- Erik Erlendsson of the Tampa Tribune: Lightning forward Martin St. Louis will wear a visor when he returns. Last Thursday he struck by a Dominic Moore backhand during the pregame skate.
“I was scared, I was scared, like I felt — and I don’t know if it was anxiety or everything, I just felt very, very sick before I got to the hospital,” he said. “You have a lot going through your mind.”
“That night, at that point I knew that I had vision in the eye,” he said. “I didn’t know what kind of vision I had, but I could see light and movement, so I knew that it wasn’t as bad as I thought it was.”
St. Louis can’t do any physical activity until the blood subsides from his eye. There is no timetable. Coach Guy Boucher said on Monday that he doesn’t expect him back until after Christmas.

Some audio on Belak and fighting in hockey … Grabovski may have played with mild concussion … Flames looking for a #1 center
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL Audio, NHL News, NHL Rumors on September 3rd, 2011
- Team 990 Audio: PJ Stock talking about Wade Belak “there’s a lot more that’s gonna come out of the story.” May be more accidental than suicide. Stock also talks about fighting in hockey. (It’s well worth a listen). George Laraque in the Globe and Mail on “The new problem in the NHL.” CBC Sports: Belak’s mother confirms that he battled depression but thought he had control of it. (audio interview with his mom can be viewed at the CBC link, no embed option with the video.)
- Dmitry Chesnokov of Yahoo! Sports: Maple Leafs forward Mikhail Grabovski credits Zdeno Chara hits last year on improving his play, which also may have given him a mild concussion.
“Zdeno Chara, too. I don’t have very good memories of Chara from last year. I think he has made me faster, he made me pay more attention to hits, to be more maneuverable.”
“Well, I think I had a mild concussion, he said. “But I recovered pretty quickly. And now I am feeling absolutely fine.”
- Gerry Fraley of the Dallas Morning News: 2 people have said that Tom Gaglardi has submitted a bid to buy the Dallas Stars. September 14th a prepackaged bankruptcy plan is to be presented to the court.
- Katie Strang of Newsday: Islanders forward Frans Nielsen is heading into his contract year and if he hits the open market, plenty of GMs will be interested. Nielsen says that,
“I’d love to stay here for many more years,”
“I think it will be the most amazing thing to have been here since Day 1 of this rebuild, to go through all those tough times, and turn it around and win a Stanley Cup, hopefully very soon,” Nielsen said. “I think that would make it even more fun to win.”
- Thomas Reed via twitter: The Blue Jackets have held no negotiations with Jared Boll or Derek Dorsett who both will be RFAs after the 2012-13 season.
- Scott Cruickshank of the Calgary Herald: Calgary Flames president Ken King. When asked which number 1 center the team is currently targeting,
“I’m not going to sit here and say that we have a legitimate No. 1 centreman. We don’t. We have players who can slot in there. But we’re still obviously searching and we’re in the market for a No. 1 centre.”
King on what the plans are with the cap room created with the Regehr and Langkow trades,
“We still have about $3.6 million worth of cap space. We are looking to improve our hockey club every single day. Whether we do something before training camp or there’s an opportunity on the waiver wire or there’s an opportunity during the season or at the trade deadline, I can assure you that ownership has given us a budget . . . we’re permitted to be a cap(-max) team.”
- Michael Russo of the Star Tribune: Wild forward Guillaume Latendresse only made it in 11 games last year after arriving in training camp out shape, has worked his “butt off” this summer and improved his nutrition. “My nutrition was really a big key this summer. I like to eat. Everybody knows it. Sometimes it can be a battle for me, but I’ve been good with it and I feel really good on the ice.”"

Richards not suspended for hit on Connolly … Norris finalists announced … Roy in for Game 7 … Boucher to start Game 7… Kaberle responds to Chiarelli’s comments
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL Free Agents, NHL Injuries, NHL News, NHL Videos on April 25th, 2011
- Norris finalists are Zdeno Chara, Nicklas Lidstrom and Shea Weber.
- Nick Kypreos via twitter: Flyers center Mike Richards won’t be suspended for his hit from behind on Sabres Tim Connolly.
- Sam Carchidi via twitter: Tim Connolly will be out for Game 7, Derek Roy is in. Mike Harrington of the Buffalo News: “Tim’s not doing very good,” said Sabres coach Lindy Ruff. “That’s something the league definitely has to take a look at. It’s a lack of respect for another player on the ice. It’s from behind. It’s head first. That’s a tough play. We lost a good player.”
- Sam Carchidi via twitter: Carchidi thinks that if Brian Boucher needs to be replaced in Game 7 it should be by Sergei Bobrovsky. Mike Harrington of the Buffalo News: “Brian Boucher will start Game Seven,” Laviolette said.
- Katie Carrera via twitter: Capitals defenseman Dennis Wideman skated in full pad today for the first time since suffering his leg hematoma.
- Katie Carrera via twitter: According to coach Bruce Boudreau there is no timetable on when Mike Knuble or Dennis Wideman will be back in the lineup. Mike Green isn’t on the ice today but is ‘okay.’
- Joe McDonald of ESPN Boston: Bruins defenseman Tomas Kaberle responded to GM Peter Chiarelli’s “disappointment” comments,
“I always put a lot of pressure on myself,” Kaberle said, “and hopefully I can prove why I am here. I would like to help out in every little thing I can do on the ice. Obviously I’m one of the guys on the [power play] and it would be nice to get something going there.
“The first couple of games I could have been better. The last few games I felt a lot better and I’m feeling better confidence-wise, so I’ll take it from there.”
At the time of the trade, Chiarelli and Kaberle’s agent, Rick Curran, agreed to put off contract talks until the off-season. There has been no communication between the two sides since then. Curran didn’t think Chiarelli’s comments were a concern for future talks. Kaberle has been paired with stay-at-home defenseman Adam McQuaid lately.
- Tom Gulitti of the Bergon Record: Parise says he’s interested in staying in NJ, enjoys his teammates and has fun play there. He hasn’t talked to his agents about contract details.
- Mike Richards hit on Tim Connolly

- Joe Haggerty of CSNNE.com: Marc Savard will undergo a physical exertion test in the next few days. He’s been doing low-intensity workouts, and has been making slow, steady progress. If/when he passes the test, it would be at least 4-6 before he’d return to the Bruins lineup.

Ondrej Pavelec talks with AJC … Thornton-Sharks talking extension … Chara contract breakdown … Injury notes from last night
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL Injuries, NHL News, NHL Rumors on October 10th, 2010
- Chris Vivlamore of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution: (exclusive interview with Ondrej Pavelec) After Atlanta Thrashers goalie Pavelec awoke in the ambulance after collapsing 2:25 minutes into Friday game with no feeling in his legs and not remembering playing more than 2 minutes. “I would like to tell you [what happened],” Pavelec told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution in an exclusive interview Saturday. “The last thing I remember was the lights going on after the [national] anthem. I don’t remember anything until I woke up in the ambulance and saw the doctor looking at me.” He underwent full body MRI exams yesterday and will have more test today, with the hope of being released later in the day. I could do more highlights of the article but I recommend reading the article. The Thrashers have recalled Drew MacIntyre to backup Chris Mason while Ondrej Pavelec is out.
- Pierre LeBrun of ESPN: Joe Thornton should have a contract extension done with the San Jose Sharks in the next couple weeks. Brad Richards would become really the only star centerman available next summer, that’s saying he doesn’t get a deal done during the season (nothing will happen on that front until the team is sold). Boston Bruins defenseman Zdeno Chara’s contract breakdown; 2011-12: $8.5 million 2012-13: $6 million 2013-14: $8 million 2014-15: $7 million 2015-16: $7 million 2016-17: $5 million 2017-18: $4 million. Shea Weber is a year away from becoming a UFA, a RFA after this season, but the Nashville Predators have already started communicating with him their vision in hopes of locking him up long-term.
There are three clear scenarios here:
1. He signs an extension and life is good in Music City.
2. He only does a one-year deal to bridge himself to his UFA year and he can do this by going to salary arbitration next summer.
3. The Preds get nervous they can’t sign him to a long-term extension and put him on the trade block over the summer.
- Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun: Daniel Alfredsson will play out the remaining 3 years of his contract and hasn’t ruled out the possibility of moving to the front-office afterwards.
- Deb Kaufman Placey via twitter: John Tavares will be re-evaluated on Monday from a mild concussion he suffered in last night’s game.
- New Jersey Devils via twitter: Anton Volchenkov suffered a broken nose after taking a Nicklas Backstrom shot to the face. Tom Gulitti via twitter: Brian Rolston suffered a lower-body injury last night.
- Eric Stephens via twitter: Pekka Rinne is day-to-day with a lower-body injury.
- John Haggerty via twitter: Tim Thomas starting for the Bruins today. Mark Recchi is skating with Seguin. Caron is with Bergeron and Wheeler.
- John Shannon via twitter: IF a sale gets done for the Phoenix Coyotes, the arena deal will completed at the same time.
- Hockey Night in Canada Hotstove: Ron MacLean, Eric Francis, Pierre LeBrun & Mike Milbury
Chara signs extension … Coyotes ‘sale’ update … NJ can play with 20 or less … Bergeron contract breakdown plus more
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL News, NHL Rumors on October 9th, 2010
- James Murphy of ESPN: Deal is for 7 years and $45.5 million. The “Ilya Kovalchuk” rule is in effect for this deal as Chara will turn 41 three months before the deal expires. For the first 6 years will carry a cap hit of $6.917 million, $4 million in the last year.
- Update 10:19 am: Jimmy Murphy via twitter: One source telling Murphy (chasing down more to confirm) that Chara’s deal is 7 years at $6.5 million per season.
- Kevin Paul Dupont of the Boston Globe: The Boston Bruins and Zdeno Chara are finalizing a long term contract extension. The contract could be done in this morning/early afternoon. It could be in the 6-7 year range at slightly lower than his $7.5 cap hit. It could be in the $6.5-6.8 million range.
- Rebekah L. Sanders: The process to sell the Phoenix Coyotes has been “characterized by missed deadlines, failed negotiations and growing worries as the final cutoff for negotiations loom.” If the Coyotes are not sold by Christmas time to someone who is willing to keep the team in Phoenix, the team will then becomes available for relocation. The city of Glendale as worked for months on 2 deals to see them fall through. Chicago investor Matthew Hulsizer has recently stepped up as the 3rd person/group attempting to get something worked out. Keeping the team in Glendale “remains our sole objective today,” Daly said. “Nothing to this point in time would suggest to us that the objective is unachievable.” The Coyotes have lost as much as $30 million each year since moving from Winnipeg in 1996. A stumbling block on any deal, “Glendale and the NHL want a buyer to reimburse them for keeping the team afloat these excruciating months.“
- Mark Everson of the NY Post: The New Jersey Devils are right against the cap with 20 players (played with 20 last night). A league official said they “would be allowed to start play with just 19 players dressed, or 18, or even 17, if they had to.” Without trading or demoting someone, they don’t have the room to call up someone as an injury replacement.
- Pierre LeBrun via twitter: Patrice Bergeron’s contract breakdown: $1 million signing bonus each year. $4.9 million in 2011-12, $3.55 million in 2012-13, $3.55 million in 2013-14 season.
- Joanne Ireland of the Edmonton Journal: Sheldon Souray is grateful for the opportunity to be playing in Hershey, and added this, “I look at coming here as a positive thing for me to get in this environment, in a winning environment, in a structured and healthy environment, and just start a new kind of chapter in my life.”
- Rich Hammond of LA Kings Insider: Despite being on the 4th line, rookie Brayden Schenn will get some power play time. Coach Terry Murray “Schenn has been a big part of that power play throughout the training camp. He’s got good vision, he’s composed, he makes good plays. He’s going to start there with Kopitar on that group right now. We sure liked what we saw in the practice today.”
- Bob McKenzie via twitter: Yesterday the Carolina Hurricanes put Justin Pogge and Brett Carson on waivers.
- Eric Duhatschek of the Globe and Mail: Not a rumor or anything, but a good piece on the trend to cheap goaltending.
Chara next for Bruins … Laperriere doesn’t want to retire … Giroux X-rayed … Ivanans vs MacIntyre fight
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL News, NHL Rumors, NHL Videos on October 8th, 2010
- Kevin Paul Dupont of the Boston Globe: The Boston Bruins are also looking to lock up Zdeno Chara to a contract extension. The 33-year old Chara will be a UFA at the end of the season, and is reportedly looking for a deal that will take him to about his 40th birthday. Chara’s current deal has him at a $7.5 million cap hit, and could be looking for something similar. A 7 year, $50 million deal could get it done, that would average out to about $7.14 million per season.
- Stephen Harris of the Boston Herald: “My goal,” said Chara, “is not to shoot to be playing at 40, it is to shoot to play maybe until 45.” Chara talks about his time and Boston and how he’d like to stay.
- Frank Seravalli of the Philadelphia Daily News: Philadelphia Flyers Ian Laperriere, out with post-concussion syndrome, sent the following text message to the Daily News,”My quote is: I’m not retiring and I’m just trying to feel better”.
- Frank Seravalli via twitter: Flyers forward Claude Giroux had an x-ray after the game last night, results aren’t known yet. He was hit in the ankle with a shot.
- Eric Stephens and Curtis Zupke of the OC Register: Anaheim Ducks defenseman Toni Lydman is accompanying the team on their opening trip. He has only taken part in 2 practices so far.
- Ted Kulfan of the Detroit News: The Detroit Red Wings home opener is tonight, Justin Abdelkader (ribs) and Kris Draper (groin) are out, Todd Bertuzzi (back) may not be ready to go, Kirk Maltby could be called up.
- Raitis Ivanans vs Steve MacIntyre: Ivanans takes a good one on the beak.
Contract talks involving Chara, Gudbranson, and Burmistrov
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL Rumors on October 1st, 2010
- Joe Haggerty via twitter: Boston Bruins defenseman Zdeno Chara on their contract extension talks, “We’re not on the exact same track. But we’re talking and we’ll see how it goes. We have a few days left.” They are trying to get a deal done before the start of the season.
- Chraig Custance via twitter: Florida Panthers top 2010 draft pick (3rd overall) Erik Gudbranson is having an excellent camp and could make the team. Preliminary talks have taken place and are expected to heat up on Monday when the 2 sides will meet according to GM Dale Tallon. Atlanta Thrashers 1st round pick, Alexander Burmistrov is also on the verge of making the NHL after being drafted a couple months ago. The 2 sides are talking, and according to his agent Mark Gandler, “You can make a deal in five seconds if there are two willing parties.”
