carey Price. Halak had started 6 of 7 games, after not really playing for close to a month. Halak trade rumors have quieted down the last couple weeks. Both goalies have shown they have the ability to be a #1 in the NHL, but then both have shown they could be #2′s in the league.
- Kevin Paul Dupont of the Boston Globe: With the newly signed Miro Satan, and Milan Lucic getting close to returning, Vladimir Sobotka and the struggling Blake Wheeler could find themselves out of the Bruins lineup.
- Kevin McGran of the Toronto Star: The Maple Leafs have 9 UFA and 4 RFA this year, and Burke will be paying close attention to all. Some will probably be re-signed, and others might be trade bait at the deadline. Matt Stajan and Vesa Toskala will be at the top of the list.
- Kevin McGran of the Toronto Star: The Maple Leafs will be without centers Mikhail Grabovski for 6 weeks with a broken wrist, and Wayne Primeau for 2-to-4 weeks with a knee injury. Center John Mitchell is now healthy and ready to go. Richard Wallin will mostly be back in the lineup after being a healthy scratch.
- Eric Stephens of the OC Register: Teemu Selanne (out for over a month) and Ryan Getzlaf (out a week) should both return later this week. That is good news for Ducks fans and Corey Perry, who has only 1 goal and 5 points in the last 13 games. The Ducks have also called up center MacGregor Sharp.
- Tom Reed of the Columbus Dispatch: Columbus has been going with a ‘win and you’re in’ policy with goalie Steve Mason and Mathieu Garon since mid December. Mason has played well of late so this policy will be void, at least temporarily.
