Injury Notes: Smith, Michalek, Hossa, Stastny, Wilson, Salvador and Gionta
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL Injuries, NHL News on March 26th, 2013
- Jerry Brown NHL.com: Coyotes goaltender Mike Smith hasn’t been on the ice since being hit by Alex Edler last Thursday. Defenseman Zbynek Michalek is getting closer to returning. He’s been out since March 9th.
- Chris Kuc of the Chicago Tribune: Blackhawks Marian Hossastill isn’t able to get back into the lineup. He’s “probably doubtful” for Tuesday according to coach Joel Quenneville. He’s recovering from an upper-body injury.
“Hopefully by the weekend (Hossa) will be playing,” Quenneville said. “Hossa hasn’t been on the ice the last couple of days but he’s progressing.”
- Adrian Dater of the Denver Post: The Avalanche have lost Paul Stastny to an injured left foot after blocking a shot. Ryan Wilson re-injured his ankle again and could be done for the year. Dater via Sulia: Stastny’s out about 10 days and Wilson is out indefinitely.
- Tom Gulitti: The Devils lost Bryce Salvador (lower-body) and Stephen Gionta (upper-body) to injuries last night.
Wings get big fine … Leafs have assets to get Luongo deal done … Coyotes player update … Some overseas notes
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL News, NHL Rumors on September 22nd, 2012
- TSN: The Red Wings organization has been fined in the neighborhood of $250,000 for comments made by senior VP Jim Devellano in an interview with Island Sports News.
“It’s very complicated and way too much for the average Joe to understand, but having said that, I will tell you this,” said Devellano. “The owners can basically be viewed as the Ranch, and the players, and me included, are the cattle. The owners own the Ranch and allow the players to eat there. That’s the way its always been and that the way it will be forever. And the owners simply aren’t going to let a union push them around. It’s not going to happen.”
“Yes, they are billionaires,” Devellano said. “Good on them, they deserve it, but they also make their employees millionaires. Not a bad tradeoff for a guy like (Milan) Lucic getting what, $6 million a year? I mean good on him too, but he should be grateful. Understand, though, that these players want for nothing … it’s first class this, first class that, meal allowances, travel money on the road, the whole shebang.”
- Jason Botchford of the Vancouver Province: Roberto Luongo may have come to the realization that getting to traded back to Florida is “hanging on by a thread, if at all.” The Maple Leafs have already made a solid offer for Luongo, and when Canucks GM Mike Gillis was asked about the deal, he said “there were several assets the Buds have which can get it done.” Before the CBA expired, there were reports that a mystery team or 2 may have entered the Luongo sweepstakes. The Oilers were mentioned as one team that could be interested. Nikolai Khabibulin may retire if the season is wiped out. Devan Dubnyk has improved, but is not a sure thing as a #1.
- Sarah McLellan of the Arizona Republic: Coyotes Oliver Ekman-Larsson is expected to head to their AHL training camp this Friday. Keith Yandle is skating in Boston, and plans to stay there for the time being. Yandle on playing overseas, “I’m not sure,” he said. “I haven’t really even thought about that too much, to be honest. Right now I’m preparing as if the season will start.” What other Coyotes are thinking. David Moss will be staying Phoenix for the time being. Antoine Vermette will stay for a bit, but may join the traveling league in Quebec that some NHLers are trying to put together. David Schlemko isn’t sure about Europe and will wait until mid-late October to decide on anything. Raffi Torres is undecided. Derek Morris is unsure. Zbynek Michalek is considering Europe. Martin Hanzal has a couple options with Czech and other European teams. Mike Smith and his pregnant wife don’t have a problem with going to Europe. Boyd Gordon would consider playing in Europe. Paul Bissonnette will stay. Steve Sullivan doesn’t want to leave his family. Shane Doan isn’t sold on leaving.
- The Fourth Period: Steven Stamkos’ agent, Mark Guy, confirmed that Stamkos “has been contacted by many teams,” but is not close to making a decision. HC Lugano of the Swiss National League A League is one of the teams that is reportedly interested in Stamkos.
- George Richards of the Miami Herald: Panthers Dmitry Kulikov may be close to signing with Lokomotiv Yaroslavl.
- Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun: There have been no goalies to head overseas, and it may be hard for them to find work. Henrik Lundqvist should be joining Frolunda. Senators Craig Anderson will have to be patient.
“It’s not just a matter of finding a job … it’s a matter of finding a job and making sure that the player is protected now and in the future,” Anderson’s agent, Justin Duberman, said from his Chicago office Saturday.
“There is a lot of risk in going over. There’s a lot of great things about going over as well from a hockey standpoint, but you have to make sure you protect yourself from an insurance standpoint to make sure it’s a great opportunity.”
- Adrian Dater via Sulia: Players may not be in a rush to make a deal as their escrow checks are coming, 8% of their base salary from last year. Average checks will be about $163,000.
- Slava Malamud via twitter: “There is no way, kids, that Crosby is coming to the KHL. Not with teams like Vityaz roaming around, specializing on injuring opposing stars.”… “The KHL can and will protect Russian NHLers against goons, but Crosby? If anything, Sid-hunting will be encouraged. No reason for him to go.” … “Guys like Shea Weber (big, scary D-man) and Patrick Kane (you know, vodka) would be welcome and do well in KHL. But finesse stars, stay away.”
Trade rumors on: Visnovsky, Luongo to Florida and Chicago, “leafs not done yet”, Sens liked Michalek, Pens and Martin
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL Free Agents, NHL Rumors on June 25th, 2012
- Arthur Staple via twitter: Lubomir Visnovsky said that Slovak website interview was before the trade to the NY Islanders. Was asked if he would stay in Slovakia or sign with the KHL is there was a lockout. Staple talked with Visnovsky who said he’s to go to camp and play. “This is my first choice, to play for the Islanders.”
- The Fourth Period: A source is saying the Panthers are serious about bringing in Roberto Luongo. The source also indicated the Luongo is now only willing to waive his no-movement clause to go to Florida. The Canucks are believed to be asking for 2010 1st round pick Nick Bjugstad, but the Panthers are no interested in doing that.
- Aaron Portzline via twitter: Heard over the weekend at the draft that if the Blackhawks could make the money work, Roberto Luongo to Chicago.
- Paul Hendrick via twitter: After the Luke Schenn-James van Riemsdyk trade, Hendrick tweeted “leafs not done yet.”
- The Fourth Period: The Senators attempted to trade for Zbynek Michalek before he was dealt to the Coyotes. The Sens are looking to add a veteran defenseman.
“(Penguins GM Ray Shero) told me what the contract was and what he was going to do, and I said, ‘That’s great, but unless you take an equal contract back, I can’t do it,’ ” Murray told the Sun. “So I was never really in it.”
- Elliotte Friedman via twitter: Penguins defenseman Paul Martin has limited protection. The Penguins know where they can and where they can’t send him.
- Sam Carchidi via twitter: Carchidi thinks it might take Jakub Voracek and draft picks to land Bobby Ryan.

Suter-Weber notes … Wings waiting for Lidstrom and Stuart … Blues priorities … Flyers notes … Sens and Karlsson … Michalek surgery
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL Free Agents, NHL Injuries, NHL News, NHL Rumors on May 11th, 2012
- Josh Cooper via twitter: Predators GM David Poile said about Ryan Suter: “Based on yesterday, I really feel he wants to play in Nashville.” Darren Dreger via twitter: “Why wouldn’t Suter go to July 1? He’s earned right to consider his options. If deal with Preds isn’t best, Nashville will trade his rights.”
- John Glennon of the Tennessean: Shea Weber options: Sign a multi-year deal, sign an offer sheet after July 1st with the Preds having the right to match or take the draft picks, or go to salary arbitration for a 1 or 2 year deal.
“Right now, I really don’t think we’re thinking about that side of things,” Weber said. “It was tough (to lose to the Coyotes). … It’s not easy to be going home right now.”
When asked if the Preds multiple trade acquisitions at the deadline will play any role in his decision:
“Yeah, who knows? When the time (comes) to think about that, I’ll think about it. But obviously the team was committed and that’s what you want. Every year you want to fill in holes you have and I think we did a great effort in trying to make things better. It just didn’t work out.”
- Pierre LeBrun of ESPN: Red Wings GM Ken Holland said he doesn’t really need to know Nicklas Lidstrom’s decision until mid-June. Despite the talk that defenseman Brad Stuart could be looking to sign with a West Coast team to be closer to his family, the Wings are leaving the door open. Holland said he’d speak with Stuart’s agent before the draft.
- Roger Hensley of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch: On what will be done to try and get the Blues to the next level. Jeremy Rutherfored – The Blues will get a budget soon and will likely be higher than in the past. They should look for a #2 defenseman to play beside Alex Pietrangelo. A scorer is one area that they could improve on, but Armstrong has said he believes in a scoring by committee approach. There is going to be some turnover with 7 UFAs (Arnott, Langenbrunner, Nichol, Porter, Colaiacovo, Jackman and Huskins). T.J. Oshie, David Perron and Chris Stewart will be RFAs. Jeff Gordon thinks bringing in Vladimir Tarasenko is the top priority of the Blues. Tarasenko and Jaden Schwartz will bring in some needed skill. Tom Timmermann thinks they need to bring in an “experience high-quality goalscorer.” Dan O’Neill and Andy Strickland think stabilizing the teams financials is the top priority. Strickland then adds signing their own free agents, and it’s possible that one of the young core players is traded this summer to improve their roster.
- Dustin Leed via twitter: Leed was told that numerous Flyers will be getting MRI’s and decisions on whether surgery will be needed or not will be determined after.
- Tim Panaccio of CSN Philly: Flyers GM Paul Holmgren isn’t sure if he needs address defense for next season as he expects Chris Pronger to return from his concussion, but he’s aware Pronger still has issues.
“He’s doing probably the same and any chance of returning, I would say your guess is as good as mine,” Holmgren said of Pronger. “ … at some point, I’ll sit down with Chris and see where he’s at. Probably prior to July 1st, we’ll make an assessment on where he’s at.”
The Flyers will be 1 of several teams that will be interested in Ryan Suter. If the Predators feel they can’t re-sign Suter, they’ll look to deal his rights before or at the draft. Holmgren on free agent Matt Carle:
“I’ve said that before, if Matt wants to be here, we’d like to have him back,” Holmgren said. “I don’t see any reason why we can’t work out a deal. We’re in a position now where we can’t sign him because of tagging space, but this is something that could be done quickly, I think.”
- Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun: As of early this week, there have been no formal talks between the Senators and Erik Karlsson. It may be in the best interest of the Sens to get something done as soon as possible so they can focus on other possible summer moves. Some league executives think don’t think anything will get done quickly unless they get to $7 million per season immediately.“People in Ottawa should be prepared for this to take until training camp,” said one league executive requesting anonymity. “It could happen if both sides decide to dig in their heels on this one.”
- Josh Yohe of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review: Penguins defenseman Zbynek Michalek had hip surgery and it’s believed he’ll be ready for the start of next year.
Ovechkin suspended 3 games for his hit on Michalek
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL News, NHL Suspensions on January 23rd, 2012
Washington Capitals winger Alexander Ovechkin was suspended for 3 games for his hit on Pittsburgh Penguins defenseman Zbynek Michalek.
Ovechkin leaves his feet and makes contact with Michalek’s head. He was suspended over a ‘charging’ violation.
Rumors involving the Oilers … List of forwards that could be available … Ovie, Michalek have hearings … Rangers need Dman … Benn to IR
Posted by Mark Easson in Fantasy Hockey News, NHL Injuries, NHL News, NHL Rumors on January 23rd, 2012
- Jim Matheson of the Edmonton Journal: The Oilers are taking calls for Ales Hemsky as half the league is looking for a top 6 forward. The Oilers need a puck moving defenseman more than a draft pick. It’s unlikely the Predators would give up Ryan Ellis for Hemsky. One scout thinks the Predators would rather have Ryan Smyth over Hemsky, but Smyth likely won’t waive his no-trade clause at the deadline. The Senators are a wild card for Hemsky. The Oilers have liked Drew Stafford. Matheson wonders if the Kings would be interested in a Jonathan Bernier for Magnus Paajarvi deal this summer. The Blackhawks might take a look at Chris Campoli for their 4-5 hole that they are looking to fill. The Predators may look at taking offers for backup Anders Lindback this summer.
- Dave Molinari of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette: Molinari lists some ‘rental’ players that could be available this year: Jason Blake (Ana), Josh Green (Edm), Nicklas Hagman (Ana), Adam Hall (TB), Ales Hemsky (Edm), Kristian Huselius (CBJ), Saku Koivu (Ana), Dominic Moore (TB), Frans Nielsen (NYI), Samuel Pahlsson (Ana), Jay Pandolfo (NYI), P.A. Parenteau (NYI), George Parros (Ana), Vinny Prospal (CBJ), Tuomo Ruutu (Car), Teemu Selanne (Ana) and Ryan Smyth (Edm).
- Bob McKenzie via twitter: Capitals Alex Ovechkin will have a hearing today for his high hit on Michalek. Penguins Zbynek Michalek will have a hearing today for his elbow on Hendricks.
- Larry Brooks of the NY Post: Rangers GM Glen Sather needs to add a defenseman that can handle big minutes down the stretch. They’ve always liked Hurricanes defenseman Tim Gleason. Stars Sheldon Souray is an interesting option given his ability on the power play, but there are questions about his ability to defend. Ryan Suter is a possibility if he becomes available and if they want to go that direction.
- Mike Heika of the Dallas Morning News: Heika wonders if the Stars may have to consider moving Stephane Robidas, Brenden Morrow or Nicklas Grossman to create roster room for younger players. Heika doesn’t think so, as it sends a message that they are giving up this year. If they fall out of the race though, they may do something.
- Dallas Stars via twitter: The Stars have placed Jamie Benn on the IR and recalled Matt Fraser.
- Adam Jahns of the Chicago Sun-Times: More will be known about Jonathan Toews injury after practice today. The Blackhawks have only 1 game before the All-Star break.
- Tim Campbell of the Winnipeg Free Press: Jets Dustin Byfuglien and Evander Kane didn’t accompany the team to Carolina for tonight’s game. They play the Rangers on Tuesday in NY. Byfuglien and Kane are not expected to play until after the All-Star break.
- Aaron Portzline via twitter: Blue Jackets forward R.J. Umberger could play tonight after missing the last 5 games with a concussion. Predators defenseman Ryan Suter is expected to be back after missing 3 games with an upper-body injury.
- Shawn Mitchell via twitter: Recently signed Brett Lebda will make his debut tonight, and will be on the top pairing with Fedor Tyutin.
- David Alter via twitter: Leafs lines at yesterday’s practice: Lupul-Bozak-Kessel, Crabb-Grabo-Kulie, Lombardi-Connolly-Kadri, MacArthur-Steckel-Brown, x Rosehill,Armstrong,Boyce.
Crosby update and rumors … Burke like January trades … Lightning, Ducks, Blackhawks rumors … Leafs injury updates … Starting goalies
Posted by Mark Easson in Fantasy Hockey News, NHL Injuries, NHL News, NHL Rumors, NHL Starting Goalies on January 6th, 2012
- Pierre LeBrun of ESPN: On Sidney Crosby rumors that his season or career could be over.
“Sidney is doing very well, he’s training, he’s going in the right direction,” agent Pat Brisson of CAA Sports told ESPN.com Friday. “The idea of retiring or shutting him down is not even in our vocabulary. Far from that.”
“Absolutely zero truth to these rumors,” added Penguins general manager Ray Shero to ESPN.com on Friday.
Maple Leafs GM Brian Burke tries to make a trade splash in January, well in advance of the trade deadline.
“We are listening to a lot right now and there is a good chance something will happen but I don’t think it’s going to happen today or tomorrow,” Burke said. “This is like hunting. Sometimes when you’re hunting, you get a feeling you’re going to stumble on something, or birds are coming in and you get a sixth sense something is about to happen. I don’t sense that here right now. We’re talking to a lot of teams about a number of things — mostly we’re listening because we like our group — but I can’t sense if something is imminent or not. Right now I’d say it’s not.”
Burke would like to add some size upfront, and they are not talking to anyone right now about adding a goaltender.
Lightning GM Steve Yzerman may have to wait until the offseason to get a young starting goalie and a top 4 defenseman.
“I think I look at both, short-term and big picture,” Yzerman said. “I’m not going to do something out of desperation that’s going to hurt us in the long run, by trading draft picks and a good prospect or something like that. Any deal has got to make sense for us long term. So that makes it tricky.”
Ducks GM Bob Murray:
“What I said is what I said, right now I’m listening to everything,” Murray told ESPN.com. “It would be very difficult to make the type of deals I want, but I’m listening for sure. I still think we have a decent core here, but we’re maybe going to have to change a piece or two.”
“But sometimes blockbusters happen at the trade deadline, you never know,” Murray said.
Blackhawks GM Stean Bowman has been looking for a deal for awhile. He’d like to acquire a 4-5 defenseman and a center that could play in the top 6.
“Ideally, I’d like to find a center man,” Bowman said. “It doesn’t have to be a top center man, but somebody that can play and complement top players.”
- Nick Kypreos of Sportsnet.ca: Kypreos thinks that Sidney Crosby’s season is over based on his long-term health and the potential of a new contract. Crosby has one more year on his deal and can begin negotiations on July 1st. Crosby’s career could be in jeopardy with another concussion, and the next contract won’t come with an insurance policy that covers the Penguins from a career ending concussion. If Crosby is a “Penguin for Life,” the Penguins would be on the hook for the full amount, which could be as much as 10 years, $100 million.
- David Pagnotta via twitter: According to someone close to the Penguins, Sidney Crosby is doing better and is training. His goal is to back this season, though the timeline is still unclear.
- Scott MacArthur via twitter: Maple Leafs coach Ron Wilson expects Dion Phaneuf to play tomorrow. No break after taking puck in the face. Colby Armstrong suffered a setback on his concussion recovery and needs a few days away from the rink. David Alter via twitter: Mike Komisarek and Mike Brown will return to the Maple Leafs lineup tomorrow.
- Josh Yohe via twitter: Penguins winger Pascal Dupuis will be playing tonight. Paul Martin is in. Arron Asham is out. Zbynek Michalek and Richard Park are ‘iffy.’
- Sam Carchidi via twitter: Kimmo Timonen is day to day. Flyers put Matt Walker on waivers.
- Dallas Stars via twitter: The Stars are looking to get Sheldon Souray back on Tuesday.
- Damian Cristodero vai twitter: Lightning forward Brett Connolly is returning to the team, and could play on Saturday.
- Dan Murphy via twitter: Cory Schneider will start in net for the Canucks against the Bruins.
- Jeremy Rutherford via twitter: Brian Elliott will start in net on Saturday against the Avalanche.
- Mark Stepneski via twitter: Kari Lehtonen will start in net tomorrow for the Stars.
- Chris Botta talks with Darren Dreger about the current trade market.
