Morning Hits: Hawks-Pens at Soldier Field, Ribeiro not thinking contract, Jets, Avalanche and Bergeron talks

  • Hockey Central: The Blackhawks will host the Penguins at Soldier Field on March 1st.
  • Stephen Whyno of the Washington Times: Capitals UFA Mike Ribeiro said he’s not worried about his next contract. He could earn his next contact with a good playoffs. He’s looking for a long-term deal and has already rejected a Capitals offer of three-years, $14 million.

    “I think playoff or not playoff, I’m probably going to have a good deal so I’m really worried about my deal right now,” Ribeiro said. “It’s going to signed at some point. So the focus since the beginning was to get to the playoffs and now that we’re here it’s about how far can we go as a team. But I’m not worried; I’m going to sign and it’s just going to happen when the time is right.”

  • Ed Tait of the Winnipeg Free Press: Jets coach Claude Noel has one year left on his contract and GM Kevin Cheveldayoff had this to say:

    “Claude Noel is the head coach of the Winnipeg Jets. He’s under contract. I know you’re going to ask me about an extension. There’s processes that have to go through, there’s different things you discuss, you talk about, you meet as a group, as a staff.”

    The Jets have nine RFAs who are  “very much priorities” according to Cheveldayoff. No formal contract discussions have taken place with RFAs: Zach Bogosian, Bryan Little, Blake Wheeler, Alex Burmistrov, Eric Tangradi, Anthony Peluso, Zach Redmond, Paul Postma and Arturs Kulda.

  • Elliotte Friedman of CBC: If the Avalanche didn’t win the lottery and get the first overall pick, there were rumors that they would look to trade up. Avs GM Greg Sherman is still with the team, but it may come down to what role Joe Sakic wants to take. If Sakic decides to take over, VP of Player Development Craig Billington could have a bigger role. If Sakic declines for family or other reasons, does Sherman remain? The Avalanche asked for Derek Stepan when they were in talks with the Rangers about Ryan O’Reilly. Sounding like the Bruins and Patrice Bergeron have already talked contract extension. He has one year left on his deal and can’t sign a deal until after July 5th.

Injury Notes: Neal, Staal, Pominville, Backstrom, Emery, Bolland, Gaborik, Kane and Stuart

  • Katie Strang: Rangers defenseman Marc Staal didn’t rule himself out for Game 1, but it’s unlikely that he plays.
  • Mark Lazerus: Niklas Backstrom is day-to-day. Blackhawks Ray Emery and Dave Bolland are unlikely for Game 2.
  •  Aaron Portzline of the Columbus Dispatch: Blue Jackets Marian Gaborik will be recovering for three to four weeks after he has abdominal surgery, forcing him to miss the World Championships. Gaborik’s agent said it’s too repair an area where he had hernia surgery in 2001.
  • Ed Tait of the Winnipeg Free Press: Jets forward Evander Kane had been bothered by a sore wrist and foot. He’ll see a specialist for his wrist, then determine if surgery is required. Defenseman Mark Stuart had an abdominal injury for most of the season.

Morning Hits: Preds sign Hornqvist, Rask between Howard and Price, Oilers 1st pick in play, Jets storylines

  • PR Nashville Predators: The Predators have signed forward Patric Hornqvist to a five-year, $21.25 million contract extension.

    “As we build towards the 2013-14 season and beyond, re-signing Patric Hornqvist was an off-season priority,” Poile said. “Since joining the Predators, he has become—and will remain—an integral member of our core group. Patric is everything we talk about as a Predator—he is relentless in going to the net and willing to pay the price to score goals, has a terrific work ethic and is a quality person who is respected on and off the ice. Patric is just entering the prime of his career. He has led our team in goal-scoring in two of the last four seasons and we are looking forward to him being a significant part of the Predators’ on-ice success in the years to come.”

  • Joe Haggerty of CSNNE: RFA Tuukka Rask could be looking for a new deal somewhere between Jimmy Howard’s $5,291,667 salary cap hit and Carey Price’s $6.5 million cap hit. His playoff performance may shift the number closer to one them. Rask finished the season with a 19-10-5 record, a 2.00 goals-against average and a .929 save percentage.
  • Terry Jones of the Edmonton Journal: The Oilers have the seventh overall pick in the 2013 NHL draft, and it could be in play.

    “We’re definitely going to look at doing something with that pick. I think we’d be very receptive to moving back and picking up another pick potentially,” said MacTavish.

    “It’s a very deep draft in my mind. There are tons of players out there who excite me. Or possibly we could pick up somebody that could help us immediately and another pick.”

    MacTavish is also looking to get bigger.

    “We want more toughness, more meat and more depth in our lineup,” he said.

    “I’m pretty optimistic we can get some of the immediate growth and change,” said MacTavish.

    Some people had been mentioning amnesty buyout for Ryan Smyth.

    “Ryan Smyth will be back,” he said.

  • Ken Wiebe of the Winnipeg Sun: 5 Jets storylines to watch this offseason.1. Are the Jets ready for their first blockbuster deal? Wiebe doesn’t think they should trade Dustin Byfuglien, but he could bring the biggest return. If they were to move him, they would need to get an all-star back.2. Is Olli Jokinena candidate for an amnesty buyout? It may send a bad message to future free agents if they buyout Jokinen after just one season. Paying someone over $3 million to not play, isn’t the way the Jets do business. Jokinen could still bounce back.3. Will the Jets try to move up in the draft? The Jets could still find an impact player at 13. It’s possible that they could package their pick along with another pick or player and move up. They have six picks in the first three rounds.

    4. Who will be Ondrej Pavelec’s backup? They could bring back Al Montoya.

    5. Can Toby Enstrom kick the injury bug? He’s missed 46 games in the last two seasons. He hopes to be able to get rid of the “fragile” label.

Morning Hits: Briere, Smith, Bryzgalov, Elias, Iginla, Laviolette, Byfuglien, Whitney and the Hurricanes

  • Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun: If the Flyers buyout Daniel Briere, he could end up in Montreal.Coyotes Mike Smith is looking for $6 million a year and has refused to sign a deal with the Coyotes.

    Smith could be an option in Philadelphia if they buyout Ilya Bryzgalov. Flyers management is split on buying him out now or waiting to see how he does next year, and if it’s not good, then buy him out next spring.

    Garrioch has heard there is about a 50/50 chance that Patrick Elias returns to the Devils. The Flyers, Canadiens, Maple Leafs, Red Wings and Sharks will all be looking for help upfront.

    Jarome Iginla signing with the Stars could be a good bet.

  • Dave Isaac of the Courier Post: Flyers GM Paul Holmgren said you can expect Peter Laviolette back as the Flyers coach next season. They will keep the same system in place, and there won’t be an overhaul of players.
  • Dave Isaac of the Courier Post: Flyers GM Paul Holmgren has said that Ilya Bryzgalov’s eccentric personality isn’t a problem. Forward Daniel Briere understands the situation. If the Flyers buy him out, it would cost them $3.3 million over four years.
  • Derek Van Diest of the Edmonton Sun: Oilers UFA defenseman Ryan Whitney thinks it’s probably in his best interests to get a fresh start somewhere else next season.

    “I think I can still play, I’ve proven that I can,” Whitney said. “Obviously there were some games where I didn’t play well, but there were a stretch of games where I thought I did play well. It’s been a tough couple of years here, I’m just kind of looking forward to a fresh start.”

  • Chip Alexander of the Raleigh News & Observer: Hurricanes Tuomo Ruutu will have hip surgery. GM Jim Rutherford likes his core group, but there will be some new faces next year. They have to decide on their UFAs: Chad LaRose, Tim Brent, Joe Corvo, Bobby Sanguinetti, Marc-Andre Bergeron and Dan Ellis. Their blue line will be a priority for Rutherford.

Morning Hits: Nill, Nieuwendyk, Malone, Flames, Neuvirth, Ducks, Luongo, Jets and Sabres

  • Pierre LeBrun of ESPN: Sources saying that Red Wings assistant GM Jim Nill will replace GM Joe Nieuwendyk in Dallas. Andy Strickland: Confirms reports that Nill will replace Nieuwendyk.
  • Erik Erlendsson: Erlendsson doesn’t see the Lightning buying out Ryan Malone or Teddy Purcell. Trading Malone is a possibility.
  • The Fourth Period: It’s thought that the Flames were close to trading Cory Sarich at the deadline. Teams also called about Lee Stempniak, Curtis Glencross and Alex Tanguay. GM Jay Feaster has indicated that he isn’t really interested in trading Glencross. If Miikka Kiprusoff retires, the Flames will be on the lookout for a new No.1 goalie.
  • Mike Vogl: The Capitals signed Michal Neuvirth to a 2-year, $5 million extension. He’ll earn $2.4 million next year, and $2.6 million the following year.
  • Eric Stephens: Ducks coach Bruce Boudreau won’t name is starting goalie for Game 1, but added that he’s known who it will be for awhile.
  • Andi Petrilli: (Canucks lose 7-2, 6 goals in the third) Canucks Roberto Luongo was off the ice, undressed, showered and out of the arena in 12 minutes. Jason Botchford: “I’m not sure how furious Luongo is. He should be used to getting hung out there and embarrassed by now.”
  • Ken Wiebe of the Winnipeg Sun: The Jets have nine RFAs, including: Zach Bogosian, Blake Wheeler and Bryan Little. Wiebe thinks they should lock up Bogosian to a max-length eight year deal worth somewhere in the neighborhood of $48 to 50 million.

    “You never know. It’s a negotiation. It’s not something that usually happens overnight. “I don’t really know what I’m expecting as far as how smooth or how not smooth it’s going to go,” said Bogosian. “Yeah, I’ve really kind of settled in here and I’ve enjoyed my time. Whether it’s two years, eight years or 10 years, I’m going to enjoy playing here.

    “I’m looking forward to that next step. I want to be part of the solution moving forward, as far as getting in the playoffs and winning a championship.”

    Wheeler will be looking for a raise from his $2.55 million, and could get a long-term deal.

    Little should get a multi-year deal for more than the $3 million he was making.

    Alex Burmistrov is an interesting case, as some think he could bolt for the KHL or could use a fresh start with a new organization.

  • Mike Harrington of the Buffalo News: Sabres Thomas Vanek has thought that Friday’s game could have been his last in a Sabres uniform.

    “Let’s be honest,” Vanek said. “I’m not stupid. I know I have a year left and they can probably deal me for prospects, young guys, whatever else is out there. Yeah, I’ve thought about it. If it looks like it’s a long rebuild, then it probably makes sense for both parties to move on.”

    “I don’t know what the plan is,” Vanek said. “If they’re turning it over to the younger guys, it’s a turnover. Or are they going to build around us again? It’s all speculation at this point because you guys don’t know and I don’t know what’s going to happen.”

    Sabres Ryan Miller also realizes that his days could be number.

    “Around this stage of a contract, you have to be realistic,” Miller said. “In the last year of your deal, if you’re not part of the plan, you become an asset that’s tradable. So I’m just trying to stay open to coming back and trying to stay excited about playing hockey games in the NHL if it’s not going to work out.”

  • Joe Haggerty: Bruins Nathan Horton won’t travel with the team due to an upper-body injury he sustained in the fight with Jarome Iginla.
  • Ian Mendes: Unlikely that Senators Erik Karlsson is in the lineup tonight.
  • Will DePaoli: Penguins Kris Letang and Marc-Andre Fleury won’t be in the Penguins lineup tonight. Pittsburgh Penguins: Letang has foot poisoning. Beau Bennett has an upper-body injury. Fleury’s wife is expecting. Sidney Crosby, James Neal, Paul Martin and Evgeni Malkin all skated today.

  • Ian Mendes: Neither of Jason Spezza and Erik Karlsson skated yesterday. A scheduled day off for Karlsson and Spezza worked out off-ice.
  • Mark Masters: Capitals coach Adam Oates on Brooks Laich: “We want him to be pain free before he goes on the ice again so he’s working as hard as he can to become pain free.” At the moment, they are not considering surgery for Laich’s groin. There is no timetable for his return.
  • Ken Wiebe: Jets coach Claude Noel said that Nik Antropov (lower-body) skated for the first time since suffering his injury. He’s day-to-day and could return this week.
  • Aaron Portzline: Blue Jackets center Artem Anisimov (concussion) is traveling with the team. He won’t play on Wednesday or Thursday, but hasn’t been ruled out for any games beyond that.
  • B.D. Gallof: Islanders Casey Cizikas left last night’s game with an upper-body injury.
  • Flyers.NHL.com: Flyers Bruno Gervais had surgery last Thursday to repair a torn stomach muscle.

  • Jim Diamond: Predators Patrick Hornqvist is out for the next couple games with an upper-body injury.
  • Lou Korac: Blue TJ Oshie is getting close to returning to the lineup, could happen later this week during their home-stand.
  • Shawn Mitchell: Blue Jackets Artem Anisimov (head) traveled with the team to Denver, but is out indefinitely.
  • Terry Koshan: Maple Leafs Joffrey Lupul has been cleared for contract. He is close to returning to the lineup, but realizes that there is no rush.
  • Erik Erlendsson: Lightning’s Tom Pyatt left last night’s game with an upper-body injury.
  • Ken Wiebe: Jets coach Claude Noel said that defenseman Tobias Enstrom is week-to-week and not day-to-day with a mid-body injury (back).
  • Lou Korac of NHL.com: Dave Bolland returned to the Blackhawks lineup yesterday, but Patrick Sharp missed the game with an upper-body injury. It’s believed to be the shoulder injury that kept him out of 14 games, before returning last week.
  • Adrian Dater of the Denver Post: Avalanche prospect Joey Hishon suffered another head injury on Friday after being hit from behind into the boards. He missed almost two years with a concussion. They haven’t called it a concussion just yet. Semyon Varlamov returned to the Avalanche lineup yesterday after missing time due to a hip injury. Milan Hejduk could return to the lineup tonight. Talk of Hejduk retiring at the end of the season may be premature.

    “I’m not really sure right now. We’ll sit down and make some decisions after the season,” said Hejduk.

Morning Hits: Garrioch roundup, top UFAs, Soderberg and Clarkson

  • Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun: Garrioch lists some buyout candidates: 1. Ilya Bryzgalov (PHI) – $23 million spread out over 14 years. 2. Roberto Luongo (VAN) – $27 million and on the Canucks payroll until 2031. 3. Brad Richards (NYR) – $27 million and on the payroll until 2027.The NHL had meetings to discuss making the nets bigger in an attempt to increase scoring. No one really believes that it will happen.

    Terry Murray could replace Peter Laviolette if the Flyers decide to fire him.

    There could be house-cleaning this summer in Colorado. President Pierre Lacroix, GM Greg Sherman and coach Joe Sacco could all be fired. Joe Sakic could take over, which could lead to a Patrick Roy return.

    It doesn’t look like Jets UFA defenseman Ron Hainsey will be back. The Flyers will be among the teams interested.

    The Flyers will make another run at defenseman Keith Yandle.

    The Red Wings had calls on Valtteri Filppula at the deadline but decided to keep him. Teams that called were the Penguins, Bruins, Maple Leafs and Rangers.

    Two GM’s on the hotseat could be Sabres Darcy Regier and Stars Joe Nieuwendyk. Canadiens assist GM Rick Dudley could be fit in Buffalo. Brian Burke’s name has been mentioned as a possible Stars replacement. Burke has also been linked to the Rangers if Glen Sather steps aside.

  •  Mike Zeisberger of the Toronto Sun: Zeisberger lists his top 10 UFAs, but not in order: 1. Jarome Iginla 2. Nathan Horton 3. Stephen Weiss 4. Ryane Clowe 5. Patrik Elias 6. Niklas Backstrom 7. Sergei Gonchar 8. Derek Roy 9. Mike Ribeiro 10. Tyler Bozak
  • Eliotte Friedman: The Swedish Ice Hockey Federation was arguing that Carl Soderberg was under contract until May 15th. The NHL ruled that, that wasn’t the case as his Swedish team gave him his release. Dominic Tiano: Soderberg is leaving Sweden on Monday. James Murphy of ESPN Boston: He’ll join the team on Wednesday.

    “We are fortunate to get a player like Carl at this stage of the season,” Bruins general manager Peter Chiarelli said in a release. “I would like to thank the President of the Linkoping hockey club, Mike Helber and their GM, Johan Hemlin, in playing a significant part in allowing Carl to play for the Boston Bruins. Carl is a big, strong, two-way center who can also play wing. We look forward to him joining our team this week.”

  • Don Brennan of the Ottawa Sun: Brennan thinks that if the Senators could fit UFA wings David Clarkson into their budget this summer, they should do it. There would be lots of competition for him.

  • Rich Chere: Devils Ilya Kovalchuk on playing Friday: ”I don’t know. I’m going to decide with the doctors and coaches, but I don’t think so.”
  • Katie Strang: Rangers Marc Staal said that his peripheral vision is fine, but his eyesight is still a little blurry. He said he still needs to work on depth perception, reading plays, etc.
  • Bruce Garrioch: Senators Erik Karlsson didn’t skate yesterday and likely won’t for the rest of the week.
  • Joe Haggerty of CSNNE: Bruins Patrice Bergeron, out with a “moderate concussion” has started working out again.

    “I’ve met with Patrice. He’s been working out,” said Chiarelli. “He’s on his road to recovery, so it looks good.”

  • Paul Friesen: Jets defenseman Tobias Enstrom is questionable for tonight due to back problems.
  • Joanne Ireland: Oilers Ales Hemsky had an MRI yesterday on his foot. Everything was good and he returned to the lineup.
  • Sam Carchidi: Flyers defenseman Nicklas Grossman is out for the rest of the regular season.
  • Tim Panaccio: Flyers GM Paul Holmgren said that Daniel Briere is the only injured Flyer who “could’ play on Thursday.
  • Ian Mendes: If Senators Milan Michalek feels okay today, he could be in the lineup against the Flyers.
  • Joe Haggerty: Bruins Brad Marchand left last night’s game after taking an elbow to the head from Devils Anton Volchenkov.
  • Dan Murphy: Cory Schneider was a late scratch last night after coming down with the flu.

Garrioch’s roundup … Hejduk could retire … No calls for Komisarek … Flyers fans shouldn’t expect Weber

  • Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun: Four GMs that could be on the hotseat: Greg Sherman (COL), George McPhee (WAS), Jay Feaster (CAL) and Dale Tallon (FLA).Marian Gaborikturned down a $79 million from the Wild in 2009, thinking that he could get $100 million. He ended up signing a 5 year, $35 million deal the with Rangers. The Blue Jackets were the only team interested in his $7.5 million contract for next season.

    Sources say the Blue Jackets offered one of their three first round picks to the Stars for Jaromir Jagr. The Red Wings were also interested in Jagr at the deadline.

    A decision on the Phoenix Coyotes is imminent. ”In Canada, the fans have been very forgiving,” said a league executive. “There are 20 owners in the United States who are sick of writing cheques for $1 million to prop this thing up.” Garrioch thinks that moving them to Quebec City and keeping the Blue Jackets in the West makes the most sense until they have expansion.

    The Sharks thought about trading defenseman Dan Boyle but they went on a 5 game winning streak. The Flyers, Rangers and Red Wings were interested. They could look to move him in the summer.

    Ryane Clowe gave up on his sign-and-trade thoughts when he found out that nobody would give him an 8 year deal in the $5.5 to $6 million range.

    The Devils and Sabres had interest in Jets Alex Burmistrov.

    It wouldn’t surprise some people if the Wild bought out Dany Heatley and his $7.5 million salary in the summer.

    Expect the Flyers to be looking for a new coach at the end of their season.

  • Adrian Dater: Avalanche winger Milan Hejduk remains out with a shoulder injury and he could retire after the season. “Hejduk, 37, has hinted this season will be it for him. He could change his mind, and here’s hoping he might. But I doubt it. Age is the great equalizer, and Hejduk has suffered his share of injuries in recent years. Along with the shoulder, he has had serious knee injuries and a troublesome back.”
  • Steve Simmons of the Toronto Sun: Maple Leafs GM Dave Nonis called both James Reimer and Ben Scrivens five minutes after the trade deadline to let them know that neither was offered in a trade. The Canucks did ask for Scrivens in their offer, but the Leafs wouldn’t do unless they included a “significant portion” of Roberto Luongo’s salary. The Flames had agreed to take a 2nd round pick from the Maple Leafs for Miikka Kiprusoff. The Leafs didn’t get one call on Mike Komisarek.
  • Dave Isaac of the Courier Post: Isaac notes that Flyers fans shouldn’t expect to see Shea Weber in a Flyers uniform anytime soon. After all of Weber’s signing bonuses, the Predators will pay him $27 million before next season and $41 million before the 2014-15 season starts, 37% of his contract. Weber also has a no-trade clause.

    “That’s a financial unlikelihood for Nashville looking to move him, especially to Philadelphia,” said Stu Grimson, a former NHL tough guy who now is a radio commentator for the Preds.

    The Flyers will have to look elsewhere. Coyotes Keith Yandle? Could they outbid the Islanders for Mark Streit if he doesn’t sign before free agency starts? Do they look at Senators Sergei Gonchar or Ron Hainsey?

NHL Rumors I: The Fallout from yesterday

  • Elliotte Friedman: Flames GM Jay Feaster said that their only untouchables were Sven Baertschi, TJ Brodie, Curtis Glencross and Mark Giordano.
  • Randy Miller: Don’t understand the Flyers trading for Steve Mason, giving up a 3rd round pick. He’s struggled for years and is an RFA, so they would have to send him a qualifying of $3.2 million to retain his rights.
  • Jim Diamond: Predators GM David Poile on the Martin Erat trade: ”Marty came to us in recent days and indicated a trade might be in his best interests.”
  • Mike Harrington: Bets that the Wild initially asked the Sabres about Thomas Vanek before moving to Jason Pominville.
  • Gary Lawless of the Winnipeg Free Press: Jets GM Kevin Cheveldayoff wasn’t interested in trading picks for short-term help.

    “The hardest thing for me is to try and accelerate a process that can’t be accelerated,” said Cheveldayoff. “It’s a vicious circle. If you don’t draft players and develop them into assets, then you can’t do anything on a deadline day. If you choose to trade your draft picks for assets for the now, you forgo the opportunity to build a sustainable system with a sustainable flow of players.”

    They listened for offers on Alex Burmistrov, but didn’t come up with anything they liked.

  • Pierre LeBrun of ESPN: The Oilers offered Ryan Jones and a draft pick to the Senators for Ben Bishop. The Senators asked for Sean Couturier straight up. Tampa Bay hopes to find a 1a between Bishop and Anders Lindback. Both the Canucks and Canadiens were interested in Raffi Torres. The Coyotes settled with the Sharks offer of Florida’s 3rd round pick. The Rangers gained payroll flexibility for next season by trading Marian Gaborik. They have to re-sign RFAs Derek Stepan, Ryan McDonagh and Carl Hagelin. Also, they now have a better shot at signing Ryane Clowe.
  • Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun: The Capitals received lots of interest in Mike Ribeiro, but they continue to work on an extension with him. The Canadiens were after a rugged winger but were unsuccessful. The Blue Jackets tried to get Tomas Fleischmann from the Panthers. The Blue Jackets may have offered one of their 1st round pick and Derek Dorsett for Fleischmann. The Devils, Canucks, Jets and Jackets showed interest in Drew Stafford. The Sabres considered Alex Burmistrov.
