Will offer sheets start to come? Rumors surrounding Kovalchuk

  • Fluto Shinzawa of the Boston Globe: With the lack of depth in the NHL Free Agent market, teams may send out an offer sheets to improve their club. Some possible restricted free agents are Bobby Ryan, Marc Staal, Steve Downie, Sam Gagne, and David Perron. The Boston Bruins are now able to negotiate contract extensions for Zdeno Chara and Patrice Bergeron, both are entering the last year of their contract. Chara is making $7.5 million and would probably be looking for something similar. The Bruins could offer him a front loaded deal to bring down the cap number. Bergeron has a cap number of $4.7 million, and probably would get a deal with a similar number.
  • Helene Elliot of the LA Times: The LA Kings could still use a productive winger, and an experienced top 4 defenseman, but with not much remaining in the free agent group, the Kings could turn to trades or possibly an offer sheet.
  • Mark Everson of the NY Post: Devils GM Lou Lamoriello continues to pursue Ilya Kovalchuk. Kovalchuk would probably reject any offer below $8 million, and Kings may not have wanted to go over that number. The Devils may not want to go over $8 million as well. The Isles could be offering $10 million for 10 years.
  • Tom Gulitti of NorthJersey.com: A report out of Russia said that the Flyers offered Kovalchuk a deal, his Russian agent denied the report that he said that.
  • Larry Brooks via Twitter: “Kings rule out Kovalchuk. In other news, Yanks refuse to sign A-Rod after he opts out. Oh. Wait.”
  • Dave Molinari of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette: The Penguins are thinking about shifting Jordan Staal or Evgeni Malkin over to the wing. The Pens would then need to add a 3rd line center. Potential candidates could be: Rob Niedermayer, Dominic Moore, Jeff Halpern, John Madden, and Ryan Johnson.

Garrioch Rumors Update .. The Cost of Shot-Blocking, Stay-at-Dman is in $4 Million Range … Summit Series Anniversary Matchup?

  • Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun:
    • With Antti Niemi taking over the starting job from Cristobal Huet, and with a raise he’ll be getting this off-season, the ‘Hawks may bury Huet and his $5.625 in minors or buy him out.
    • The price for shot-blocking stay-at-home bluelines, Zbynek Michalek (Pho.), and Anton Volchenkov (Ott) could be in the $4-4.5 million range. Michalek will most likely have out priced himself in Phoenix. Volchenkov and the Senators are hoping to work something out.
    • The Ducks asked Teemu Selanne if he wanted to go anywhere at the trade deadline, he wanted to say. The Kings called about him.
    • After July 1st, the Bruins can talk to Zdeno Chara about a contract extension. He’ll be a UFA in 2011, and currently carries a $7.5 cap hit.
    • Sheldon Souray’s no-movement clause expires on July 1st, and Oilers will work hard to move him. He’d prefer the west coast to be closer to his family. The New York Rangers will most likely make a pitch.
    • The Canadiens didn’t want to move Jaroslav Halak at the deadline but may look deal him before the NHL Draft.
    • Contract talks between the Penguins and Sergei Gonchar are not going well. He could hit the open market and get in the $6-7 million range, the Pens were hoping for a hometown discount.
    • Jaromir Jagr is still a possibility for the Oilers next year, and the Rangers would like to get him back …. “But some believe it’s a risky move. “I just don’t know about Jagr. I understand why (the Oilers) want to make the move, I’m just not sure they should do it. I’m not sure if there is any gas left in that tank,” said one league executive”
  • Pierre LeBrun of the ESPN: The Russians have talked to Hockey Canada about a 2012 Summit Series, commemorating the 40th anniversary of the ’72 event. LeBrun thinks the Canada and USA should do the same. Signs are pointing to the Canadiens resigning Tomas Plekanec, but they would probably have to move out some salary to make it happen.
  • Mike Zeisberger of the Toronto Sun: Brian Burke said in a radio interview the other day that he expects Tomas Kaberle to remain a Maple Leaf next season, and coach Ron Wilson hopes he’s back as well. If Burke gets a really good offer for Kaberle, he might end up pulling the trigger.
  • Chip Alexander of the Raleigh News & Observer: Manny Legace has played really well of late for the Carolina Hurricanes, but it still may not be good enough to earn a new contract from the ‘Canes. Carolina may go with the 23 year old Justin Peters as Cam Ward’s backup next year, instead of the 37 year old Legace. But Legace thinks some team will come calling for next year.

    Some Free Agent Rumors, as well as some Injury News

  • Pat Hickey of the Montreal Gazette: Though Dominic Moore has fit in well with the Montreal Canadiens, he’ll most likely not be back with them next year. Moore was acquired for a 2nd line pick before the trade deadline, and is on a 1 year, $1.1 million. There were reports last off-season that he turned down a 2 year deal worth over $4 million, but he said reports on what he was offered were untrue. You keep telling yourself that Dominic if it makes sleep better at night. The fact is you threw away a couple million dollars.
  • Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun: The Ottawa Senators are having a difficult time re-signing Anton Volchenkov so far. Volchenkov turned down a 5 year deal before the Olympic Break. The sides are still far apart, but will continue to try to work something out. The Sens may also try to re-sign newly acquired defenseman, Andy Sutton.
  • Chris Vivlamore of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution: The Atlanta Thrashers have lost Evander Kane for at least 3 weeks to a fractured left foot. They also lost Christopher Schubert for 3-5 weeks with a pulled muscle in his hip. Chris Chelios could be recalled by Thrashers.
  • Steve Conroy of the Boston Herald: Without Marc Savard for an extended period of time, the Bruins were also without defenseman Zdeno Chara last night against the Maple Leafs due to a ‘lower-body’ injury. Chara suffered the injury on Saturday. Claude Julien hopes to have the Big Z back in the lineup tomorrow.
  • Jim Matheson of the Edmonton Journal: Nikolai Khabibulin talked to reporters yesterday, but only about his injury (back surgery ended his season) and not his booze cruising incident in Arizona. He is in court on March 16th on the extreme DUI charge. His blood level was double the legal limit, and could face a minimum of 30 days in jail, though 20 of the 30 days could be suspended if “he undergoes testing or treatment”.
